ROYAL ALFRED LODGE ( No . 780 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held on Friday , the 24 th ult ., at the Star and Garter Hotel , Kew Bridge , Bro . B . E . Blasby , W . M ., occupying the chair . There were also present Bros . VV . Maton , S . W ., W . M . elect ; C . Coombes , J . W . ; W . Eydmann , Treas . ; Wm . Hilton , Sec ; G . A . Littlewood , P . M . ; C . installed Bro . Maton as his successor , the addresses having been delivered and the usual saluting performed . After the ordinary business had been transacted , the brethren adjour . ie " ' o ihi banquet , provided by Bro . J . Brill . After the removal of the cloth , The Worshipful Master gave the toast of "The Queen and the Craft . " The Worshipful Master , in giving the toast of "The
M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " stated that under his patronage the Order was fast increasing , and he hjped would continue to increase and prosper . The toast of " The Pro G . M . and Deputy G . M . " was then given , and referred to , in a few well-chosen remarks , as hard-working Masons , doing their best , under the guidance of the M . W . G . M ., for the good of Masonry generally .
Bro . Blasby , I . P . M . then gave the toast of "The VV . M ., Bro . Maton , " which was most cordially received , remarking that he had had the pleasure of witnessing his initiation and his progress through the various offices , and was now very pleased to have had the privilege of installing him W . M . of the Royal Alfred Lodge . In responding , the W . M . thanked the brethren for the extremely hearty manner in which they had received the
toast , and hoped that during his year of office he should receive the cordial co operation of the officers and brethren in doing his utmost for the good of Freemasonry in general , and the Royal Alfred Lodge in particular . In submitting the toast of "The Installing Master , " the VV . M . referred in flattering terms to the manner in which the whole of the work had been done by Bro . Blasby , and in presenting him with a very handsome jewel , wished
that he might live for many years to wear it . The toasts of " The Various Officers " were submitted , and were a'l well received , as was that of " The Initiate . " "The Visitors , " of whom a large number were present , was then given by the VV . M ., and responded to by Bros . Graham , G . Gardner , and Gsorge Thomas , and with the Tyler ' s toast a very enjoyable evening was brought to a
successful termination , and the W . M . is to be congratulated upon having such a goodly number of workers to support him . During the evening songs were given by Bros . Gardner , Thomas , and others , under the musical direction of Bro . G . S . Graham , who is a host in himself where music or musical sketches are the order of the day .
MERCHANT NAVY LODGE ( No . 781 )'—A special emergency meeting , in advance of the usual opening meeting for this month , was convened for Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., and a goodly muster of the brethren rallied round the esteemed W . M ., Bro . T . Gaisford , at the Silver Tavern , Burdett-road . This lodge , by reason of its riverain position , fully maintains that connection with our merchantile marine which its name implies , and for which object
the warrant for its constitution was granted nearly 30 years ago , and the meeting under notice was called to initiate Mr . Geo . E . Neale into the Order . The other business on the agenda paper included the conferring of the Second Degree upon Bros . Scage and Crabtree , and the Third Degree upon Bro . S . Hayward . The W . M . was admirably supported by Bios . F . Robinson , P . M . ; J . H . Pringle , P . M . ; A . Scheerbohm , P . M . ; C . Breden , P . M ., Sec . ;
B . J . Rawe , P . M . ; Daniels , P . M . ; Outd , P . M . ; and Bros . H . Cotter , P . M . 5545 Kcnnelt , P . M . 1716 ; Stephens , P . M . 1623 , & c ., as visitors , and numerous brethren . Bro . Pringle assisted the W . M . in the third ceremony , and after lodge business a capital cold collation was served by mine host , and the toasts , commendably abridged , disposed of ,
afforded opportunity for some capital singing , a truly enjoyable hour being socially passed . Among the executants were Bros . Pringle , Robinson , Timson , Cotter , Breden , Neale , Gaisford , and others , Bro . Rawe further delighting the brethren with a forcible recitation from " William Tell . "

This being the opening meeting the brethren exchanged greetings upon re-assembling after the summer holiday The lodge work included conferring the Third Degree upon Bro . Edward Noyes , and the admission , after ballot , and initiation of Mr . H . Clarke into the Order . The ceremonies were impressively rendered , the charge to the initiate being given in full with great effect . Proposition was made of a candidate for admission , and other lodge business transacted , and the lodge was closed at an early hour .
