brctiren had assembled in the lodge room , the M . W . P . G . M . entered , attended bv his officers according to order . The M . W . P . G . M . and VV . Dep . P . G . M . were then severally saluted , after which the lodge was duly opened wit ' i solemn prayer . The PROV . G . SECRETARY then proceeded to read thc warrant which had been granted by Grand Lodge for the formation of the new Unity Lodge .
T 1 . M . W . P . G . M . next delivered an oration , after which the P . G . Chaplain offered up a prayer . The ceremony of consecration was then proceeded with , and concluded by a prayer from the P . G . Chaplain . 'The lodge was lowered to thc Second Degree , when the W . M . elect . Bro . J . E . Piatt , was duly presented to the Insta'ling Mas'er , Bro . John Collinge , P . G . S . W ., and , with the customary formalities , was forthwith inducted into
the chair of K . S . The Board of Installed Masters was presided over by Bro . I .. II . Hollingworth . VV ! : cn the M . M . ' swere re-admitted the pro-lamation was made to tjjem that Bro . J . E . Piatt's installation as W . M . of the Unity Lodge , No . iSfi . , was i : n fait accompli , and the usual salutations were given . Bro . I . L . Page , P . G . Supt . of Wks ., next proceeded to invest the following brethren as officers for the ensuing
year : Bros . John Lees , S . W . ; William Mytton , 4 ( 17 , I . W . ; James Potter , P . M . 4 6 7 , Treas . ; Ralph Slater , P . M . 4 ( 7 , Sec . ; J . F . Tweedale , P . P . G . Reg ., S . CRAMPTON LEES , P . G . S . W ., the Wardens , and Bro . J COLLINGE , P . G . J . W ., the brethren . When the lodge had been lowered to the First Degree ,
the W . M . rose and proposed a vote of thanks to the M . W . P . G . M . for his kindness in coining amongst them that day to perform the consecration at great personal inconvenience . Bro . J . CROM . TON LEES seconded the proposal , which was carried with acclamation . An announcement was made that Bro . James Taylor
Austcrbcrry , P . M . 407 , had in the most generous manner presented to the Unity Lodge thirt y Masonic Hall shares . lt is needless to say that the announcement gave great satisfaction to all the Oldham brethren , to whom the worthy donor is well known , and who has on a previous occasion this year evinced his generous spirit and his love of Masonry by presenting the 'Tudor Lodge with a very handsome embroidered banner .
"Hearty good wishes having been expressed by the numerous visiting brethren , the new , and we fervently hope prosperous , lodge was closed in peace and harmony and with solemn prayer at 3 . 45 . Great praise is due to all concerned for the manner in which the entire arrangements were carried out . The musical portion of the proceedings was well and ably sustained by Bros . William and Nathaniel Dumville , Mark
Stafford , and Hudson Lister , whilst we doubt very much whether a more able pianist than Bro . Joseph " Clafton proved himself could be found . A banquet was afterwards partaken of in the dining ball , and gave every satisfaction . As soon as grace after meat , " For these and all Thy mercies , Lord , " had been sung , the toast list was proceeded with . In response to the toast of his health Bro . J . E . PI . ATT ,
the W . M ., remarked that the position he had been elected to fill that day was a post of great honour . He could not help feeling that he was very young in Masonry , and certainly not so experienced as many he saw around him , but as many were aware he had attained his position under exceptional circumstances , in fact had found a loophole and
crept through it . He also felt proud to find himself honoured by the distinguished presence of the M . W . P . G . M ., anel so many wearers of the purple and gold . He thanked all those brethren who had at great inconvenience worked so zealously for the success of the meeting and carried out the arrangements so satisfactorily on this to him memorable
occasion . Several other toasts were proposed and responded to , and the brethren , we understand , did not separate until 10 . 30 p . m . 'The musical programme , of a varied and entertaining character , was gone through by the brethren before mentioned , giving entire satisfaction .

