Bro . Isaac , P . M ., then gave "The I . P . M . " in a very neat and telling speech , remarking that it would be going over old ground to expatiate on the merits of their I . P . M ., they all knew what a true and good man he was , and asked the brethren to give full honour to the toast—which was done . Bro . S . Robson , I . P . M ., in replying , said he thanked Bro . Isaac for his kind remarks , and assured thebrethren he was always pleased to do what he could to advance the best interests of the lodge .

The toast of " The Visitors , " was given in a very happy manner by Bro . Robson , to each of whom he gave a hearty welcome . Bro . F . E . Bailey , I . P . M . 1426 , replied for the visitors , and thanked ths members of the lodge for the cordial welcome they had received . He had visited many lodges , both here and abroad , but in none had he seen better working than Bro . Robson and Arthur Cooper had given them that evening , it | was quite a pleasure to be present on the occasion and listen to the faultless manner the ritual was rendered .

"The P . Ms , and Officers of the Lodge " followed , but owing to the lateness of the hour was very brief , as also were the responses . We almost forgot the toast of "The W . M . elect , " which was given in felicitous terms by Bro . Robson , and was most heartily honoured by the brethren . Bro . White responding , said he thanked the brethren for the honour done him , he promised to do his utmost to discharge the duties of the Master's chair to their satisfaction and also to the credit of the Iodge .

During the P . M . ' s response , Bro . A . Cooper , P . M ., gave a very vivid account of his visit to Cairo and other places in Egypt and the hearty welcomes he had received from Masonic lodges there . The Tyler ' s toast brought a long enjoyable evening to a regrettable close , but as "time and tide wait for no man , " neither will trains wait for travellers—particularly brother Masons—who had to "hurry up" to catch trains for their various destinations . The ceremony of raising was rendered very much more impressive by the music rendered by Bro . H . Foan , Org . 2473 , who is also choirmaster of Christ Church ,

Highbury . N ., and in the other Degrees by Bro . VV . Windsor , the OrganistTof the lodge . The musical part of the evening programme was very good , and included " A Thanksgiving Song , " "Lord of Light , " and "Tatters" by Master Charles Potter ( youngest son ot Bro . J . Potter , P . M . ) , who is a very promising pupil of the North London School for Choristers , and which elicited great applause . Bro . J . Moore ga ve the favourite , "Tommy Atkins , " and Mr . Albert Day , with his usual ability , gave " For Ever " and " Once . " The accompaniments to Master Potter were played by Bro . Foan , and the remainder by Bro . VV . Windsor , the whole arrangement being a complete success .

Woodgrange Lodge , No . 2409 . The usual monthly meeting of the above lodge was held in the new Masonic Hall , at the Princess Alice Hotel , Forest Gate , E ., on Wednesday , the 20 th inst . The meeting was of special importance by the presentation to the lodge of a handsome banner given by Bro . A . R . Trew , P . M ., PA / ., P . P . G . D . Suffolk , which presentation was made in an eloquent and descriptive speech by Bro . J . G . Stevens , P . M ., and accepted ( in the

absence of the VV . M . ( Bro . Slater ) by Bro . George Pidduck , I . P . M ., P . Z ., on behalf of the members of the lodge , in reply to which Bro . Trew feelingly responded . This being the annual period of election , Bro . Trew was again unanimously elected Treasurer , which position he has occupied since the consecration of the lodge , in addition to having the honour of being the first Worshipful Master ; Bro . Wm . Wilkinson , P . M . 129 S , S . W ., was unanimously elected VV . M . for the ensuing year ; and Bro . Bowler was again re-elected Tyler .

The Woodgrange Lodge has attained a well-deserved reputation in the eastern suburb of London , not only by the generosity of its members to all the Masonic Charities , but by the support given to the West Ham Hospital , in whose aid a most successful ball was recently given , and which no doubt will benefit considerably thereby . After partaking of an excellent supper , provided by Bro . James Copper , the usual oyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured .

