previous meeting read and confirmed , and a ballot was taken for Mr . James Pike , a candidate for initiation , and proved unanimously in his favour . Bros . A . J . Read and G . VV . Lock were raised to thc Sublime Degree of Master Master , and Bro . Alfred H . Lock passed to thc degree of Fellow Craft . Mr . James Pike was then duly initiated in
a very able and masterly manner by the VV . M ., Bro . Muggcridgc delivering the ancient charge to the newly-initiated brother . Bro . Muggcridgc then read a circular from Bro . Hedges , the Secretary for the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and made an appeal to thc members of the lodge for one of thc brethren to serve as Steward at the festival of that Institution in May , but was unsuccessful in his
application . 'The lodge was then closed , and thc brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , and after spending a very pleasant evening , much pleased with thc admirable and impressive manner in which thc VV . M . had discharged thc duties of his important office , separated at an early hour .
ROYAL SAVOY LODGE ( No . 1 744 ) . —This popular lodge met at Freemasons' Hall for thc installation of the VV . M . for thc coming year and for other business , on the 22 nd ult ., when there was a very large gathering of members of thc lodge and a very considerable number of visitors . Unfortunatel y Bro . J . T . Hyland . thc W . M . of thc lodge , was prevented , by illness from being present to perform
thc ceremony of installation himself , and Bro . las . Willing , jun ., who was looked to as a substitute , was also unable to be present . The difficulty was got over by an application to Bro . James Terry , thc Secretary of the Masonic Bcncvoleht Institution , who unhesitatingly , although at some inconvenience , at once responded to thc call and opened thc lodge at the appointed hour , and performed thc ceremony

'There is no need to say that the work was admirabl y done , as thc whole Craft arc well acquainted with the skill with which Bro . Terry can perform any of thc ceremonies at a moment's notice . Stiles rose and said before proceeding further he had a pressing duty to
perform . At thc last moment he had received a telegram from thc VV . M . stating his inability , on account of illness , to attend thc meeting , and he at once telcgraphedto Bro . Willing to come and perform thc installation ceremony , but he was also unable to attend . At thc very last moment he had applied to Bro . 'Terry , P . P . G . S . W . Norths and Hunts , and also a Past Grand Officer of the Province of Herts , who
was , besides , the consecrating officer of this lodge , and he at less than five minutes' notice , with his well known good nature , had most readily consented to act as Installing Officer , although he had an engagement elsewhere at nearly thc same hour ; and he ( Bro . Stiles ) therefore felt that so generous an act should be recorded on the minutes of the lodge and he therefore proposed with thc greatest
pleasure and gratitude that the best thanks of the lodge be tendered to Bro . Terry and recorded on thc minutes . Bro . Terry in thanking the lodge for so recognising his services saidthat it gave him much pleasure to give all thc assistance in his power in a moment of difficulty . One hundred and twenty-two brethren , including 54 visitors , sat down to dinner , and when the cloth . had been withdrawn the customary loyal . and Masonic toasts were given with the greatest possible brevity by the presiding VV . neither the I . P . M . nor Bro . Willing wereprcsent to perform that duty , but be was sure that it was by no fault of their own that they were absent , because they held the Master in such high esteem that they would have been present il possible . No brother could be more popular than Bro , Stiles . The very name of Bro . VV . M . Stiles was enough to make anyone smile , without any joke about thc initials , because his face was so familiar , and he was so well known as a genial friend that to sec him in that chair was one of most gratifying of sights .
Bro . Stiles in replying said that to say he was not proud of the kind way in which his health had been received would be wrong . He appreciated very much the way in which it had been proposed and the hearty manner in which it had been received . As a founder of the lodge , ol which he had been Secretary from the commencement , he had worked very hard in conjunction with Bro . Willing in making it a success . He thought that with Bro . Willing as Master , and himself as Secretary , they had made a success of the Royal Savoy Lodge . Bro . Willing had said that
they were clever enough to do without him , but the real cause of his absence was important business out of London . For himself he would say that he was proud of accepting thc position of Master of a lodge consisting of 120 members ; thc dignity of thc position he thoroughly acknowledged . His best services were at their disposal and at thc end of his year of office he hoped the brethren would be able to part with him in the same kind manner as that in which they had received him .

