The lodge having been opened and thc minutes confirmed , and Bros . G . F . Edwards and T . C . Yates were
raised , Bros . R . Clay , VV . Shoobert and E . Brooks next received the Second Degree , and then Mr . John Ward was balloted for and initiated . Bro . J . VV . Marshall , of 1044 , was also accepted as a member of the the lodge . The election of W . M ., Treasurer , Tyler and Audit Committee was the next business before the lodge , Bro . Smart , the J . W . being chosen for the offiice of W . M . The S . W . of the lodge is at thc present time in the chair of
another lodge , and therefore being unable to fulfil the office here , it became necessary to depart from the usual course adopted by the William Preston Lodge of electing the S . W . to the chair , but it is anticipated he will be chosen at the next election . Bro . Miller was unanimously re-elected as Treasurer , and a similar result followed with regard to the Tyler . Five brethren were elected to assist the officers of the lodge in the Audit . The case of a late brother of
thc lodge who is now in distressed circumstances was next brought before the members , and a sum of ten pounds was unanimously voted from the Benevolent Fund of the lodge on his behalf . It was proposed by Bro . Worrell , and ultimately carried , that a P . M . 's jewel should be provided from the lodge fund , for Bro . Kidman on bis retirement from tbe chair . Nothing further offering , the W . M . closed the lodge , and
the brethren proceeded to banquet , at which ladies also were present . It may be remembered that under the mastership of Bro . Cutmore the brethren of this lodge so far departed from the usual course of Masonic routine as to inaugurate a "ladies night , " which passing off in a very successful manner , his successor determined on a similar innovation . On the last occasion it was thought not out of place for gentlemen who were not Masons to be present also , but this
meeting was restricted to ladies and brethren only , an alteration we think needful ; for although there is really little Masonic about the banquet , except perhaps that it is presided over by the officers of tbe lodge and is held immediately after the conclusion of the lodge business , it is as well to exclude gentlemen who are not members of the Order . fcs Bro . Kidman ably presided at the banquet , and , after grace had been sung , proceeded to give the usual toasts .
In replying to that proposed in bis own honour by the I . P . M ., Bro . Kidman referred to the present being the last occasion on which be would have the pleasure of presiding as W . M . He most heartily thanked the officers who had so ably supported him during bis year of office—the Past Masters , who had really been his right band supporters ; and the brethren of the lodge generally , who had , one and all , used every endeavour to promote the good of the lodge
and make his term of presidency a happy and successful one . He felt really gratified at the way in which the toast just proposed had been received , and could but remember with pride the hearty way in which , in lodge , the proposal of Bro . Worrell had been received . He was also glad it had been decided to invite ladies on the present occasion , as he felt their presence was likely to give them a better opinion of Freemasonry , and whenever that could be
accomplished good to the Order must follow . He then proposed " The Health of the Initiate , " who in a few wellchosen words acknowledged the compliment . To the toast of "The Visitors" Bros . Baldwin and Seymour Smith replied , both of whom congratulated the W . M . and members generally on the success which had attended their departure from the usual run of Masonic gatherings . Each of thc Past Masters replied to the toast with which their names were associated ; and then " The Treasurer , " " The
Secretary , " and "The W . M . Elect" were honoured . Bro . Miller proposed "The Health of the Ladies , " on whose behalf Bro . Williams acknowledged tbe toast . "The Officers of the Lodge" having been given from tbe chair and acknowledged , the Tyler gave the concluding toast . During the evening a charming selection of music was gone through under the direction of Bro . VV . Worrell , P . M . and Sec . One of the guests also favoured the company with a song , which was deservedly encored .

Several emergency meetings have been held since the consecration in April last , for the purpose of initiating members , and at thc last emergency meeting , held on the Sth inst ., Bros . Anderson , Bosher ,
G . T . Acock and C . W . Acock , were raised to the Third Degree , and Bros . Grainger , Powell and Bridgland were passed to the Second Degree . On this occasion the following brethren were present : Bros . W . H . Hook , W . M . ; J . VV . Brooke , P . M . 1 SS 9 ; VV . VV . Linscott . S . W . ; L . C . N . Nicod , J . W . ; R . P . For . re , Treas . ; A . J . Bellis , Sec ; VV . R . Burnett , S . D . ; A . R . VV . Powles