SPHINX LODGE ( No . 1329 ) . —On Saturday , the iSth ult ., the brethren of this lodge assembled at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , for the transaction of important business . The lodge having been opened in the usual manner by the VV . M ., the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and conlirmed . The VV . M . then proceeded to pass Bros . VV . E . and H . M . Crisp , which ceremony was , as usual , most efficiently performed . The brethren next proceeded
to elect a W . M . tor the ensuing year , Bro . Voisey being elected to that most important position unanimously . Bro . J . C . Reynolds wa « , for the 16 th time , re-elected as Treasurer of the lodge , and Bro . Harrison—a most popular officer—as Tyler . An Audit Committee was also appointed , and Bro . J . J . Brinton proposed , and Bro . J . Sugden seconded , the proposition that a jewel and collar be presented to the VV . M ., Bro . Marsdtn , for his services , which he had so ably carried out during his term of office , which was carried with acclamation .
After other matters had been settled , the lodge was closed . The W . M . a terwards invited those present to dine with him . Bro . Venables had provided a most enjoyable repast in a room near the Temple . On the removal of the cloth , the VV . M . proposed "The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Grand Master , "and "The Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers
, Present and Past , " all of which toasts were introduced by appropriate remarks , and were also duly honoured . Some most excellent vocalisation was interspersed with these toasts , which greatly enlivened the proceedings . The remaining toasts being given and responded to , the Tyler's toast brought a very successful meeting to a close .
CORINTHIAN LODGE ( No . 1382 ) . —A capital gathering was held on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., at the George Hotel , Millwall Dock , E ., under the chairmanship of Bro . John VV . Morrison , VV . M ., who was supported by a more than ordinarily numerous array of officers , brethren , and , as usual , visiting brethren . The business consisted of a large amount of work , including the initiation of Messrs .
Banks , h . Brindley , and Chatfield ; the conferring of the Second Degree upon Bros . Campbell and Wild , and the Third Degree upon Bros . Rose , Nicholson , and Greatorex . Bro . Grieves , 7 S 1 , was courteously advanced to the Third Degree , so that the . W . M . and P . M . ' s , who ably assisted , had plenty of work . After lodge a fine banquet was served by Host Bro . VV . Clark , and the large number of brethren then assembled
fully taxed the resources of the recently-enlarged hall , which presented a p leasing spectacle whilst the banquet was proceeding . At its conclusion , the usual toasts were honoured with point and brevity . The VV . M . then asked Bro . Oakley to introduce the next pleasing duty , and that brother explained that it had been long felt that the constant and obliging services rendered
to the lodge by Bro . Host Clark should be recognised in some material form , and a list—to which subscriptions had rapidly and cheerfully fallen in—was started , and thc outcome was in evidence that evening in a handsomely illuminated vellum inscription , and a handsome piece of plate , which the brethren wished the VV . M . to hand to the worthy host , who would not value it the less because it was coupled
with the name of his wife , their esteemed hostess . The W . M . thereupon handed the large piece of silver plate , weighing 30 ozs ., and the framed vellum address , to Bro . VV . Clark , expressing the hope that he and his wife would live for many years to enjoy the respect and esteem of the members of the Corinthian Lodge . The following was engraved upon ( he presentation plate :
"Presented to Bro . William Clark and Mrs . Elizabeth Clark , our worthy Host and Hostess , as a token of respect and esteem , from the members of the Corinthian Lodge , No . 13 S 2 . September , 18 S 6 . " Bro . Clark feelingly responded , and the remainder of the evening was happily passed , the usual toasts being honoured , and some capital music adding much to the enjoyment of the hour .
LOYALTY LODGE ( No . 1607 ) . —This flourishlodge met on Saturday , the 18 th ult ., at the London Tavern , Fenchurch-street , at whicli establishment the lodge has settled down since its migration from the Alexandra Palace . A special feature of the meeting was that before the delivery of the three grand charges a brother of the newly-installed VV . M . was successfully balloted for and was initiated , and had the privilege of hearing those charges delivered in all their beauty by the Installing
Master . The VV . M . having signified his intention to represent the lodge at the next . Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , the brethren cordially accepted those services , and voted £ 10 ios . in support of his list , the brethren also handsomely supplementing the grant later on . All business at an end , banquet was disposed of , and a brilliant set of speeches were delivered in connection with the usual toast list , the principal feature of which were the
replies of the outgoing VV . M . on receiving a handsome P . M . jewel—the gift of the lodge—and the toasting of "Ihe Initiate" by the W . M ., in the person of his own brother . Bro . J . Terry , Sec . R . M . B . L , also made one of his effective appeals for support to the Masonic Charities ; and a splendid programme of music was ably rendered—always a special feature at 1607 installations—by the musical brethren engaged under the direction of Bro . J . A . Brown , the whole affording a high intellectual treat .