'The business of the evening was light , and included a short discussion as to the desirability of providing a better organ , thc result of which was that a Committee was appointed to consider the matter and report thereon . Votes of condolence were passed with the widow and family of Bro . Francis Rawling , who expired in his fifty-sixth year earl y that morning , and with the relatives of Bro . VV . Whitehead , who died a few days ago at his residence , Holgatc , near York . In consequence of these losses the lodge will remain in mourning three months .

M . for thc coming year and for other business , on the 22 nd ult ., when there was a very large gathering of members of thc lodge and a very considerable number of visitors . Unfortunatel y Bro . J . T . Hyland . thc W . M . of thc lodge , was prevented , by illness from being present to perform
thc ceremony of installation himself , and Bro . las . Willing , jun ., who was looked to as a substitute , was also unable to be present . The difficulty was got over by an application to Bro . James Terry , thc Secretary of the Masonic Bcncvoleht Institution , who unhesitatingly , although at some inconvenience , at once responded to thc call and opened thc lodge at the appointed hour , and performed thc ceremony

perform . At thc last moment he had received a telegram from thc VV . M . stating his inability , on account of illness , to attend thc meeting , and he at once telcgraphedto Bro . Willing to come and perform thc installation ceremony , but he was also unable to attend . At thc very last moment he had applied to Bro . 'Terry , P . P . G . S . W . Norths and Hunts , and also a Past Grand Officer of the Province of Herts , who
was , besides , the consecrating officer of this lodge , and he at less than five minutes' notice , with his well known good nature , had most readily consented to act as Installing Officer , although he had an engagement elsewhere at nearly thc same hour ; and he ( Bro . Stiles ) therefore felt that so generous an act should be recorded on the minutes of the lodge and he therefore proposed with thc greatest
pleasure and gratitude that the best thanks of the lodge be tendered to Bro . Terry and recorded on thc minutes . Bro . Terry in thanking the lodge for so recognising his services saidthat it gave him much pleasure to give all thc assistance in his power in a moment of difficulty . The members of the lodge and their guests subsequently dined tog-ether in the large hall in the adjoining building .
One hundred and twenty-two brethren , including 54 visitors , sat down to dinner , and when the cloth . had been withdrawn the customary loyal . and Masonic toasts were given with the greatest possible brevity by the presiding VV . M ., and were received with the enthusiasm usual amongst loyal Masons . " The Health of the VV . M . " was proposed by Bro . John Mason , P . P . G . S . D . Middx ., who said he was sorry that

neither the I . P . M . nor Bro . Willing wereprcsent to perform that duty , but be was sure that it was by no fault of their own that they were absent , because they held the Master in such high esteem that they would have been present il possible . No brother could be more popular than Bro , Stiles . The very name of Bro . VV . M . Stiles was enough to make anyone smile , without any joke about thc initials , because his face was so familiar , and he was so well known as a genial friend that to sec him in that chair was one of most gratifying of sights .
Bro . Stiles in replying said that to say he was not proud of the kind way in which his health had been received would be wrong . He appreciated very much the way in which it had been proposed and the hearty manner in which it had been received . As a founder of the lodge , ol which he had been Secretary from the commencement , he had worked very hard in conjunction with Bro . Willing in making it a success . He thought that with Bro . Willing as Master , and himself as Secretary , they had made a success of the Royal Savoy Lodge . Bro . Willing had said that
they were clever enough to do without him , but the real cause of his absence was important business out of London . For himself he would say that he was proud of accepting thc position of Master of a lodge consisting of 120 members ; thc dignity of thc position he thoroughly acknowledged . His best services were at their disposal and at thc end of his year of office he hoped the brethren would be able to part with him in the same kind manner as that in which they had received him .

'The business of the evening was light , and included a short discussion as to the desirability of providing a better organ , thc result of which was that a Committee was appointed to consider the matter and report thereon . Votes of condolence were passed with the widow and family of Bro . Francis Rawling , who expired in his fifty-sixth year earl y that morning , and with the relatives of Bro . VV . Whitehead , who died a few days ago at his residence , Holgatc , near York . In consequence of these losses the lodge will remain in mourning three months .
