ROYAL ARCH MASONRY IN CUMBERLAND .
IT was our good fortune last week to spend two or three days among the everlasting hills of canny Cnmberland . As onr custom is , we sought ont the brethren , and found we were fortunate as to time , as the Whitehaven and Wigton Chapters held their Annual Installation Festivals respectively on the first and second of November . On arriving at the Masonio Temple in College-street , Whitehaven , we found quite a crowd of Companions , and every face bespoke interest
in the day s proceedings . The Chapter was opened in dne form , according to ancient custom , and in a very efficient manner . The bulk of the Companions admitted , the minutes were read . Tho ballot was then taken for several candidates , and four of the number being present , thev were exalted by the Principals , ably assisted by Comps . John Barr P . Z Prov . G . Trea , and Rothery P . S . ; the exaltations
being comp l eted , the M . E . Z ., Comp . Sandwith , called upon E . Comp . John Bowes P . Z . Prov . G . Scribe N ., to undertake the duties of installing Principal . In due course Comps . Dr . Hendy , W . P . Lamonley and Edward Tyson , were presented respectively as Z ., H ., and J . elect , for the benefit of installation , which ceremony was duly and regularly performed , and on the return of the Companions the new
Chiefs wero proclaimed , greeted , and saluted . The Officers for the ensuing year having been invested , and the benediction pronounced , a cordial and hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Comp . Bowes for his valuable and efficient services . The Companions , now to the number of fifty , adjourned to the banquetting-room , where an excellent dinner was served by Bro . Smith of the Albion Hotel . Grace
before and after meat being said by Joshua , the usual Royal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . Comps . Barr and Sandwith came in for a large share of praise , for their long . continued interest in Royal Arch Masonry . The health of the Installing Principal Comp . Bowes called forth many expressions of thanks and obligation for many years of valuable assistance . We gathered that the Chapter ,
after a period of great activity , fell asleep , and was revived under the fostering care of Comp . Captain Mott ; thab ex-Companion being called to the Grand Chapter above , the choice of a Preceptor fell upon Ex . Comp . Bowes , long-well known in Cnmberland and Westmoreland for his active services in the Craft . That Comp . readily complied with the wishes of the members of the Chapter ; he exalted many brethren ,
and conducted a Chapter of Instruction . Comp . Barr stood to the front , ably assisted by Comp . Tyson as P . S ., and the Sun , Square and Compasses Chapter , No . 119 , has added a very large number of members to its roll . Ex . Comp . Bowes has annaally visited the Chapter and installed the Chiefs , and now No . 119 is one of the largest Chapters in the county , and its working an example to all .
After a pleasant evening the Companions separated , well satisfied with the day ' s procpediogs . The next day , Saturday , the annual meeting of the Chapter of St . John , No . 327 , Wigton , was held . A great gloom , however , overspread the Convocation , for Ex . Comp . John Lemon was interred that day . The whole town was in mourning attire , and universal regret was expressed on all sides for the heavy
loss Masonry had sustained by the death of Bro . Lemon . He had been Senior Warden of the Province , and for many years its Trea « surer . The Chapter met , and Ex . Comps . James Gardiner , Joseph Pearson , and W . H . Hoodless , were respectively installed as Z ., H . and J . The Officers having beeu invested , and the ceremony completed , the Chapter was closed , and the Companions went in a body to the
Railway Station to join the funeral party . After the funeral , the Companions partook of luncheon , but speeches and salutes were dis > pensed with , in consequence of the melancholy circumstances under which the Chapter met . We were impressed , during our visit , with the necessity of a Chapter at Maryport , this town is mid . way between Whitehaven and Wigton . The Whitehaven Chapter is overgrown ,
and there are a large number of R . A . Companions at Maryport , well able to work and sustain a Chapter . If we may presume to make a suggestion , it will be , that a Chapter be immediatel y formed at Mary , port , and , out of compliment to one of the oldest R . A . Masons in the Province , called " tho Nicholson Chapter . " We are sure thab the
M . E . Prov . G . Superintendent , Lord Bective , and Colonel Whitwell would view such a step with favour . If another friend and adviser was wanted , we are sure that Comp . Bowes ' s best services would be at the disposal of the Maiyport Companions . We commend thia suggestion to all whom it may concern . Veroum sap .

We are much indebted to those artists who make ib their business from time to time to cater fur the enj lyment of the public , and to providetheirfrieuds with the meaus of spending an evening rationally and pleasantly . Miss Florence Smart , whose second evening concert , at the Athenaeum in Camdeu Road , we attended on Tuesday , deserves both credit aud support for the spirited manner in which
she has got np thi-se enteriaintneuts , and her evident desire to please her patrons . The programme for the above evening was mil , and the music— the son ^ s especially—well received by a large , intelligmit , and appreciative uudiunce . We might , perhaps , say that some of the songs were a trifle too long , considering the number set down , but it we may judge by the repeated encores that were demanded , tbe majority of those present thoroughly enjoyed them .
It would be an invidious task to point out individual excellence , seeing that all the artists acquitted themselves well . We will add , however , one word as regards Miss Sow t . Her performances during the evening must have satisfi . d the must fastidious listener , and her persevering efforts to please won entire approbation . We o istrve that the third of these concerts is arranged to be given at the same place , on Tuesday , the 17 th Decwmber , wh -n we are assured the young lad y will recuive . ftuother hearty reception .
