M . having opened the lodge in the First , Second , and Third Degrees , Bros . J . E . Smith and T . A . Berry
were raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason . Being then resumed in the Second Degree , Bros . H . Hodges , A . W . Hillier , G . White , and Pilkington were passed the Degree of Fellow Craft . Both ceremonies were most ably and impressively performed by the VV . M . ( Bro . VV . Burdett-Coutts ) , whose aim it has ever been to attain the highest excellence in Masonic work . The next business of the lodge was the election of
W . M . for the year ensuing , and before it was proceeded with a brother inquired whether the VV . M . would stand for another year , to which the W . M . replied that , while gratefully appreciating the honour , his engagements were becoming so numerous , and furthermore because he did not wish to stand in the way of young members of the lodge , who were naturally desirous of progressing in the Craft , he felt he must decline . Eventually the S . W ., Bro .
W . H . Baker , was elected unanimously . Ballot was then taken for the office of Treasurer , and Brc . J . C . F . Rogers was unanimously re-elected . The tTyler , Bro . Walkley , P . M ., was also unanimously re-elected , and an Audit Committee was appointed . It being the intention of the W . M . to serve as Steward at the Festival of the Masonic Boys' School , it was decided to vote ten guineas to his list from the lodge funds . It was also resolved to present a
P . M . ' s jewel , of the value of ten guineas , to the W . M ., Bro . Burdett-Coutts , on the motion of Bro . Spinks , I . P . M . The VV . M ., in acknowledging the compliment , said he should be glad to wear on his breast what he should always have in his heart , a remembrance of his year of office as VV . M . of this lodge . It was then resolved to invite the brethren of the City of Westminster Lodge , No . 15 C 3 , to the installation meeting
in May next as a return compliment . Bro . the Rev . R . J . Simpson , P . G . Chaplain , England , hon . member of the lodge , was unable to be present , but he sent a very handsome album which he requested the W . M . to present to the lodge in his name , expressing also his wish that the Baroness Burdett-Coutts would permit her Eortrait to be the first to grace the book , and that all the rethren would have their " counterfeit presentments "
placed therein . The VVorshipful Master stated that the Baroness had willingly consented to comply with the request , and he had placed his own opposite . The VVorshipful Master gave notice of motion that the services of the I . P . M ., Bro . Spink , be suitably acknowledged . Lodge having been closed , the brethren sat down to a dinner , admirably served by Messrs . Bertram and Roberts .

Jones he need only add that in addition to his high office in Grand Lodge he held a distinguished position in the City of London as originator and designer of some of the greatest improvements it had seen during the past
years . Bro . F . Davison , in acknowledging the toast , said he had never visited a lodge of the same age which had had such great prosperity . Bro . Horace Jones also responded in a humourous speech , and remarked that he was present at the consecration of the lodge , which though more numerous was certainly not more pleasant than the present meeting .
! The Immediate Past Master next proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " remarking that every brother who had attended their meeting must be convinced that they had a most admirable Master , thoroughly well versed in the ritual of ; Masonry , and full of courtesy and bonhomme and good fellowship in presiding at the festive board . He had seldom seen the working they had had ; that night equalled , and never excelled . In the first year of the lodge's existence the VV . M . had initiated 23 brethren , and had passed and

might so say , without deteriorating from its dignity , which had , by the warmth of the friendliness shown to him byjali the brethren , been to him like a chair by his own fireside , and because he could not help feeling that no more should he come forth from the lodge to take his seat in that chair , fresh from the privilege of having admitted new members into the grand brotherhood of Masonry , fresh from the privilege of having new proof of living and lasting strength of
this Abbey Lodge , the pride and the child of his hopes ; no more would become into that chair elated by the delivery of the inspiring ritual of their Order ; no more to listen to the flattering encomiums of his friend and brother , the I . P . M . ; no more would his ears and his heart be filled with the generous and enthusiastic , and , he was bold to say , the heartfelt receptions which he had always received at their hands , and which had lent such an indescribable
charm to the position which it had been his honour and pleasure to occupy . But his regret was assuaged by gratitude for their kindly treatment , for their loyalty to the lodge , and for the efforts one and all had made to achieve the great success it had attained . He felt that in its remarkable progress during the first year there was ample and rich earnest of promise for its future . He looked forward to this lodge attaining a great position among
metropolitan lodges , and in the great confraternity of Masons in this country . The W . M . next gave the toast of "The Visitors , " coupling with it the names of Bro . Colonel Lugard , of the Army and Navy Lodge , and Bro . Trevanion , P . P . G . W . Essex . Commenting upon the very proper omission of the military and naval toasts from Masonic gatherings , the VV . M . thought he should still not be out of sympathy with
the lodge in alluding to the great loss which the nation had sustained at Khartoum in the death of one who had been well described as the most soldierly saint and the most saintly soldier that the world had ever known ; and especially in a lodge which held its meetings so near the place where rested the ashes of so many saints and so many heroes . General Gordon was one of the grandest exemplifications of Masonry . [ At the name of General Gordon the
whole of the brethren rose simultaneously and with one accord . ] Yes , let it be upstanding , the VV . M . said , for the motion is a grand one . General Gordon was one of the grandest exemplifications of the great principles on which Masonry was founded—of Charity , in the greatest and highest sense of the word , of Charity and kindness to his fellow-creatures , of Fidelity'to the trustjreposed in him , and of cheerful obedience to the will of God . He felt he was
not out of agreement with his brethren in paying this tribute to the just and virtuous man to whom "death had no terror equal to the stain of falsehood and dishonour . " Many of those who had yielded up their lives on that distant soil had gone through the same ceremonies they had engaged in that night , and though many had not , they joined them altogether in paying to them a tribute from a Masonic lodge , a loyal , faithful , and God-fearing body .
The toast was responded to by Colonel Lugard and Bro . Trevanion . "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Spinks , " was next given from the chair , and suitably acknowledged . The VVorshipful Master then proposed the toastof "The Treasurer and Secretary , " thanking them for their energetic performances of their duties . Bro . Rogers , Treasurer , and Bro . J . E . Shand ,
'Secretary , appropriately responded . "The Officers of the Lodge" was next given by the W . M ., who thanked them cordially for their services , and expecially the W . M . elect , whom he termed the organiser of the lodge , itsjexistence being largely due to his exertions . Bro . W . H . Baker , S . W ., in responding , remarked that
it was very few lodges which could boast of numbering So members in their first year . Bro . Seager Hunt , J . W ., also responded . Before closing the proceedings , the W . M . announced that about £ 50 had been subscribed in the room towards his Steward ' s list for the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys' Festival .