WEST SMITHFIELD LODGE ( No . 1623 ) . — A meeting of theabove lodge was holden atthe Freemasons ' Hall , Great Queen-street , W . C , on the 16 th ult . Thc lodge was opened in due form by the W . M ., Bro . J . J . Howes , assisted by his Wardens—Bros . Greenwood , S . W ., and Brickdale , J . VV . —and members present . The minutes of previous lodge meeting were read and confirmed , and the three Degrees worked by the VV . M . Bro . Richardson ,
1185 , by the desire of his VV . M ., was raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M . Bros . B . E . Obergethman and E . O . Balte were passed , and a ballot was then successfully taken for Messrs . C . Hoare and A . Langman , who , together with Mr . A . Arnstein , previously balloted for , were regularly initiated into the mysteries , the ceremony being very ably worked by the W . M . A Board of Installed Masters , of which a good number were present , having been formed ,
the W . M . ably installed his successor , Bro . R . B . Greenwood , to the great satisfaction of the P . M . ' s , who duly saluted the new Master in proper order , and congratulated him . The VV . the I . P . M . splendidly delivered the addresses , to the immense satisfaction of all present . The Auditors then gave in their report . After giving ten guineas each to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and other gifts and clearing the lodge of all debt , the general account showed a balance of £ 39 7 s . iod ., which was considered satisfactory , and a vote of thanks was unanimously adopted , and the same entered
on the minutes , to Bros . A . W . Price , F . H . Linnett , and and S . C . H . Rumball , who stated the books were so well kept all vouchers , & c , at hand that it made the audit a pleasure , and begged to thank the lodge for their vote of thanks . The VV . M . informed the brethren that he had then to discharge a most pleasing duty . Bro . E . Mallett , P . M ., who had held the office of Secretary for a number of years , the only remaining founder in the ) odge , had been obliged by pressure of other duties to relinquish his office in the lodge , and
himself and his brethren could not allow that worthy brother to retire without some acknowledgment of their esteem towards him . The lodge had unanimously voted a testimonial , together with a purse of gold . He would ask Bro . Lardner , P . M ., Sec , to read the testimonial , which that brother did , as follows : "At a meeting of the lodge held at the Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street , W . M . of the Royal Alfred Lodge . In responding , the W . M . thanked the brethren for the extremely hearty manner in which they had received the
toast , and hoped that during his year of office he should receive the cordial co operation of the officers and brethren in doing his utmost for the good of Freemasonry in general , and the Royal Alfred Lodge in particular . In submitting the toast of "The Installing Master , " the VV . M . referred in flattering terms to the manner in which the whole of the work had been done by Bro . Blasby , and in presenting him with a very handsome jewel , wished
that he might live for many years to wear it . The toasts of " The Various Officers " were submitted , and were a'l well received , as was that of " The Initiate . " "The Visitors , " of whom a large number were present , was then given by the VV . M ., and responded to by Bros . Graham , G . Gardner , and Gsorge Thomas , and with the Tyler ' s toast a very enjoyable evening was brought to a
successful termination , and the W . M . is to be congratulated upon having such a goodly number of workers to support him . During the evening songs were given by Bros . Gardner , Thomas , and others , under the musical direction of Bro . G . S . Graham , who is a host in himself where music or musical sketches are the order of the day .
MERCHANT NAVY LODGE ( No . 781 )'—A special emergency meeting , in advance of the usual opening meeting for this month , was convened for Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., and a goodly muster of the brethren rallied round the esteemed W . M ., Bro . T . Gaisford , at the Silver Tavern , Burdett-road . This lodge , by reason of its riverain position , fully maintains that connection with our merchantile marine which its name implies , and for which object
the warrant for its constitution was granted nearly 30 years ago , and the meeting under notice was called to initiate Mr . Geo . E . Neale into the Order . The other business on the agenda paper included the conferring of the Second Degree upon Bros . Scage and Crabtree , and the Third Degree upon Bro . S . Hayward . The W . M . was admirably supported by Bios . F . Robinson , P . M . ; J . H . Pringle , P . M . ; A . Scheerbohm , P . M . ; C . Breden , P . M ., Sec . ;

afforded opportunity for some capital singing , a truly enjoyable hour being socially passed . Among the executants were Bros . This being the opening meeting the brethren exchanged greetings upon re-assembling after the summer holiday The lodge work included conferring the Third Degree upon Bro . Edward Noyes , and the admission , after ballot , and initiation of Mr . H . Clarke into the Order . The ceremonies were impressively rendered , the charge to the initiate being given in full with great effect . Proposition was made of a candidate for admission , and other lodge business transacted , and the lodge was closed at an early hour .

