Two years later his services were recognised by his appointment as G . A . D . C . of the Prov . G . Lodge of Derbyshire , while in 1 SS 0 he secured the collar of the more important post of Prov . G . Registrar . But his best work has been done in behalf of the Province of Nottinghamshire , in the Prov . Grand Lodge of which he was appointed

Prov . J . G . Warden , as far back as 1 S 84 , while in 1 S 85 he took upon himself the duties of Prov . A . G . Secretary . In 18 SS he presided as W . M . over the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 402 , Nottingham—which he had joined 10 years previouslywhile in 1885 he was elected to the office of Prov . G . Secretary , and has held it uninterruptedly ever since , so much to the satisfaction of the Duke ^ of St . Albans , now Past Prov . G . M ., that last year his Grace selected him to receive the brevet rank of Past Prov . S . G . W ., in commemoration of the 21 st installation of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales as M . W . G . M . He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason in the

Abbey Chapter , No . 47 , Nottingham , in 18 79 , and in 1881 assisted in founding the Royal Sussex Chapter , No . 402 , of which the year following he was installed in the chair of First Principal . In 1 SS 2 he took a prominent part in promoting the establishment of a Prov . Grand Chapter for Nottinghamshire , and the late Comp . Sir Henry Bromley , Bart ., who was installed as G . Superintendent , selected him for the ofiice of Prov . G . S . E ., in which he has continued his labours to the present

time , except in 1 S 92 , when he served as Prov . G . H . His services to Royal Arch Masonry in this province have , indeed , been of great value , as he has helped in the formation of nearly all the chapters on the roll of Prov . Grand Chapter , and it is mainly through his exertions that the number of Royal Arch Masons in Notts has been more than trebled during the last 15 years , having in that time been

augmented from 74 to 252 . Consequently his appointment last year as 2 nd G . Std . Br . in Supreme Grand Chapter was richly deserved , and was made the subject of hearty congratulations among his Notts companions . Be it added , that Bro . Stubbs is a Life Governor of our three Institutions , and has served three Stewardships in their behalf .

GRAND ORGANIST . Bro . ALFRED KING , Mus . Doc . Oxon ., has had a very distinguished career in the Province ' of Sussex . He was initiated in thc Royal Clarence Lodge , No . 271 , Brighton , on the 18 th June , 1875 , and , in 1 S 82 , had the honour of being installed W . M . He has also acted in the same capacity in the Earl of Sussex Lodge , No . 2201 . He held the office of Prov . G . Organist in 1877 , 1 S 7 S , and 1 S 79 , and again in 18 91 , while , in 1893 , he was appointed Prov . S . G . W . He was exalted in the Lennox Chapter , No . 271 , Brighton , on the 2 nd November , 18 77 , and 10 years later was

installed M . E . Z . He was Prov . G . Organist from 18 S 4 to 1 S 90 , and again from 'At till last year , while , in 1 S 91 , hc was appointed Prov . G . J . In the Mark Degree , ™ -is P . M . of the Royal Connaught Lodge , No . 409 , Brighton , and P . Prov . J . G . Warden , and , in 1891 , was appointed G . Organist , while in the Ancient and Accepted Rite , he is Past M . W . GEORGE GRAVELEY , who is familiarly known as the " Masonic Patriarch of Essex , " was initiated in the Temperance-in-the-East L-odge , No . 898 , on the 23 rd February , 1876 , and , having passed through the junior offices , was successively appointed Junior and Senior Warden , and elected and installed in the chair of K . S . in May , 18 S 3 . He is also a joining member of the Old King ' s Arms

Lodge , No . 28 , and a member of the Correspondence Circle of Lodge Quatuor Coronati . He was exalted in the Yarborough Chapter , No . 554 , on the 14 th November , 18 7 8 , and in February , 1 SS 7 , after occupying successively the chairs of Third and Second Principal , was installed M . E . Z ., and for the second and third times in 18 S 8 and 1 S 89 . He is now , and for the last seven years has been , Treasurer of the Chapter . In July , 1884 , he was founder and first M . E . Z . of the

Temperance-in-the-East Chapter , No . S 9 8 . In iS 93 , hewas chosen to fill thechair of J . ; in 1884 and again in 1 S 95 , that of H . ; and at the present time is again presiding over the chapter as its First Principal . In March , 1892 , he was a founder and first acting P . Z . of the Guelph Chapter , No . 1685 , and is now its Treasurer ; while , in November of the same year , he was founder and first H . —and has since been installed M . E . Z . —of the Shurmur Chapter , No . 2374 , his services in its behalf being recognised , a month after its consecration , by his appointment as

Prov . ist A . G . Soj . of Essex . In 1896 , he was appointed A . G . D . C . in Supreme Grand Chapter . In the Mark Degree , to which he was advanced in the Beaconsfield Lodge , No . 205 , in November , 1878 , he served as its W , M . in 1884 ; was appointed the same year Prov . G . S . B . ; and the year following Prov . S . G . O . East Anglia ; is a P . M . of the Old Kent ( T . I . ) Lodge ; was founder and first W . M ., in 1885 , of the Temperance-in-the-East Lodge , and , on vacating the chair , was elected Treasurer : while , in 1885 , he was appointed G . I . G . in Mark Grand

Lodge ; and , in 18 S 5 , had conferred upon him the brevet rank of P . G . S . B . He joined the Panmure Lodge in 1886 , and some years since was founder and first W . M . of the Mark lodge , No . 461 , which bears his name . He is , in addition , a Royal Ark Mariner , P . C . P . of the Mount Calvary Preceptory , as well as a Past Prior of the Order of Malta . He was

perfected Rose Croix , and is Past M . W . S . in the Mount Calvary Chapterof that Degree and has taken the 30 in the A . and A . Rite . He is also a member , and has won high distinction in the Royal Order of Scotland , the Royal and Select Masters , the Allied Degrees , the Order of Rome and the Red Cross of Constantine , and the Rosicrucian Society , and , as regards our Charitable Institutions , he has

served as many as 14 Stewardships , and is a Life Governor of all of them , while for many years he has served as an elected P . M . on the Board of Benevolence . He has , indeed , done most excellent service during his Masonic career of 20 years and upwards , and more than one lodge and chapter is under a debt of gratitude to him for assistance on some special occasion .

ASSISTANT GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . LEWIS LAZARUS was initiated in thc Lodge of Joppa , No . 188 , in 18 72 , and was installed W . Master in 1877 . Since 1884 he has been , uninterruptedly , Secretary of the Lodge , and at the celebration of the lodge ' s centenary in 1889 , was presented with an illuminated address and a silver tea and coffee service in recognition of his long and valuable services . He was exalted in the Joppa Chapter in 1873 , and has three times filled the chair of First Principal , namely ,

iniS ' i , iSS 4 , and 18 S 7 . He has received two illuminated addresses and a silver tankard in respect of these services . He is also a Marie . Master M ison , hiving been advanced in the Samson and Lion Lod * e , No . 86 . He is a Life Governor of all three Institutions , and h is served four Stewardships for the Benevolent Institution , two for the Boys' Schoo ' , and one for the Girls' School , and has volunteered his services in the same capacity for thc Festiva ' s of the last two Institutions during the present year .
