not have been surprised , but in a small Lodge like that , and in a small town like Rainham , it not only surprised but delighted him , and he felt sure that at its now home tho Lodgo would soon become one of tho moat influential in tho Province of Essox . BRO . JESSE BANNING .

JUSSE BANNING , Jreeraason and musician , who died at Tranmore on Tuesday , tbo 15 th inst ., at tho ripo age of eighty-five year ? , waa , says the Liverpool Toaf , formerly a well known and much respected citizen of Liverpoo l . Throughout life Le had a kind and genial disposition , and

was tho author of many musical compositions which in their day were very popular . He was organist at St . Jade ' s Church , Liverpool , for ten or twelve years . It was , however , aa a Freemason that he was moafc distinguished , having been installed a Worshipful Master

of the Craft so far back as the year 1869 , at the Concord Lodgo , Preston . In June 1872 he joined the Union Lodge , at Carlisle , and in 1873 he became a member of tho Everton and "Walton Lodges . The ' same year he was invested as Provincial Grand Organist of Cumberland and

Westmoreland , and was received as a Knight of St . John into the Order of tho High Priesthood . His remains were interred at Aufield Cemetery on Saturday , a number of friends assembling at the graive to pay a last tribute of respect to an old and esteemed citizen .

AT the same hour , on the 7 th inst , as the funeral of the Rev . John Core was taking place at Peterborough , a service was held in the parish church , Padsfcow , a large con . gregation assembling . The members of the local Artillery Corps , of which he was chaplain , Court Excelsior , A . O . P .,

of which he was au honorary member , and many of the members of St . Petroe Lodge marched in procession to church , accompanied by the Padstow Artillery band , playing the Dead March in " Saul / ' At the close of tho service the organist played the "Dead march , " and a muffled peal was rung on the bells .

Tho rogular meeting of tho Board of Bouovolenco was held on Wednesday evening at Freemasons' Hall , when thero were a largo attendance of brethren , over whom Bro . Robert Grey presided . Tho Board of Masters was first held , and the business to bo transacted at the

Quarterly Communication of United Grand Lodgo on the Oth September was read . As this ovening was the last occasion for giving notice of motion for the September Communication , Bro . W . F . Lamonby , a lato member of tho Colonial Board , handed in a notice , but Bro . Grey

expressed a doubt , after reading the motion , whoiher it was one which was within the cognisance of Grand Lodge . Bro . Lamonby said it was not too lato to give in a notice of motion , according to the Book of Constitutions , Art . 51 . Tho Grand Secretary admitted the right of any member of

Grand Lodge to give notice of motion at tho last moment ; without having previously sent the notice to him ; but ho said that such a practice was highly inconvenient as it waa not always possible to detormino ou the instant whether the General Committee of Grand Lodge would bo

justified in placing it on the list of business . Asked whether he had an object in giving the notice withont first submitting it to the Grand Secretary , Bro . Lamonby said he had . Settling the Hat of Scrutineers for the Porch

ror next Grand Lodge concluded the business of the Board of Masters . At the Board of Benevolence , which was then opened , the brethren confirmed the recommendations at Former meeting to the sum of £ 360 , aud with 27 cases on the new list they granted a total of £ 510 to 20 of them

m various sums of £ 50 , £ 40 , £ 30 , £ 20 , and £ 10 . Four cases were deferred , aud three dismissed .
