throughout the world , that the Craft is cherished as warmly , as sincerely , as zealously in Scotland as in any other quarter of the globe . In thanking you for the honour which you have done the « Grand Master of England , I repeat that the duty is incumbent upon this deputation to report in the most favourable terms of the reception they have met with at your hands , and of the magnificent spectacle of which you have afforded them the contemplation . Quinton , in returning thanks , said that to enunciate his feelings would be impossible . He could hardly venture to express to them the alacrity and zeal with which the Grand Lodge of Ireland , on being summoned to this demonstration , acceded to their request to send a deputation . ( Hear , hear . ) They were most truly gratified by the spectacle which had been presented to their view to-day . So interesting an occasion could not fail to be gratifying to every
well-wisher of Freemasonry ; but to see such an assemblage as they had witnessed —an assemblage that in their wildest fancy they could hardly have contemplated —( cheers)—was really overpowering . It required much more eloquence than he could by possibility command to express his feelings upon it ; but this he would say , that he joined most sincerely with Lord Panmure in imploring the blessing of the Great Architect of the universe upon the work they had commenced this day , trusting that it might be for ages a nucleus round which Freemasonry in Scotland would continue to flourish . The R . W . Lord Panmure then said : —Brethren , by the permission of the M . W . G . M . I intrude myself upon you again ; and I rise for the purpose of proposing a toast , which , although intimately connected with your own interests , I must nevertheless beg you to assist me in doing the greatest honour to . It is to the health of an individual at present the supreme head of the Craft in Scotlandto one who has not filled that high situation with merely a name for doing its duties . ( Cheers . ) Ever since the Duke of Athole has been Grand Master of
Scotland , he has made it his earnest endeavour to advance the interests of the Craft to the utmost of his ability—( cheers)—and he has achieved this by giving his presence and leading the Craft on all occasions where Masonic duties were to be performed in any part of Scotland . It is , and it must be , subject of pride to your M . W . G . M ., to know that such a national erection as the Scott monument was inaugurated under his presidency It must be a source of pride to him to know that in the west he has laid the foundation of a bridge which is to afford
convenience not only to multitudes of the citizens of Glasgow , but to the trade of a city third only in the world . We owe to the Grand Master a deep debt of gratitude for laying the foundation stone of a refuge for sickness and misfortune in another great trading city of Scotland , namely , in Dundee ; and if ho did nothing else as a Mason in Scotland , he has this day put the crowning stone to
this triumph as Grand Master of Scotland in laying the foundation stone of this grand Masonic hall . ( Cheers . ) These are but few of the works of the Grand Master . I will not detain you , for it would occupy you too long to go over the whole of them . Suffice it for me to say , that I think you should be proud of one who has filled your throne so long , with so much credit to himself , and so ' much benefit to the Craft in Scotland . ( Cheers . )
