G . Balmford , P . M ., was again re-alected Treasurer . Bro . C . G . Padel , P . M ., presented to the lodge the second and third volumes of Gould ' s " History of Masonry , " and was accorded a cordial vote of thanks . Bro .
J . S . Cumberland , P . M ., said that he should like to move that the lodge do send a letter of congratulation to Bro . Sir Moses Montefiore on his approaching 100 th birthday . They all knew the great value of Sir Moses ' s services to the country of his adoption , and he thought , as Masons , they should show their sense of this as well as their kindly feeling . He had spoken to Bro . Whytehead on the matter , which he would
and the latter had drafted a short address , ask him to read . Bro . Whytehead then read a letter of congratulation addressed to Sir Moses Montefiore , and suitable to be engrossed on parchment . After the usual preliminaries , the ceremoay of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Steed being the candidate . Bro . Walker , after having answered the necessary questions , and being entrusted , was duly passed to the degree of F . C . The lodge opened in the Third Degree , and Bro . Moss ,

G . ; Hunt , Cobham , March , Brindley , Folson , Walters , King , Balchin , and Collens . Lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the
previous nleeting were read and confirmed . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Balchin being the candidate . Bro . Brindley having answered the questions for the Second Degree , was duly entrusted . Lodge was opened on the square , and the ceremony of passing rehearsed , and the lodge was resumed to the First Degree . The First Section of the Lecture was worked by the brethren , questions by

Lilley , Z . ; Gillard , H . ; Webb , J . ; Frank , S . N . ; Beedell , P . S . ; and many other companions . The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed , Comp . Daniel
as candidate . Comp . Anderson , Chap . 255 , was unanimously elected a member . The following companions were elected to office for the ensuing fortnight : Comps . Child , Z . ; Smart , H . ; Daniel , J . ; Frank , S . N . ; and Webb , P . S . Comp . Brown asked the members to make known amongst their friends the removal of the chapter .
ALL SAINTS CHAPTER ( No . 1716 ) . —This select chapter held its installation meeting at the Vestry Hall , Bow , on the 9 th inst ., the M . E . Z ., Comp . T . Griffiths , occupying the First Principal ' s chair , and being well supported . After the confirmation of the minutes of the convocation held on July 17 th , the companions below the chairs retired . A conclave of First Principals was then
formed , and Ex . Comp . F . A . White , P . Z . 907 , " was inducted into the chair . A conclave of Third Principals was then formed , and Comp . G . Anderson duly installed . Comp . Hunt , the first exaltee of the chapter , having now arrived , a conclave of Second Principals was formed , and he also was duly installed . The entire ceremony was worked with that accuracy and precision which distinguish
the working of the I . P . Z ., Comp . Griffiths . The companions having been admitted and saluted the new M . E . METROPOLITAN COLLEGE . —The quarterly meeting was held at the Hall , Red Lion-square , on Thursday , the 9 th inst . V . W . Frater Lewis-Thomas , S ° , took the chair of M . of T . ; Frater J . R . Foulger , S ° , D . M . of T . j and Fratres YV . Dodd , S ^; T . W . Coffin , W . G . Lemon , and J . J . Thomas as the four Ancients ; Dr . YV . Wynn Westcott , M . B ., S ° , Sec ; and other fratres .
Letters of regret for non-attendance were received from the M . W . Frater Dr . W . R . Woodman , 9 , Supreme Magus ; V . W . Frater George Lambert , M . of T . ; and from Fratres Buss , Ferguson , Hughan , Thicllay , Holland , and others . V . W . Frater C . F . Matier , 9 in Scotia , was elected an honorary member of the college . A discussion took p lace with regard to the hire of the Hall , and the desirability of
changing the place of meeting ; it was ultimately left to Fratres Woodman , Lambert , and Westcott to make the best arrangement possible . There were three approved candidates for the degree of Zelator , but neither of them was able to be present . Frater S . L . Mathers , of Poole , sent to the college a paper on "Some esoteric significations of the Six-pointed and the Five-pointed Stars . " This was read by the Secretary , and received the warmest
commendation from the M . of the T ., and indeed from all present . This was the second essay communicated by Frater Mathers , and a vote of thanks to him was unanimously passed . There being no other business , the M . C . was closed in the customary solemn manner , and adjourned until the second Tuesday in January . ' A majority of those present subsequently partook of refreshment , combined with discussion on occult topics , at the Holborn Restaurant .

