In the course of the evening many admirable addresses were made on the usual loyal and Masonic toast , which want of space prevents our prevents our reporting , but we must not omit an outline of the Prov . G . M . ' s address , in proposing the toast of the evening , u . Health and happiness to the newly-appointed W . M ., Bro . Martyn and his bride , " He observed that Bro . Martyn was an illustration of what steady perseverance exhibited ; he had gone through his university career
with honour and credit , and Had secured alike the love and esteem not only of his companions but of all those who who were associated with him ; that in Masonry he had exhibited on all occasions his devotedness to its interests , in supporting its charities on every occasion which presented itself , showing that he was a Mason in more than name ; that his appointment that day wa , s the reward of merit , and that on no previous occasicn had he proposed a toast more heartfelt and with greater sincerity .
Bro . Martyn ( who was most warmly received ) said that he felt he could scarcely deserve all that had been said of him by the Prov . G . M . ; that his progress in Masonry had been to him a truly happy time—that he should look back on his Oxford career with pride and satisfaction , for he had made many valuable friendships , and he felt he had not made a single enemy . To Masonry he owed much , nor could he forget the great honour and kindness that had been shown to him at the Apollo banquet in February last , when the Brethren of that Lodge departed from
the usual routine of toasts to remember him and his wife , Mrs . Martyn , who entertained a very high opinion of Masonry and deserved to be a Mason ' s wifeto him she had been all in all—and he most earnestly advised his college friends to follow his example . He felt that a greater amount of good feeling had been exhibited towards him than had fallen to the lot of many— -he had ever desired
to be useful in that S | 3 here that kind Providence had placed him in . He should long remember the present moment , when surrounded by so many kind and valued friends , he felt that the expressions poured forth by the Prov . G . M . were echoed by all , and he hoped that he should ever try to deserve the good opinion that had been expressed . In conclusion , and from his heart , truly did he thank them , and in those thanks his dear wife most heartily concurred .
The evening was spent most happily , and it was observed that on no former occasion has greater pleasure been experienced . The W . M . presided with great ability , and prefaced his toasts with considerable judgment . and good taste , exhibiting in his bearing that amiableness of disposition that has so deservedly endeared him , not only to all his Brother Masons , but to all who have the pleasure of knowing him .