COMMUNIQUE .
The following is a translation from the Chainc d'Union of July , pp . 1 S 7 , iSS , under the heading '" Attacks against F re-masonry , " of a most painful example oi mendacious intolerance . " The Religious Week of the town and diocese of Versailles , No . qS , June 20 th , 1 SS 0 , Risuni teneatis amici . lt
is hardl y to be believed that it would be possible to find in a so-called religious journal so many foolish statements and such gross absurdities . But read . ' Diabolical' intervention in our epoch . 'The strange recital which we reproduce is authentic , for before publishing it , says La Semainc d < Grenoble , we wished to know ancl possess all proofs of it . Father Jandel has himself related it to several witnesses ,
whose depositions are in our hands . This personal intervention of Satan in the midst of the Masonic lodges is not , moreover , an isolated fact . The religious papers and Christian papers have frequently' asserted it . " Particularly at Lyons this diabolic action has frequently made itself felt , and that town is still to-day the theatre of infernal apparitions and frightful scenes , where the most
terrible sacrileges are committed , and where the holy consecrated Host is the object of awful profanation . Father Jandel , a Dominican , preaching at Lyons , was led , b y an interior movement , to teach the faithful the virtue of thc sign of the cross . He did not resist this emotion , but preached . As he left the cathedral he was joined
by a man , who said to him , 'Sir , do you believe what you have just been teaching ?' '" If I did not believe it I should not teach it , ' he replied ; ' 1 only teach what I believe . The virtue of the sign of the cross is acknowledged b y the Church . I hold for certain the virtue of the sign of the cross . '
Communique.
"' Indeed , ' replied his interlocutor , astonished , 'do you believe in what you say ? 1 am a Freemason , and I do not believe in it , but as I am profoundly surprised by what you have told us , I am here to propose to you to put to the proof the sign of the cross . Every evening we meet in a certain street at a certain number . The demon comes himself to preside over our meeting . Come this evening with me . We will remain at the door of the hall . You
make the stgn of the cross upon the assembly , and I shall see at once if what you have said be true . ' ' •'' I believe in the virtue of the sign of the cross , ' added Father Jandel , 'but I cannot , without having thought over it , deliberately put my faith to the proof . Give me three days to reflect . ' " ' Whenever you wish to prove your faith I am at your orders , ' replied the Freemason , and he gave his address to the Dominican .
" Father Jandel went at once to Monseigneur de Bonald , and asked him if he ought to accept this defiance in the name of the cross . " The Archbishop assembled several theologians , and discussed for some time with them the pour et contre of this proceeding . At last all agreed in the advice that Father Jandel ought to accept it . 'Go , my son , ' said to him Monseigneur Bonald , blessing him , ' and God be with you !'
" Forty-eight hours only remained to Father Jandel ; he passed them in prayer and mortification , and in recommending himself to the prayers of his friends , and , towards the evening , as had been settled , he went and knocked at the door of the Freemason . The Freemason awaited him . Nothing could reveal the religious person ; he was clothed in a I ay dress , only he had concealed a large cross under his dress .
" They leave together , and soon reach a great hall , furnished with a great deal of luxury , and so brilliantly lighted up that the eyes were dazed . They stop at the door . Little by Tittle the hall filled , and all the seats were occupied , when the Demon appeared . " His introducer said to him , ( the reverend father ) , ' Behold him ! ' and forthwith drawing from his breast the crucifix which was there hidden , the Rev . Father Jandel raised
it with his two hands , making over the gathering the sign of the cross . A thunderclap could not have had a less expected result , more sudden , more decisive . The lights were extinguished , the chairs fell upside down , one upon another , and all the company fled . " The Freemason carried off Father Jandel , and when they were a long way off , without being able to explain how they had escaped from the daikness and confusion ,
the adept of Satan fell at thc knees of the priest , and said , ' I believe ; pray for me , convert me , listen to me . ' " Father Jandel has not given the name of the Freemason , who conducted himself until the end of his life in a most edif y ing manner . " Is not this a startling story , kind readers ? We leave it , without further note or comment , to thc serious consideration of our educated , tolerant , and reverent Fraternity .
