The richness of the goldfields of the Transvaal has been so thoroughly demonstrated by the reports of the mining engineers sent out by the South African Syndicate , of which Lord Robert Montagu is the Chairman , that quite a flutter is being ^ created in the commercial world . The share list of the Syndicate was closed some weeks ago , and now a large and powerful company is , we learn ,
beineformed , under distinguished auspices , to take over the Syndicate business and carry out its objects . Some 2 , 000 , 000 acres in the Transvaal have been acquired , and speculators will , we doubt not , look forward with interest to the appearance of the prospectus of the new company , which , we believe , will be issued early in May . We observe that Mr . William Gipps Kent , of 1 ,
Furnivals Inn , eldest son of Bro . Frederick Kent , P . M . 177 , of No . g , Bucklersbury , is a candidate for the office of Assistant Clerkships at the Mansion House . Considering that Bro . Frederick Kent represented the Ward of Breadstreet for nearly 10 years in the Court of Common Council , and then onlyretired by reason of ill health , it would seem but natural that some consideration should be shown towards his
son , who was educated in the City of London School , and received the greater part of his legal education in his father ' s office , whom we remember as having conducted several important prosecutions on various occasions . It will be remembered that Bro . Kent as W . M . of the Domatic Lodge entertained the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London at a grand ball at the Cannon-street Hotel

1 he annual meeting- of the House of Charity was held yesterday at the institution's building , 1 , Greek-street , Soho , Mr . VV . H . Smith , M . P ., presiding . The 37 th annual report set forth , that generally the work of the charity was to prevent distress and misery , and its mode of doing this work was by affording relief , after investigation , to those who sought help . It was the only home in London gratuitously offered to such distressed persons as were of
good character , upon a recommendation from someone who knew them . Among the classes relieved were patients discharged from hospitals , orphan or friendless girls , widows , emigrants , and out-patients of hospitals . A guild had been formed for the better protection of young girls who entered the house , many of them , either by reason of their own incapacity , their treatment by their employers , or from illhealth , being ur , able to keep their situations for any long period . Receiving but small and
wages , accordingly prevented from saving money , they found tVm ^ elves on their discharge once more face to face with the world , inasmuch as they had only poor homes , and perhaps bad ones . Many also were girls from the rountry without friends in London or elsewhere . 502 persons were admitted to the benefits of the charity in the past year . Ihe I ' rimate had a-reed to succeed his predecessor as pair . m "f ihe institution . The Chairman in moving the
, adoption of the report , urged that the claim of the charity was that it stimulated self-reliance and self-help . It did not undertake to provide for persons for the rest of their lives , but afforded them protection and help when they needed and deserved it , until they were enabled to obtain employment and become respectable members of society . 1 he Krv .
1 he Krv . I' . J . Ponsonb y seconded the motion , which was ad-ipted neni . con .
