NORTH CAROLINA . GRAND LODGE OF NORTH CAROLINA . The address of Bro . Pleasant A . Hall , M . W . G . M ., read before the Grand Lodge df North Carolina , at its last annual communication , is a choice Masonic production . His remarks in regard to the " injudicious policy , " as he terms it , of ^ multipl y ing Lodges , " are well worth the consideration of the Craft . They are applicable to every other jurisdiction as well as North Carolina . He also discourses most eloquently uponthose growing evilswhich prevail all over the
land , that of " making Masons according to the principles of manifest destiny , " as well as a hastiness of Lodge procedure , which he remarks , " is a sort of young Americanism that is becoming incorporated into the practical workings of subordinate Lodges . * * * As if it was necessary that everything should be controlled by the same laws which govern locomotion through the influences of steam or the transmission of intelligence by the operations of the telegraph . The President of the Board of Trustees of St . John s College made an interesting report in relation to the building , in which he informed the Grand Lodge that it was completed . The report made by the G . Sec ., William T . Bain , is full of yaluable information . He states having received up to the meeting for Lodge dues ^& c ., 1 , 717 dols . 75 c He also informs us that nine Lodges were chartered at the former annual communication , and that the Grand Master granted six dispensations for new Lodges .
COLUMBIA . CRAND LODGE OF DISTRICT OE COLUMBIA . We are in the receipt of a copy of the proceedings of the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia , had at the several communications from May 7 th . to December 27 th , 1857 , for which we are indebted to the politeness of the R . W . G . Sec . Bro . G . A . Schwarzman . At the semi-annual communication in May , the M . W . G . M . Bro . Geo . C . Whiting , delivered an admirable address , in which he
solemnly enjoined the necessity of a strict examination of the character of all applicants , and gave it " strictly in charge " to let every candidate for Masonry approach our doors of his own free will and accord , and unbiassed by the slightest word of solicitation , inducement , or advice . He suggested , and upon the report of the committee appointed to examine the address , a committee was appointed consisting of Bros . B , B . French , Y . P . Page , and J , W . Nairn , to prepare a
history of the Grand Lodge , to which committee was added Bro . W . J . Rhees , who had already taken steps to prepare a history of the Grand Lodge . A charter was granted at this communication to a number of good and worthy Brethren for a new Lodge , called the Dawson Lodge . A special communication was called on the 26 th of May to attend the funeral obsequies of the lamented P . G . M . Bro . Chas . S . Erailey , on which occasion Bro . B . B . French made a most eloquent and feeling address .
On the morning of June 24 th a special communication was held for the purpose of repairing to Mount Yernon and celebrating the day at the tomb of Washington , where M . W . P . G . M ., B . B . French , delivered a chaste and beautiful address , which was published in our columns , and Rev . Bro . A . E . N " . Rolfe also . delivered an address , both of which are printed with the proceedings . The annual communication was held on the 3 rd of November , at which a full representation was
present . The Grand Master delivered an address , in which he gives a brief sketch of the life of P . G . M . Frailey , and pays a well-merited tribute to his virtues and his worth .
