When he took office he had great

He thanked them heartily for the handsome jewel that they had given him . Nothing uld ' bind him more closely to Masonry , but the jewel C P „ .. u -ilivavs remind him of his pleasant year of office in
the Mizpah . The toast of "The Visitors" was next given 1 v the VV . M . He said the } ' had a goodly muster , upwards of fifty . ** ¦ " 10 st Phasing list for a W . M . to read , lt proved that the Mizpah bore a good name . Bro . Jennings , he was . u ' re always did his best for them by providing a good dinner , and he trusted they would all take away with them nleasant memory of that evening . He hoped they would
come again , for it was seldom one visited a lodge without communicating and receiving pleasing impressions and instruction . Bro . Karl Bergmann , Past Master of the pilgrim Lodge , No . 23 S , was thc first to reply . He said that they were all aware that both thc P . M . and W . M . belonged to the German nationality , but they had always endeavoured to show that Masonry was cosmopolitan . He
was g lad to be present at such a successful gathering . Bro . ' Hamer , W . M . Great City Lodge , expressed the great pleasure he felt at visiting the Mizpah Lodge , and witnessing thc very excellent working they had seen that day , and he was glad to find Bro . J . R . Simpson once more among them . He thought the lodge had a prosperous future before it , and congratulated them on
possessing so excellent a Master . Bro . Whittaker also replied . He said , although surprijed at being called on , they could not have chosen a brother who felt more interest in the lodge . He had been a constant visitor , and derived much pleasure and instruction therefrom . The ceremonies had been worked in the most perfect manner , although the Present and Immediate Past Masters were not Englishmen ,
and had consequently laboured under disadvantages in rendering the English ritual . He would compliment the members on thc account read out of the Benevolent Fund , although the lodge contributed a considerable amount tc the great Masonic Charities . Bro . Brown and others also responded . The W . M . then proposed " The Health of the Past Masters . " It was , be said , a home toast—near and
dear to them ; they were but a young lodge , but they possessed four worthy Past Masters . Bro . Reed , as the first W . M ., had perpetuated the motto " Mcmor ct Fidelis . " Bro . Still was not very still in Masonry , but , on the contrary , most active . Bro . Medcalf was well known to all of them , too , for his Masonic ardour and urbanity . Bro . Nelson Reed , in reply , said it was at all times a pleasure to
him to return thanks as a Past Master of the Mizpah Lodge . They had honoured him by selecting him as first W . M ., and his duties had always been a work of love . Knowing , as he did , what good Masters had succeeded him he had reason to congratulate the lodge . They had g iven each year £ 10 to one of the charitable Institutions , and he had Bro . Terry ' s authority for saying that
if every lodge would only give £ 5 a year , thc work of the Secretaries would be rendered much easier , and a substantial addition to the subscription list would bc the result . It could not bc too often repeated that charity was the foundation of all Masonry . Bros . Still , Medcalf , and Bergmann , also responded . Other toasts followed , that of " The
Masonic Charities " responded to in eloquent terms by Bro . Terry , Secretary Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and "Oflicers , " concluding with the Tyler ' s toast . Wc should not omit to mention that thc proceedings were enlivened by some excellent singing by Bro . Edward Terry , and others . A solo on the zither was also charmingly rendered .
