Masonic Notes And Queries.
Masonic Notes and Queries .
TRAVELLING MASONS . Bro . Gould ' s interesting " note " in your last number raises one or two questions to which I will shortly allude in this useful column . Despite Mr . Street ' s high authorit y , we must not altogether give up the theory of " travelling Masons , " though wc may , and ought to , modify any exaggerated views on thc subject Unless all the early
chroniclers are wrong , the operative art in this country vvas kept up and carried on by a constant arrival of foreign workmen . No doubt in tbe fabric rolls , as a rule , the names of the Masons when given are English and local , with a slight admixture of foreigners , but the Master Mason , and probably others of the " lodge . " seem to have gone from South to North , and from North to South , as occasion served , or
work- demanded . Probably Mr . Street is right in this , that after a certain time each great monastery had its own " Logo Latomoruni " attached to it , and that Masons not of that lodge belonged to the lodge in a particular" limiM . " I am glad that Bro . Gould has so ably expressed his concurrence in the view I have long held , and often expressed in thc Freemason and elsewhere , that the authority of the " Parcntalia" is not great , and certainly not
Masonic Notes And Queries.
deserving of constant repetition , and that it rests , after all , on the " ut dicitur" of a very able non-Mason , Sir William Dugdale . Curiously the idea that there were " papal Bulls" to incorporate the Masons is supported by some German writers , though no Bull has yet turned up . Probably , if any such exists , it will be merely ad hoc to incorporate a fraternity , like Bishop Lucy ' s , at Winchester
ad cedifi candum ct rcparandam fnbricam ecclesia ; , & c . I cannot think that any papal Bull can be found recognizing the peculiar organization of the operative Guilds , though they may have found a home and protection amid the mysticism and love of henncticism of the monasteries . At the same time all early guilds seem to have royal authorization , and religious sanction . As regards thc " monks " as
" builders " Mr . Street ' s views also require limitation . Undoubtedly , too , if thc old chroniclers are trustworthy , in tbe early beginnings of ecclesiastical architecture , & c , many of the buildings were raised by the manual labour of the monks , directed by monk architects . "Cluny , " if I remember rightly , amid many others which might be cited , is an example of this . But it is very difficult , as Dallaway
pointed out years ago , to define in what consisted the actual limits of the monks' work . The chroniclers use such words as to make us believe more than probably they intended doing . There seems always to have been a difference between the "Magister Latomus , " the "Magister Cemcntariorum , " the "Maitre Macon , " the "Mayster-Maistcr Massoun , " and thc "Supervisor , " "Solutor , " " Magister , " " Operis , " who was generally a monk . THE EDITOR "KENNING ' S CYCLOP / EDIA . "
INIGO JONES MS . So far as may be gathered from announcements in the Freemason , the above title has been bestowed on the last found Masonic MS ., on the ground of its possessing a frontispiece by the celebrated Inigo Jones . As onewhodistrusts the common belief in the connection of this great architect with
our Masonic Craft , I should be glad if the accomplished author of the preface to "The Old Charges of British Freemasons" would specify rather more in detail thc evidence upon which he relies , to confirm the propriety of the designation which has been adopted ? R . F . GOULD .
THE HOLY MARTYRKS FOUR . In "Rome description et Souvenirs , par Francis Ney , " 3 rd edition , Paris , 1 S 75 , at p . 704 , the following appears : — "La solitaire eglise des ( Juattrn Coronati elevee sur un tertre en l'honneur de quatrc Soldats martyrs ? " The expression Soldier Martyrs I have not met previously with , the Coronati being ordinarily described as Christian engravers , and I should like to know whether cither Bros .
Ilughan or Woodford can throw any light on the quotation ? A second edition of "Old Charges of British Freemasons " is much needed . Upon the contents of these curious scrolls , together with gleanings from old " Fabric Rolls , " and the phraseology of certain " middle age " statutes , rests all that is known of Masonry in England , prior to thc initiation of Elias Ashmole , A . D . 1646 . R . F . GOULD .
To what does this allude ? MASONIC STUDENT . DIE JOVIS , ifith December , 1725 . A letter , dated the Sth inst ., from Brother George Payne , Junr . Grand Warden , directed inform to this Society , inclosing a Letter from tbeDuke of Richmond , Grand Master , dated likewise the Sth inst ., directed to the Presidt and
the rest of the brethren at the Apollo , in which he erroneousl y insists on and assumes to himself a pretended authority to call our Right VVorsbipfull and highly csteem'd Society to an account for making Masons irregularly , for which reasons , as well as for want of a due regard , just esteem , and omitting to adrcss himself in proper form to the Right VVorsbipfull and highly csteem'd Society . Mr . Augustus Harris will produce on Saturday next , at Drury Lane , on a very grand scale , a new ballet entitled " Lcs Sirens . " Nothing , wc understand , will be spared in any department to make it worthy of the boards on which it is to be produced , and of the reputation for spectacle the present able management has already acquired .
THE MOHAWK MINSTRELS . —The farewell benefit of Bro . R . G . ' 1 nomas , the courteous manager of this wellknown troupe of minstrels , took place on Wednesday evening , thc 2 . Sthult . A special performance bad been provided for the occasion , and though the attendance was considerable , we had fully expected that on this , the last occasion of this enterprising- and deservedly popular favourite
appearing in connection with the Mohawks , the ball would have been crowded to excess , and that sitting and listening to even the pleasant melodies they arc wont to favour the public with might have been attended with some slight discomfort through people being packed somewhat closel y together . This was not the case , however , and , under the circumstances , the attendance ought certainly to have been
larger , out of compliment to one who has done his duty to the public so loyally . The programme which , as we have said , was a special one , included two new songs ( by the talented beneficiary himself and several of Henry Russell's well-known songs , such as " Cheer , boys , cheer , " To the West , " "A Life on the Ocean Wave , " & c . Bro . Jas . Francis was , as usual , very funny in his comic song of
"Emancipation Day" and Harry Hunter ' s new military absurdity , "Victoria ' s Black Hussars . " Little Thomas and J . Kavanagh brought down ' the bouse by their inimitable rendering of the screaming absurdity "The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers . " Mr . J . Kavanagh sang "Man the Life Boat " splendidly . Bro . Egbert Roberts , a former Mohawk , known to Islingtonians ' by the pseudonym of F . Dolb y , received applause again and again repeated for
bis singing of "The Gambler ' s Wife . " Mr . VV . Freeman ' s banjo song , "'I'he Rustic Young Damsel , " experienced , as he always does , a hearty and sympathetic welcome . Messrs . Harry Hunter , as interlocutor , VV . Francis , corner man , C . Temple , VV . H . Florence , VV . Ray , and all who took part in thc entertainment , gave the greatest satisfaction ; not the least effective contributions being those of Mr . Arthur Lloyd , Mr . Fred Kent , "the Mad Artist , " Mr . Maclagan , & c .

Gould has so ably expressed his concurrence in the view I have long held , and often expressed in thc Freemason and elsewhere , that the authority of the " Parcntalia" is not great , and certainly not

deserving of constant repetition , and that it rests , after all , on the " ut dicitur" of a very able non-Mason , Sir William Dugdale .
" Ordered That tbe said Letters do lye on tbe Table .