Eland Lodge , No . 493 , Two years ago we published in our columns a full account of the founding of a new Mark Masons' lodge in the small manufacturing town of Elland . We then also gave the veiy interesting address which was read on that occasion by the Prov . G . Master , » ro . C . Letrh Mason , which showed how closely connected this town on the banks of

Calder was with the baronial families of the neighbourhood in the 14 th century . Sir John Elard ' s feud wilh the Beaumonts of Crcsland Hall led to tragic events , and , in order to perpetuate the name , the founders decided to call the Ldge after the murdered "light . Similar customs of so designating West Yorkshire Masonic lodges are by no T-r ? ** unco , I , mon > as instanced in the . Eland Lodge made a good start , and has ever since shown steady and consistent progress . Its first Worshipful Master was Bro . W . E . Smithies , whose skill in directing the footsteps and guarding the interests of the infant lodge doubtless led to its present satisfactory condition . To him succeeded Bro . Thomas Gaukroger Howell , whose generosity in the support of the Masonic Charities , and enthusiasm in the cause of Freemasonry , have honourably distinguished him for some years . Having previously passed through the chair of the Truth Lodge , at Huddersfield . Bro . Howell brought the

experience he had there gained to bear upon his duties at Elland , the consequence of which has been that he has fully maintaineo ? the reputation for good work which this new lodge so speedily acquired . Applying himself consistently and perseveringly , Bro . Howell added six new members during his year , and closed a successful occupancy of the chair hy ably installing his successor . He is , it may be mentioned , Vice-Patron of the Mark Benevolent Fund ; has served five Stewardships in its supoort , and is a Life Member of the West Yorkshire Mark Charity Committee . He is also a Past Grand Deacon of the province .

The annual meeting of the Eland Lodge took place on the ioth inst ., when there were present Bros . T . G . Howell , W . M . ; A . Rowe , S . W . ; W . E . Smithies , P . M ., P . P . G . W ., as J . W . ; Alf . Mitchell , J . Naylor , W . M . 137 ; John Smith , A . Maude , Arthur Law . VV . Fielding , T . Rickard , and T . Buckland . Bro . G . H . Parke , P . M ., P . G . W ., G . Treas . Eng ., who was a founder and first I . P . M . of 493 , was also present . The visitors comprised Bros . John Barker , Deputy Prov . G . M . ; W . D . Shoebridge , P . P . G . O . ; Joseph Matthewmin , Prov . G . Sec . ; W . S . Milligm , P . M . 58 ; C . E . Rose , VV . M . 5 S ; Walker Dyson , 137 ; and J . N . Hardy , Mus . Bas . 110 , Organist of Wakefield Cathedral .

After the minutes and necessary dispensitions had been read , the Deputy . Bro . John Barker , whose wife lay seriously ill , begged the W . M . to excuse his eirly departure . He could not leave , however , he said , without congratulating the W . M ., officers , and brethren upon the genuine success which had attended their efforts in relation to the lodge . He thought that to Bro . Smithies and Bro . Howell the greatest possible credit was due , and he did not doubt that ths incoming Mister , Bro . Rowe , would emulate the example which they each of them had set him . He ventured to hope that their progress would continue , wished them every good wish , and felt sure that the installation ceremony , which he could not stay to witness , would be conducted with care and

precision . Bro . Barker then left . In the early morning of the following day Mrs . Barker succumbed to the malady from which she had for some time been suffering . The W . M . elect , Bro . Rowe , was presented by the I . P . M ., Bro . W . E . Smithies , and in a most careful and impressive way , was installed in the chair of Adoniram by the retiring W . M ., Bro . T . G . Howell . No one present could help being struck with the earnest and conscientious way in which Bro . Howell did his work . On