The minutes of the consecration meeting , held on tbe
21 st April , and of the emergency meetings of the 5 th and 19 th May , iOth June , and Sth September were read and confirmed . Bro . C . J . Sellers , of the Fiimenza Lodge , Liston , was elected a joining member , and Messrs . E . Eagle , L . E . Eagle , J . A . Gurney and W . Sweeting , were initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M . Bro . VV . IT . Hook . Sanction was also granted for the formation of a lodgeof instruction
to be called " The Selwyn Lodge of Instruction . " The brethren afterwards sat down to a very recherche banquet provided by Bro . J , S . Gurney . The ' usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , and in proposing that of "The M . W . G . M ., " tbe W . M . said they must consider themselves fortunate in having a warrant granted at a time when they were so difficult to obtain ; he thouirht it was an
evidence of the great interest H . R . H . took in all that concerned the Craft , and be was proud to say the M . W . G . M . had himself signed the warrant . In proposing "The Grand Officers" the W . M . said on that occasion he should refer particularly to those who were present at the consecration of the lodge , and especially to the most excellent working of thc ceremony by our Very Worshipful Bro . the
Grand Secretary , and bore testimony , to the kind , genial , and courteous behaviour of all . Bro . J . VV . Brooke , P . M . then proposed "The Health of the W . M . " and said it was his duty and his pleasure to do so . It was his duty because be appeared before them in the capacity of I . P . M ., and therefore tbe toast came to him as a duty ; and it was his pleasure to propose it
because their W . M . was one of his oldest Masonic friends , and was in every way deserving of all the kind things that could be said of him , and he thought he deserved the thanks not only of the lodge , but of all the Masons of the neighbourhood , in having undertaken at bis age the gigantic task of founding a new lodge and the duties of Master for the first year . " If
anything were wanting to justify the wisdom of the foresight of the W . M . in founding the lodge , the splendid gathering that was assembled there that night was an ample and sufficient proof . When the lod ge was founded there were but seven , and now on this , the first regular meeting of the lodge , they numbered over thirty members . This must be considered an ' ample proof of the want of a lodrrc in the
neighbourhood . How had that result been arrived at ? Why , by hard work ; for since thc consecration they had had four emergency meetings , and the First , Second , and Third Degrees had been worked , and some of tbe initiates of the lodge were sitting at that table as Master Alasons on this , its first regular meeting . The W . M . deserved thc
highest praise for his close attention to the interests of the lodge ; and the excellent manner in which he worked the ceremonies was an example to be copied b y all who had to follow him ; therefore , lie ( Bro . Brooke ) felt lie was only echoing the sentiments of every brother in wishing the W . M . on this , their first meeting , health and strength to carry out the duties he had imposed on himself , and a

happy and prosperous year of office . Bro . W . H . Hook , W . M ., thanked trie brethren for the hearty and cordial reception they had given to this toast , butjwould not take the whole credit to himself , as the idea of founding the lodge did not originate with him , though , when the subject was mentioned to him , he threw himself with heart and soul into the work , and when asked to undertake the formation of
the lodge and the dutiesof first W . M . he readily consented , feeling the great need that existed for a lodge in that neighbourhood . He desired to acknowledge in the fullest manner the great assistance he had received from each of the founders , and their ready acquiesence in everything that he proposed to do , and this , he thought , was the secret of their unprecedented success ; and be was proud and
gratified to see that the Selwyn Lodge had at that early stage of its career taken so deep and firm a root . He took , that occasion of acknowledging the assistance they had received from Bro . Past Master Brooke and other friends while the lodg-e was still in embryo , and for recommending their petition to the favourable consideration of Grand Lodge ; and no effort would be wanting on bis part—and he was
sure there would not be on the part of the ofiicers and members—in making the lodge all that bad been said it would be , and also worthy of the name it bears . He concluded by expressing his heartfelt thanks for the enthusiastic manner in which the brethren had responded to the toast . The W . M . next proposed the toast of the evening —that of "The Four Initiates , Bros . Eagle , L . E . Eagle " ,
Gurney , and Sweeting , " who severally replied in becoming terms . The toast of " The P . M . and Officers" followed , and having' been duly honoured and responded to by each officer , trie Tyler ' s toast brought a very pleasant and successful meeting to a close . The toasts were interspersed with songs rendered in capital style by thc W . M . and several brethren .

Several emergency meetings have been held since the consecration in April last , for the purpose of initiating members , and at thc last emergency meeting , held on the Sth inst ., Bros . Bro . VV . IT .
