Although the Past Masters of a lodge were sometimes irreverently called "the bench of old ladies , " in his opinion that bench constituted the strength and very
backbone of the lodge , and if the aspirations which actuated those who were working up for the chair ceased to actuate those who had passed it , yet their zeal for the welfare of their lodge was only increased by the distinction they had gained in it . A very pleasant and harmonious evening was brought to a close at an early hour .

"The Prince of Wales , G . M . of England , the Princess of Wales , and the rest of the Royal Family , and "The R . W . Bro . G . S . Tudor , P . G . M . of Staffordshire , " were honoured . Bro . Greatbach proposed " The Health of Bro . Foster Gough , D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . G . Officers , Present and Past , " and the toast was well received . Bro . Stringer proposed " The Health of Bro . Bromley ,
W . M ., " who , he said , was most attentive to his duties and efficient in the discharge of them . He alluded to the kindness which Bro . Bromley had shown to the lodge and those nearest and dearest to the members by inviting them in the summer to that proverbially hospitable place , The Mount , mentioning also the kindness of Mrs . Bromley on that as well as on the present occasion , the splendid dessert on the table having been supplied by her . The toast was drunk
with great heartiness . Bro . Bromley appropriately acknowledged the compliment . Bro . Bickley then rose and asked the lodge to accept from him a small offering in commemoration of the jubilee of the lodge . While enjoying the splendid hospitality of The Mount , he saw the roll of Past Masters which was presented to the lodge by Bros . Taylor and Tunnicliffe ,
and he remembered during the twenty years that he had belonged to the lodge there had always been one central figure there , and that was Bro . Hales . He thought it would not be inappropriate to have the portrait of Bro . Hales painted and placed in the lodge . He trusted that they would accept the portrait , and that while having it they would have Bro . Hales ' s personal presence amongst them for many years to come . The remarks of Bro .
Bickley were received with applause . The portrait , a handsome oil painting representing Bro . Hales in his Masonic regalia , was then uncovered by Bro . F . Ryles , the artist . It is an admirable likeness and an excellent work of art , and is enclosed in a handsome frame . The Worshipful Master accepted the portrait in the name of the lodge , and spoke warmly in commendation of Bro . Hales ' s devotion to the interests of the lodge . He
concluded by proposing Bro . Hales's health , which was drunk with enthusiasm . Bro . Hales , in responding , said Freemasonry had been a hobby with him . Ever since his initiation he had been impressed with the conviction that everything that was honourable was embodied in Freemasonry , and the members of the Fraternity with whom he had been associated had been straightforward and upright men . The first part of
the time he was a Mason he found that many joined the Fraternity but did not remain members of the lodge for any length of time . For some years past , however , men had joined who were determined to do all they could for the Institution . He for one had no intention to abandon the lodge , but should continue to do the best he could for it as long as the members had confidence in him . Bro . Humphries proposed "Success to the Menturia
Lodge . " Bro . James Rodgers , in a neat speech , acknowledged the toast . Bro . T . Taylor proposed "The Health of Bro . Bickley . " He observed that there were 50 names on the list of Past Masters , of whom 24 were still alive and doing well , 15 of them being subscribing members . Amongst them there was no one held in higher esteem than Bro . Bickley . The
toast was heartily received . Bro . Bickley responded in suitable terms . Bro . Julian responded for "The Visiting Brethren , " whose health was proposed by Bro . Brandon . "The Health of the I . P . M . " having been proposed by Bro . Pitchford , and acknowledged by Bro . Stringer , Bro . Hamshaw submitted the toast of "The Masonic Charities , " with regard to which he said the Menturia Lodge occupied

the somewhat enviable position of subscribing a larger sum annually than any other lodge in the province . The Masons of the country subscribed the munificent sum of , £ 50 , 000 a year for the three noble Charities in London , or £ 16 , 000 or £ 17 , 000 for each , which was far in excess of the money raised for any institutions having similar objects in the kingdom . He stated statistics to show that the income for
the support of the Masonic Charities was a progressive one , and that of the £ 50 , 000 subscribed this year , no less than £ 646 5 s . 6 d . had been contributed bv Staffordshire . The toast having been drunk with Masonic honours , Bro . Humphries , Secretary to the Masonic Charitable Association of Staffordshire , responded , speaking of the marked success of that institution , by which a vast amount of good was done under the eyes of the members , independently of
the three Institutions in London . Bro . Crapper proposed " The Officers of the Lodge , " and his remarks were well received . Bro . E . B . Jackson responded . — The Tyler ' s toast followed .