Masonic Service At Natal.
MASONIC SERVICE AT NATAL .
Thc annual Masonic service , under the auspices of the Natalia Lodge , took place at thc Drill Shed on June 27 th , the Sunday after St . John's Day . The brethren assembled at the Masonic Hall , and a procession was formed under Bro . Major Terry , W . M ., and proceeded to the Shed , the band of the 3- ( ioth Rifles leading the way and playing some stirring and appropriate airs . The service was , in the main ,
the ordinary Church of England Prayer , the Psalms chosen being Ps . _ . and Ps . exxxiii ., and the lessons 1 Kings vii ., v . 13-23 , and St . Matthew xiv ., to v . 13 . The hymns were No . 414 , " I _> 1 from the desert homes ; " No . 437 , " For all the Saints who from their labours rest ; " and No . 365 , " O , Lord of heaven and earth and sea . " There were a large number of the brethren and of the general public present . Among the former were W . Bros , Finnemore ,
P . M . of the Natalia Lodge ; Smith , P . M . of the Prince Alfred Lodge ; and many other leading members of the Craft . The service was impressively performed , the band accompanying the Psalms and hymns . The Rev . Mr . Ritchie preached a very eloquent sermon . He traced the antiquity of Masonry back to Solomon's Temple , and even to the Tower of Babel , on thc fall of which there were some who retained the true principles of religion in
their hearts , and formed themselves into a quasireligious society for the foundation of fenced cities . Alluding to thc obligation which Masons had imposed upon them as to their duties to God , to their neighbour and themselves , and to exert their talents as well to the glory of their Creator as to the welfare of their fellow men , he eulogised the manner in which they kept inviolate the secrets of their Order , and the benevolence which they practised , not only
to members of the !• ratcrnity , but to all their fellow beings . He urged that a knowledge even of the rudiments of Masonry adds to our responsibility as Christians ; and that Masonic life did not consist alone in the exercise of benevolent sympathy , in the security of our fraternal bonds , or in thc fidelity of the brethren to each and all their Masoinc
obligations , but in the heartfelt love for the Great Master , in reverence for all His Laws , in unshaken faith in His own dear Son , in blessed hope of the resurrection of eternal life , through the merits and atonement of the Saviour . At thc conclusion of the service a collection amounting to , fli 15 s . fid . was made for the benefit of the Masonic Benevolent Association .
Masonic Banquet At Maritzburg, Natal.
MASONIC BANQUET AT MARITZBURG , NATAL .
The members of the Skelmersdale Lodge held their annual installation banquet , at the Masonic Temple , on June 24 th . There was a very good attendance , about fifty brethren sitting down to table . The chair was taken by W . Bro . Ford , the new Master of the lodge , who had been
installed during the afternoon by W . Bro . Lawson , the retiring Master , W . Bro . Finnemore , and Bro . Major Terry . Among those present we noticed W . Bros . Smith , P . M . of Prince Alfred Lodge ; Stranach , P . M . Skelmersdale Lodge ; Bro . Colonel Steward , of the Natalia Lodge ; and others .
The banquet , which was provided by Mrs . Shepherd , was very good , and gave general satisfaction ; and after the viands had been dispatched , "The Queen and the Craft , " and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had been drunk , W . Bro . LAWSON proposed " The Health of the Newlyinstalled Master , " in very appropriate terms , saying it was

brctiren had assembled in the lodge room , the M . W . P . G . M . entered , attended bv his officers according to order . The M . W . P . G . M . and VV . Dep . P . G . M . were then severally saluted , after which the lodge was duly opened wit ' i solemn prayer . The PROV .
