M ., then proceeded to instal Bro . Thomas Gill Palmer , the W . M . elect , which ceremony he performed in a most able and impressive manner . The W . Alfred William Gabb , were initiated into the mysteries of the Craft , in a manner which reflected great credit on the newlyinstalled Master . Bro . J . O . Smith presided at the organ . All business being closed , the Brethren adjourned to the banqueting-hall of the Lodge , where an elegant and substantial banquet concluded the day ' s proceedings , and the evening was passed in the greatest harmony .
HAMBSHIRE . Pobtbkovte . —Portsmouth Lodge ( No . 717 ) . —This Lodge met at their Lodgeroom , High-street , on the 8 th January , when Bro . Henry Cast ell was installed into the chair by Bro . Hyde Pullen , D . Prov . G . M . of the Isle of Wight , in the admirable manner to which he is accustomed , in the presence of some eighteen P . Ms . The W . M . j after having been proclaimed and saluted in the several Degrees , invested Bro . Prost , P . M ., and the following Officers : — - Bros . Hollingsworth , S . W . ; Rake , J . W . ; J . J . Gait , Treas . ; . E . Gait , M . C . ; Booth , Sec . ; Weston , S . D . ; Oakshott , J . D . ; Wells , I . G . ; James and Balls , Stewards .
The business concluded , the Brethren in the evening assembled at an excellent banquet , provided hy Bro . Weston , of the Sussex Hotel , at which thirty Brethren were present . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , that of the Prov . Grand Officers of Hants was acknowledged by Bro . Capt . Savage , S . G . W . u The Prov . G . M . and Officers of the Isle of Wight , " was responded to hy
Bro . Hyde Bullen , who addressed the Brethren particularly on the great merits of Bro . Fleming , the Brov . G . M ., whose indefatigable exertions in the cause of Masonry were well known . Bro . Pleming was at present striving to establish a permanent fund for relief in his own province . This , if successful , may be said to be a step in advance , seeing that there at the present some forty applicants who are seeking relief from the Benevolent Institution .
To the toast of " Our Brethren in the Army and Navy , " Capt . Savage replied and alluded to the great accession of members , in the army especially . Bro . Gait , P . M ., rose and proposed a bumper to " The W . M . of the Portsmouth Lodge , " who promised to be a regular attendant at every meeting , and hence they might fairly anticipate another year of success . The W . M . thanked the Brethren for their kind wishes , and assured them that
no efforts should be wanting on his part to discharge the duties of his office well and worthily . The W . M . next called on the Brethren to give a cordial greeting and their warmest thanks to Bro . Hyde Bullen , who had performed so excellently and beautifully the ceremony of installation . Bro . Bullen had practised much in the Order , he had done a great deal and was doing more for the success of Masonry in the island . The W . M . alluded to the happy meeting the Hampshire Masons were present at in July last , at Steephill , which they one and all acknowledged to be a most delightful day .
Bro . Bullen said , he felt grateful for the kind and hospitable way in which he had been received , and of the good and generous feeling which existed between the two provinces , and he confidently looked forward to the union being more closely combined from the cordiality which at present existed . In allusion to his working , Bro . Bullen urged strongly the advantages of Lodges visiting each
other , and going when convenient from province to province . He assured his hearers , that the Brethren at Ryde would at anytime call a Lodge and go through the lectures of the several Degrees , for the purpose of instruction to their neighbours . The consequence of these mutual visits would be that wherever there was excellence it might be carried away to another Lodge . Mention had been made of the pleasant meeting in the island last summer ; he would use his