the re-entry of the brethren , the warrant . & c , and the working tools were presented by the Installing Master , after which the officers were appointed as follows : Bros . T . G . Howell , LP . M . ; John Brook , S . W . ; A . Maude , J . W . ; J . F . Milner , M . O . ; G . Hoyle , S . O . ; R . E . Heaton , J . O . ; J . Naylor , Chap . ; Henrv Beaumont , Treas . ; A . E . Mitchell , Sec . ; A . VV . Shaw , S . D . ; R . Naylor , J . D . ; J . W . Fox , D . C . ; J . W . Broadhead , Org . ; 1 . R . Kershaw , I . G . ; A . Fielding and Garsen , Stewards ; and H . Littlewood , Tyler . This done , the addresses to the VV . M ., Wardens , Overseers , and

brethren were given most impressively by Bro . G . H . Parke , G . Treas . On the proposition of Bro . Parke , seconded by Bro . T . G . Howell , P . M ., Prov . G . D ., Bro . W . E . Smithies , P . M ., P . P . G . W ., was unanimously elected Charity Steward for the lodge . A most interesting event came next—this was the presentation to Bro . T . G . Howell of a handsome Past Master ' s jewel . In offering this gift in the name of the lodge , Bro . G . H . Parke , to whom the duty was allotted , commended the zeal and hard work which Bro . Howell had shown in thc interest of Eland Lodge , and declared he hid dons mu : h

more than that , for he had displayed his love for Freemasonry and his attachment to the Order by his continued and generous donations to its Charities . The noble way in which he had supported those Institutions , both Mark and Craft , had made Bro . Howell ' s name honourably known , not only in his own province , butelsewhere . He ( Bro . Parke ) was delighted , he said , to pin upon the breast of the retiring W . M . that smill

mark of their esteem ; with it he offered him the goodwill and best wishes of all there assembled , and he was sure they would all join in invoking God ' s blessing upon him in ' all his undertakings . Bro . T . G . Howell , in feeling terms , expressed his thinks . Bro . Parke had truly said he had done his best , and he hoped to have many more years before him in which he might show his zeal for the Order and his devotion to the eland Lodge .

After congratulations to the new W . M . had been offered by the Prov . G . Sec . on behalf of the Prov . G . Master and by all thc brethren , several certificates were signed and handed over , and lodge was closed . Refreshment , abundant and excellent , followed , the service being carried out by neatly-attired waitresses , who gave rapid , willing , and courteous attention to all . This was followed by a somewhat lengthy toast list— " The Qjeen , " ' The M . W ; G . Master and the Grand Lodge Ofiicers , " and * ' The R . W . Prov . G . Master and the Prov . G . Ollicers" were all proposed by the VV . M ., Bro . A . Rowe .

Bro . G . H . Parke replied for Grand Lodge and Bros . Henry Beaumont , Prov . G . Treasurer , and J . Matthewman , Prov . G . Secretary , performed a similar duty for the province . " The Health of the VVorshipful Master" was very heartily drunk on the proposition of the Prov . G . Sec . The toast of " The Installing Master " had a warm reception when offered by Bro . W . E . Smithies .

Bros . Rowe , W . M ., and Howell , I . P . M ., each suituibly acknowledged the compliment . Other toasts followed , with music and songs interspersed . To Bros . Buckland , Rickard , and Milligan great praise is due in this department , for they added much to the pleasure of what was acknowledged in all respects to b : a very successful function .

BRO . THE EARL AND COUNTESS OF J ERSEV and the Ladies Villiers will arrive at 54 , Lowndes-square , early next week , from Osterley Park , for the season . Bv PERMISSION of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland , a grand concert was given at Stafford House on Tuesday , in aid of clearing a debt of £ " 557 on Princess May's Sailors'Reading Rooms ' and Home at the Millwall Djck , open : d by the late Duchess of Teck , in connection with the British and Foreign Saibrs' Sxiety .

precision .

O . ; J . Naylor , Chap . ; Henrv Beaumont , Treas . ; A . E . M ., P . P .