After the ordinary preliminary business was transacted , Bro . G . Morgan , who was initiated at the previous meeting ,
was questioned , and having satisfactorily proved his proficiency in respect to the First Degree , was duly passed to the Degree of a F . C ., by the W . M ., in a very able and effective manner . The explanation of the second tracing board was afterwards , by desire of the VV . M ., given by the J . VV ., in a very excellent style . Two guineas were voted from the funds of the lodge in aid of the support of a child of a late brother who formerly for a short time was
a member of this lodge . Bro . W . E . Walker , P . M ., Treasurer , reported that he had attended the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution as a Steward , and , after giving a gratifying summary of what had been done , he expressed the pleasure he had experienced in being so privileged to contribute to the really magnificent success which had resulted from this year ' s efforts ; and he
tendered to the brethren his best thanks for the very kind assistance and support they had given him as their representative . After other and more private business pertaining to the lodge was disposed of , and another candidate for initiation had been proposed , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , and the pleasure of further brotherly intercourse , harmony , and love .

The lodge being opened in due form , Mr . A . McWilliams , having been duly elected , was initiated by the VV . M ., Bro . J . H . T . Evans . At the conclusion of the ceremony the lodge received in due form the D . P . G . M . of Somerset ,
Bro . K . C . Else , officers of Prov . Grand Lodge , and visitors of distinction . The gavel was then assumed by Bro . R . C . Else , who proceeded to install the W . M . elect , Bro . A . Thrall-Perkins , ioto the chair of K . S . for the third time . The ceremony was performed in Bro . Else ' s usual impressive manner . The VV . M . then invested his officers
for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . J . H . T . Evans , I . P . M . ; A . Law Wade , S . W . ; J . N . Knight , J . W . ; L . E . Newnham , P . M ., Treas . ; J . M . Atkins , P . M ., Sec ; W . The Worshipful Master proposed in eulogistic terms a vote of thanks to the Installing Master , remarking amongst other things , that to his untiring energy and his universal custom of attending all installations and annual festivals of the lodges in his province was due the feeling of
harmony that existed throughout the whole Province of Somerset . The vote was carried by acclamation , as was also a vote of thanks to Bro . S . G . Homfray , D . P . G . M . Monmouth , and a vote of thanks to the visitors for their attendance .
The W . M . then proceeded to the next business , which was the presentation of a P . M . ' s jewel to Bro . L . E . Newnham , P . M . 44 6 . Bro . Newnham having been conducted to the pedestal , the VV . M . said that it gave him very great pleasure to carry out the wishes of the lodge and to present Bro . Newnham with the jewel which had been unanimously voted to him at the last meeting of the lodge . Since the
day of his initiation Bro . Newnham had been unremitting in his attendances and attention to the proper working of the various offices in the lodge through which he had passed . Commencing as Secretary , Bro . Newnham had in turn filled the chairs of J . W ., S . VV ., and VV . M . After having filled the office of I . P . M . for one year , Bro . Newnham accepted the post of Secretary , which post he had continued
to hold for the past three years , thus showing an uninterrupted term of service to the lodge of eight years . In pinning the jewel on Bro . Newnham ' s breast , the VV . M . said that he wished him , in the name of the lodge , many years of health and happiness in which to continue his useful Masonic career . The jewel , which was * uppliid by Bro . George Kenning , was of gold and of artistic workmanship ; and on the
reverse was the following inscription : " Presented to VV . Bro . L . E . Newnham , P . M ., b y the brethren of the Benevolent Lodge , 44 6 , in appreciation of his services . March , 1 SS 5 . " When the applause with which he was greeted had subsided Bro . Newnham returned thanks , and said that to him Masonry had always been a labour of love . The hope of reward , which sweetens labour , had in his case been that
evening fulfilled , and he felt that , whatever he had been able to do for the lodge in times past , the handsome jewel , which had been presented to him in such flattering terms b y the W . M ., would prove an incentive to redoubled energies in the future . There being no further business before the lodge , it was closed in peace and harmony , and the brethren adjourned
to the Mitre Hotel , where an admirable banquet had been prepared by Mrs . Hill , the hostess , at which about 25 brethren sat down . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to , and the proceedings were much enlivened by songs from the VV . M ., Bros . Homfray , Knight , Davis , Bath , and others .

Ben Walker in an accomplished manner , showing he was thoroughly master of the instrument over which he presided . We trust the Lodge of Truth has many such pleasant evenings in store .
