BEECHAM'S ILLUSTRATED CHRISTMAS ANNUAL
fTTHE craze for light reading at the Christmas Season seems to be as -L pronounced as ever , and our popular Advertisers seem fully alive to this fact . Last year the Proprietor of Beecham ' s Pills , a medicine which has deservedly secured for itself a high repute , both in this country and abroad , issued what may be styled " a wondeiful pennyworth . " Mr . Beecham this year
seem- to be equally successful ; his second annual issue in before n * , i ! , nd the . book is undoubtedly superior to its pioneer . It cm'tHii . s 100 naures of oriuitml tales sp > 'cinlly written by the following well-know , arid eminent authors : —Joseph Hatton , Florence Marryatt , Fergus Hiim > -, Surah Hamer , George Manville Fenn , James
Greenwood , H . F . Wood , Ida Lemon , Sir Gilbert E . Campbell , Bart ., Howard Paul , Dr . J . W . Kirton . It is well printed , in clear type , and bein ^ quite a marvel at the price , as far as literature i 3 concerned , is likely to take rank as one of the best Magazines of the season . The proprietor of " Beecham's Pills " deserves the encouragement of lovers of fiction for the treat he has placed within the reach of all .

— :: o—Vaudeville . — -The success that attended the production of Mr . Buohanan's version of Fielding ' s novel " Joseph Andrews " was sufficient reason for Mr . Thome to resume tho comedy for his autumn season , and the reception accorded to it last week proves
the correctness of the genial manager ' s perception . Additional interest is lent to the revival as many of the characters are sustained by performers other than the original casto , and they have had the advantage of an extended country tour before appearing in London . Mr . Frank Gillmore now undertakes the rdle of the hero , with
considerable ability , and Miss Ella Bannister gives a graceful interpretation of the persecuted Fanny ; Miss Gladys Ffolliott plays Lady Booby with discretion , Miss Sylvia Hodson makes a capital Mistress Slipslop , and Miss Coralie Owen endows the small part of Mrs . Adams with much pathos . Another new comer is Mr . O . Harbury
who is very effective as the dignified Sir George Wilson . Of course Mr . Thome resumes hi 3 inimitable impersonation of Parson Adams , —he could not well be spared , —and was greetad with tremendous applause when he made his appearance on the stage . Mr . Fred Thome returns with his olever character sketch of the
drunken Welsh parson still further delineated . Mr . Blythe also appears again as the Gipsy Jim , and Mr . Cyril Maude as the young beau , Lord Fellamar , enacts the part in a manner that could hardly be surpassed . The same careful stage arrangements and appropriate
scenery are presented ; and the new aot drop , by Mr . Walter Hann , representing Windsor Castle from the Thames , was much admired . We can safely predict a further run of prosperity for the pieoe , whioh affords an admirable illustration of English life during the last century .
St . James's Hall . —We recently paid a visit to the Moore and Burgess Minstrels , at their hall in Piccadilly , and , judging from the reception giveu by a good audience to the different artisteB , they remain as popular as ever . Starting in the goood old-fashioned style , with songs , comic and sentimental , to be followed in the second part
by miscellaneous items , the present programme thus formed is a most attractive one . Suoh popular vocalists as Messrs . Ralph Hunt , Stockwell , Vernon Reed , Leo Kloss , T . Spurr , Walter Hawkins , P . Gaulois , Clement Stewart score well in the sentimental lice , while the comio business is well kept going by Messrs . G . W . Moore , Eugene
StrattoD , Sam Eaebnrn , T . Somers , T . Birohmore , and Pete Dwight . The first part concludes with a grand seleotion from Auber ' s opera of " Massaniello , " whioh is splendidly rendered by the choir and orchestra of the company . In the second part we have Mr . P . C . Shortis exhibiting his skill as a banjo and violin player . The music that
this gentleman gets out of these two instruments is something to be remembered , and clearly puts Mr . Shortis nearly , if not quite , at the top of the tree in this special line . This is followed by a capital song and dance by Mr . T . Somers , and then comes " Sim Dimpsey , " given by Messrs . Eugene Stratton , Sam Raebnm , and
Pearce . Signor Benedetto , the male soprano , is certainly worth hearing , while the peroration on modern events by Mr . Tom Birch , more is very amusing . Mr . Sam Eaebnrn gives an amusing banjo
selection of quaint parodies , after which tho entertainment is brought to a close by a laughable sketch , entitled " Military Tactics . " We may add that the programme throughout is a capital one , and will repay any one who may go to hear it .
Rapid progress is being made at Drury Lane with the Christmas pantomime , which is to be produced on Boxing night . The subject is " Jack and the Beanstalk , " which Messrs . Augustus Harris and Harry Nicholls have made very amusing . The following company has been secured : —Messrs . Harry Nicholls , Herbert Campbell , Dan
Leno , Chas . Laurie , Brothers Griffiths , George Conquest jun ., Leopold Brothers , Tom Pleon , Walter Stanton , Harry Payne ; and the Misses Harriett Vernon , Marie Faudelle , Marie Duggau , Agnes Hewitt , Edith Charteris , Rosie Deering , Sybil Grey , with Mdlle . Zan .
fretti and iBnea ( the Flying Dancer ) . The music is by Walter Slaughter , the scenery by Messrs . Dayes and Caney , Koutsky and Perkins , and the dresses have been executed by Auguste et Cie ., Mons . Landolff , Paris , Miss Palmer and Mrs Atkins .
Messrs . Gilbert and Sullivan ' s new opera will be produced at the Savoy Theatre this ( Saturday ) evening . " Master and Man , " by G . E . Sims and Henry Pettitt , is in active rehearsal , and will be shortly produced at the Princess's .
The circus at Covent Garden this year premises to be muoh better in all respects than its predecessors . Attractions of all kinds are promised , while for children a grand spectacle pantomime on the subject of "Cinderella" will be provided . Mons . Eaney has been engaged as equestrian director .
Mr . Heury Irving announces two special matinees of " The Dead Heart" on Monday and Tuesday , 23 rd and 24 th in 3 t ., at half past two , on which occaaions there will be no evening performance . The Alhambra announces a speoial matineo for Saturday , the 14 th inst ., when the Naval and Military spectacle , " Our Army and

Herr Sandow and Professor Attila will perform their marvellous athletie feats ; while James Fawn , Harry Randall , Walter Munroe , Mias Marie Coleridge , Marie Lloyd , Rezene aid Robini , Walter Stanton and Mddle .
