REPORTS OF MEETINGS .
CRAFT : METROPOLITAN ,
PAPYRUS LODGE , No . 2562 . THE installation meeting was held on Wednesday evening , 2 nd inst ., at the Hotel Cecil . The only business before the Lodge was the installation of the new Worshipful Master . Bro . Charles B . R . Maltby S . W . was unanimously elected to the Master's chair at the previous regular meeting , and he * was now duly installed by Bro . S . Charles Phillips .
After the appointment of the Officers , and the delivery of the addresses , a handsome jewel of a Past Master was presented to Bro . S . Charles Phillips I . P . M ., the presentation being accompanied by some very flattering remarks on the part of the Worshipful Master , with reference to the performance by Bro . Phillips of his duties as W . M . during the past year . Bro . Phillips feelingly acknowledged the gift , which , he said , he should always prize as a memento of the Brethren ' s kind support of him in the well-ruling and governing of the Lodge in the year just expired .
The Brethren afterwards adjourned to the banquet . Under the direction of Bro . W . B . Martin Organist some pretty singing was given between the toasts which were proposed , the vocalists being Mr . H . Horscrof t and Mr . T . Powell .
Bro . Vincent P . Freeman Past Grand Deacon Provincial Grand Secretary Sussex , and Bro . Richard Clowes Past Grand Standard Bearer replied to the toast of the Pro G . M ., the Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers Present and Past , the former principally dealing with the work of the Earl of Lathom and Earl Amherst ; and the latter referring to the circumstance
that Bro . Freeman , who was one of the most distinguished Grand Officers of England , although speaking of the work of others , had said nothing about himself . He added that the Brethren had been afforded a great treat that evening in seeing the outgoing Master place his successor in the chair of King Solomon in a manner most creditable to him .
Bro . S . Charles Phillips I . P . M ., in proposing the next toast , that of the Worshipful Master , said that it had not been with feelings of regret that he had abdicted the chair , for the simple reason that he had handed over the reins of office to one who was well qualified to follow in the footsteps of the Masters who had gone before him . Bro . Maltby had taken an interest in the
Lodge from its foundation , and in fact was one of the Founders . If the members would only emulate that which the W . M . had done that night they would deserve well of the Papyrus Lodge . From the sample of work given that evening they could see that he had the confidence , the heart , and the enthusiasm to follow out the principles and the tenets of Freemasonry . He wished him success and prosperity for his year of office .
Bro . Maltby W . M ., in acknowledging the toast , said it was true he was one of the Founders of the Lodge , and he had taken a great interest in it , It was a great gratification to him to reach the chair , and as long as he occupied that position be should do his best for the Lodge , and for the Order generally .
The W . M . proposed the Immediate Past Master , remarking that Bro . Phillips had faithfully performed his duties , and that evening had given a sample of what he could do by going through the installation ceremony . Bro . Phillips , in replying , said he had tried hard as a Mason to discharge his duties in the Lodge , and to carry out the installation was a portion of the Master ' s work . He had never posed as an ornamental Mason , but had always endeavoured to be a true , honest , and faithful one . He was sure
that was the wish of every Mason present , and he hoped they would all aspire to the sphere of influence which they termed " the chair of K . S . " In conclusion he thanked the Brethren most heartily for their support during the year , and trusted they would extend it to his successor . The Lodge had had a small beginning , but great results had been achieved , and he trusted that greater would be achieved in the future . He concluded by thanking the Brethren for their gift to him of a Past Master ' s jewel .
Several Brethren responded to the toast of the Visitors , and the toasts of tho Past Masters and the Officers of the Lodge followed , says the " City Press . "