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .
A circular , signed by the Earl of Mar and Kellie , as Grand Master Mason of Scotland , is about to be issued to the Scottish Craft , with the view to the raising of funds towards the formation of an extended scheme of Scottish Masonic benevolence . The appeal states that members of Grand Lodge , believing that the time had arrived when the surplus revenue of Grand Lodge , amounting to about £ 1700
annually , might to a great extent be legitimately applied in the promotion of the comfort and well-being of the distressed , brought the matter under the consideration of Grand Lodge , with the result that a special committee appointed to consider the whole question recommended that ten thousand pounds should be raised before the extended scheme of benevolence be commenced ; and on 7 th August
Grand Lodge resolved that one-half of the free income of Grand Lodge be annually handed over to such extended scheme . There is , the circular goes on to say , at the credit of the existing benevolent fund a sum of about £ 6400 , but the revenue from this amount of capital is insufficient to meet even ordinary cases of urgent temporary distress ; and no surplus is available whereby annuities to infirm or aged
brethren or their widows , or for the education or maintenance of their orphan children , can be provided . It is believed that the extended scheme , on the lines indicated , will be more acceptable to the Scottish brethren at home and abroad than were schools and homes erected at considerable cost and with a heavy annual expenditure . Letters of regret for non-attendance were received from the M . W . Frater Dr . W . R . Woodman , 9 , Supreme Magus ; V . W . Frater George Lambert , M . of T . ; and from Fratres Buss , Ferguson , Hughan , Thicllay , Holland , and others . V . W . Frater C . F . Matier , 9 in Scotia , was elected an honorary member of the college . A discussion took p lace with regard to the hire of the Hall , and the desirability of
changing the place of meeting ; it was ultimately left to Fratres Woodman , Lambert , and Westcott to make the best arrangement possible . There were three approved candidates for the degree of Zelator , but neither of them was able to be present . Frater S . L . Mathers , of Poole , sent to the college a paper on "Some esoteric significations of the Six-pointed and the Five-pointed Stars . " This was read by the Secretary , and received the warmest
commendation from the M . of the T ., and indeed from all present . This was the second essay communicated by Frater Mathers , and a vote of thanks to him was unanimously passed . There being no other business , the M . C . was closed in the customary solemn manner , and adjourned until the second Tuesday in January . ' A majority of those present subsequently partook of refreshment , combined with discussion on occult topics , at the Holborn Restaurant .

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .
A circular , signed by the Earl of Mar and Kellie , as Grand Master Mason of Scotland , is about to be issued to the Scottish Craft , with the view to the raising of funds towards the formation of an extended scheme of Scottish Masonic benevolence . The appeal states that members of Grand Lodge , believing that the time had arrived when the surplus revenue of Grand Lodge , amounting to about £ 1700
annually , might to a great extent be legitimately applied in the promotion of the comfort and well-being of the distressed , brought the matter under the consideration of Grand Lodge , with the result that a special committee appointed to consider the whole question recommended that ten thousand pounds should be raised before the extended scheme of benevolence be commenced ; and on 7 th August
Grand Lodge resolved that one-half of the free income of Grand Lodge be annually handed over to such extended scheme . There is , the circular goes on to say , at the credit of the existing benevolent fund a sum of about £ 6400 , but the revenue from this amount of capital is insufficient to meet even ordinary cases of urgent temporary distress ; and no surplus is available whereby annuities to infirm or aged
brethren or their widows , or for the education or maintenance of their orphan children , can be provided . It is believed that the extended scheme , on the lines indicated , will be more acceptable to the Scottish brethren at home and abroad than were schools and homes erected at considerable cost and with a heavy annual expenditure .
