suitably inscribed vellum in a gold frame congratulating him on his appointment to grand office . Letters of regret at inability to attend were read from Bros . Lord Holmesdale , G . M . Kent ; Eastes , D . P . G . M . Kent ; Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Sec , and others , and then the lodge was closed , after " Hearty good wishes " had been apportioned by the visiting brethren present . The banquet was served in " the Gold Room of the Institution ,
and at its conclusion the W . M , gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts . Bro . Bateman , I . P . M ., was entrusted with the toast of " Pro G . M . and Deputy G . M ., " and said tfiat " good wine needed no bush . " They were all aware that politics were not admitted into Masonry ; but they could be otherwise than delighted to know that Bros , the Earl of Carnarvon and the Earl of Lathom were appointed to distinguished
positions in her Majesty ' s service . He asked them to drink the toast in bumpers . The Worshipful Master then proposed j the toast of "Lord Holmesdale , Prov . Grand Master of Kent , " and said he did not intend to take up their time by making long speeches , as they desired to have a little harmony , but he could not allow that toast to go by without its being received with enthusiasm . They all knew that his lordship was present at the consecration
of the lodge , and that he had attended the last installation meeting , showing thereby the interest he took in the lodge and its progress . Bro . E . Bright then proposed the toast of " Bro . Eastes , D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " He saidjthe distinguished Mason who worked so ardously with Lord Holmesdale , as D . G . M ., was in every way worthy of his position , and as for their our
lodge it was not unconspicuous by its members on the roll of Grand Lodge . He coupled the toast with the name of Bro . Chillingworth , who briefly returned thanks . Bro . Bateman then proposed the toast of " The W . M . " He said that once again , and for the last time , he was entrusted with the gavel for the purpose of proposing the toast of the evening , the W . M ., a circumstance that would , he felt sure , afford them very great satisfaction .
They only dined once a year , and starved the other 36 4 da ^ s , yet , notwithstanding that , they were a very happy community , or at least they tried to be happy . The chair of K . S . was a most important one , and he felt sure that they , one and all , felt much obliged to him for vacating it in favour of such a good brother as Dr . Elliot . Well , those who knew anything of Freemasonry knew that it was not a tissue of mere jokes and pleasantry . The
W . M . knew and appreciated that , and knew as he and they knew , the true nobility of its attributes . Among the thousands of members under its banners there might be some unworthy ones , and it behoved them all to look to it , so that its giorious traditions were kept pure and unsullied . He fully believed the W . M . would carry out the duties of his position as his predecessors had done , and he wished him health , and that T . G . A . O . T . U . would so help him
that at the end of his year of office the universal acclammation of the brethren would be " well done . " The Worshipful Master , in response , said he had in the first place to thank them for their hearty reception of the toast , and could only say that he should try to do his duty to their satisfaction . He had a most difficult task before him , and while he did not wish to make invidious remarks , yet he could not help saying that the VV . M . he had to
follow was in every respect a most miraculous one for accurate working , and he ( the W . M . ) wondered how he did it . He would , however , uphold the dignity of the position both in the lodge and in himself . If he should make any little mistake they must excuse him , as his time was not always his own . He had been a Mason since 1 S 70 , and although he had not followed it up at an earlier period , yet now that he had gone into it again , he should endeavour to
carry out the duties entrusted to him with credit to himself and satisfaction to the lodge . He then gave a detailed history of the rise and progress of the lodge since it formation at Dr . Spurrell ' s mansion , some three years ago , and paid a high tribute to the indefatigable energy of the I . P . M . in finishing the work then and there begun , and , in conclusion , assured them that the honour paid him that night would never be effaced from his memory .
In response to the toast of "The Past Masters , " Bro . Bateman thanked the brethren for their cordial support . The work of a new lodge like theirs was like the working of the engines of a new steamer—it wanted careful attention until it got into order , and now he believed the engines of their lodge were in good working order , and fit to go the pace . He in eloquent terms acknowledged the hearty reception he had received in his calls for subscriptions , and
agreed that they might take it as a " fait accompli " the success of the lodge . Of course they had a mortgage on the building ; but every respectable man now-a-days had a mortgage , so that they were no worse than their neighbours . He trusted soon to have to report that their venture had and weathered the storm , and , bv the aid of the Past Masters officers , had been safely steered into the harbour of success . Bro . Dr . Spurrell , P . M . and P . P . G . J . W . Kent , also returned thanks briefly .