The lodge having been opened in the usual manner by the VV . M ., the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and conlirmed . The VV . M . then proceeded to pass Bros . VV . E . and H . M . Crisp , which ceremony was , as usual , most efficiently performed . The brethren next proceeded
to elect a W . M . tor the ensuing year , Bro . Voisey being elected to that most important position unanimously . Bro . J . C . Reynolds wa « , for the 16 th time , re-elected as Treasurer of the lodge , and Bro . Harrison—a most popular officer—as Tyler . An Audit Committee was also appointed , and Bro . J . J . Brinton proposed , and Bro . J . Sugden seconded , the proposition that a jewel and collar be presented to the VV . M ., Bro . Marsdtn , for his services , which he had so ably carried out during his term of office , which was carried with acclamation .
After other matters had been settled , the lodge was closed . The W . M . a terwards invited those present to dine with him . Bro . Venables had provided a most enjoyable repast in a room near the Temple . On the removal of the cloth , the VV . M . proposed "The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Grand Master , "and "The Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers
, Present and Past , " all of which toasts were introduced by appropriate remarks , and were also duly honoured . Some most excellent vocalisation was interspersed with these toasts , which greatly enlivened the proceedings . The remaining toasts being given and responded to , the Tyler's toast brought a very successful meeting to a close .
CORINTHIAN LODGE ( No . 1382 ) . —A capital gathering was held on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., at the George Hotel , Millwall Dock , E ., under the chairmanship of Bro . John VV . Morrison , VV . M ., who was supported by a more than ordinarily numerous array of officers , brethren , and , as usual , visiting brethren . The business consisted of a large amount of work , including the initiation of Messrs .
Banks , h . Brindley , and Chatfield ; the conferring of the Second Degree upon Bros . Campbell and Wild , and the Third Degree upon Bros . Rose , Nicholson , and Greatorex . Bro . Grieves , 7 S 1 , was courteously advanced to the Third Degree , so that the . W . M . and P . M . ' s , who ably assisted , had plenty of work . After lodge a fine banquet was served by Host Bro . VV . Clark , and the large number of brethren then assembled
fully taxed the resources of the recently-enlarged hall , which presented a p leasing spectacle whilst the banquet was proceeding . At its conclusion , the usual toasts were honoured with point and brevity . The VV . M . then asked Bro . Oakley to introduce the next pleasing duty , and that brother explained that it had been long felt that the constant and obliging services rendered
to the lodge by Bro . Host Clark should be recognised in some material form , and a list—to which subscriptions had rapidly and cheerfully fallen in—was started , and thc outcome was in evidence that evening in a handsomely illuminated vellum inscription , and a handsome piece of plate , which the brethren wished the VV . M . to hand to the worthy host , who would not value it the less because it was coupled
with the name of his wife , their esteemed hostess . The W . M . thereupon handed the large piece of silver plate , weighing 30 ozs ., and the framed vellum address , to Bro . VV . Clark , expressing the hope that he and his wife would live for many years to enjoy the respect and esteem of the members of the Corinthian Lodge . The following was engraved upon ( he presentation plate :
"Presented to Bro . William Clark and Mrs . Elizabeth Clark , our worthy Host and Hostess , as a token of respect and esteem , from the members of the Corinthian Lodge , No . 13 S 2 . September , 18 S 6 . " Bro . Clark feelingly responded , and the remainder of the evening was happily passed , the usual toasts being honoured , and some capital music adding much to the enjoyment of the hour .

Master . The VV . M . having signified his intention to represent the lodge at the next . Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , the brethren cordially accepted those services , and voted £ 10 ios . in support of his list , the brethren also handsomely supplementing the grant later on . All business at an end , banquet was disposed of , and a brilliant set of speeches were delivered in connection with the usual toast list , the principal feature of which were the
replies of the outgoing VV . M . on receiving a handsome P . M . jewel—the gift of the lodge—and the toasting of "Ihe Initiate" by the W . M ., in the person of his own brother . Bro . J . After giving ten guineas each to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , and other gifts and clearing the lodge of all debt , the general account showed a balance of £ 39 7 s . iod ., which was considered satisfactory , and a vote of thanks was unanimously adopted , and the same entered
on the minutes , to Bros . A . W . Price , F . H . Linnett , and and S . C . H . Rumball , who stated the books were so well kept all vouchers , & c , at hand that it made the audit a pleasure , and begged to thank the lodge for their vote of thanks . The VV . M . informed the brethren that he had then to discharge a most pleasing duty . Bro . E . Mallett , P . M ., who had held the office of Secretary for a number of years , the only remaining founder in the ) odge , had been obliged by pressure of other duties to relinquish his office in the lodge , and
himself and his brethren could not allow that worthy brother to retire without some acknowledgment of their esteem towards him . The lodge had unanimously voted a testimonial , together with a purse of gold . He would ask Bro . Lardner , P .