"The Visitors" were represented by Bros . Strapp and C . Lightbody , S . W . of ., 90 . "The Officers " were toasted , and Bro . E . Bright , S . W . and P . P . G . S . W . Middx ., responded . Among the other brethren present and not above
enumerated were Bros . A . Penfold , P . M ., P . G . Stwd . Kent ; L . L . Barnes , S . Keyes , G . Graham , E . H . Joynson , G . Stteeten , J . Blythe , F . G . Houghton , F . E . Houghton , H . Ingram , 142 S ; and J . P . White , 5 S 2 . After the confirmation of the minutes of the last regular meeting , Bros . John Prior and Edward Fisher were raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason . Bro . R . A . Bell was then raised to the Fellow Craft Degree , the VV . M .
efficiently performing the ritual , and Bro . Palmer , S . W ., delivering the charge and working tools in a most masterly manner . Mr . T . J . Cripps , and Mr . J . A . Stokes , who had been previously balloted for were then admitted to the mysteries and privileges of antient Freemasonry , Bro . A . L . Emanuel most impressively delivering the beautiful ritual . Bro . P . H . Emanuel , S . D ., explained the working tools , and Bro . Palmer , S . W ., delivering the charge .
Bro . Haldane , P . M ., said that a very pleasant duty devolved upon him in presenting to the W . M . a gold founder ' s jewel from the founders of the lodge . It needed very few words from him as the brethren were gratified that he ( the VV . M . ) had worked so zealously to carry out his duties . ( The jewel was then attached to the W . M . 's coat and the founders simultaneously adorned their breasts with one each also ) , Bro . Haldane continued and said that there
was a still more pleasant duty for him to fulfil , and that was to present Bro . A . L . Emanuel , I . P . M ., with an illuminated address . Bro . Emanuel was a most intimate and dear friend of his and he could not say how he valued his services at all times . He hoped that Bro . Emanuel would receive it with all the good will from the donors and in days to come his children , if he had any , could look upon his many testimonials that he had and say how their father
was respected . The Worshipful Master said it was most gratifying to him to receive such a mark of favour . He had endeavoured to carry out his duties as they should be and had been desirous of meeting the wishes of all to further the interests of the lodge . It appeared from the very handsome testimonial that he had been successful and he would continue to do his utmost to gain the confidence of all . Bro . A . L . Emanuel , I . P . M ., responded , and said he was
taken by surprise that evening . When he first moved forthe foundation of the lodge he never anticipated such an address . He admitted having met some ups and downs at the starting ; but one and all had stuck together , and they felt proud of the Portsmouth Temperance Lodge . As long as he lived he would uphold the lodge they had fought for . They knew that the name of the lodge was not liked by some in the borough and likewise the province . He
hoped every one would rally round the VV . M . and founders and fight for that which was nearest and dearest to them . Since the formation of the lodge he had not tasted one drop of intoxicating liquor , as he should consider it a mockery , as one of the founders , to imbibe intoxicating drinks . He had been a better man in body and mind since that . He again thanked the brethren for their kind appreciation of his humble services .
The founder's jewel ( which was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ) consisted of the five-pointed star , whilst in the centre was the borough of Portsmouth seal , enamelled in colours . This is suspended by a blue ribbon from a bar , on which is enamelled " founder . " Around the seal is the name and number of lodge . The illuminated address , which was beautifully written and mounted in a massive gilt frame , read as follows :
"To Bro . A . Leon Emanuel , I . P . M ., P . P . G . J . D . Hants and Isle of Wight , —We , the Worshipful Master , officers , and brethren of the Portsmouth Temperance Lodge , No . 20 CS , desire to express our high appreciation of the great assistance rendered by you in founding this lodge . Impressed with the belief that the lodge would conduce to the welfare of the Craft in this borough , your advice and
influence were most cheerfully given ; and in conveying to you our best thanks for your valuable co-operation , owing to which obstacles disappeared and the lodge was successfully started , we venture to trust that it may please the Great Architect of the Universe to spare you for many years to be of service to Freemasonry and other useful objects . " Several candidates for initiation and joining members were proposed , and the lodge was closed in due form .

Presentation To Bro. F. W. Brodie, Secretary Of Semper Fidelis Lodge, No. 1254.
PRESENTATION TO BRO . F . W . BRODIE , SECRETARY OF SEMPER FIDELIS LODGE , No . 1254 .
The brethren of the above lodge , on the occasion of a visit to Stonehenge , presented Bro . F . W . Brodie , the Secretary of the lodge , with a pleasing testimony of regard and esteem . The followine interestincr account of the
proceedings is from the Devon and Exeter Gazette : The VV . M ., Bro . Thomas Andrew , F . G . S ., observed that he had a very pleasing and unexpected duty to perform . Many of the brethren were aware that they were about to lose the services of their Secretary , Bro . F . VV . Brodie , who was then on his way to Maidstone . The lodge had already voted him an address , but the notice had been so short that it had not yet been completed by Bro . Clark .
They also knew that on Saturday Bro . Brodie s colleagues and the other employes at the Gazette office , presented him with a parting gift in the shape of a gold albert without an appendage . It had been suggested by the Past Masters of the lodge that they should supply this deficiency , and in recognition of the zealous and courteous manner in
which Bro . lirodie nad carried out tus duties , they now desired to present him with a gold ^ pendant to attach to ^ the chain . Bro . F . VV . BRODIE briefly acknowledged the compliment , and said that this would be another link to the chain which bound him to his mother lodge and to his numerous friends in Exeter .
