BATH . —Royal Cumberland Chapter ( No . 41 ) . —We lately recorded the proceedings at a most enthusiastic and unique meeting , attended by distinguished companions of the order from London and elsewhere , to celebrate the granting of the centenary jewel , the first ever accorded to a chapter , when the warrant from Supreme Grand Chapter , signed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Grand Z ., was presented to the Principals of No . 41 . b y the Provincial Grand Z ., Col . Adair . On that occasion it

was determined to present a gold centenary jewel to our distinguished Grand Superintendent , as hc signified his desire to become a joining member , whicli would entitle him to wear it . It need hardly be said that his accession to our ranks was hailed with delight and that he was duly elected . His convenience having been consulted , he fixed Thursday , January nth , as a date when he could visit Bath for the purpose of receiving this token of the esteem
in which he i . s held . Accordingly , circulars were issued for a convocation of emergency on that day at the Masonic Hall , and it was arranged that a candidate should be exalted , in order that the head of the province might have an opportunity ot witnessing the form of ritual adopted , of judging as to its propriety , and as to the competency of the oilicers . The following were among the principal companions present : AI . Ex . Col . A . YV . Adair
, Prov . Grand Superintendent ; Lawson Howes , M . E . Z . ; li . Wilkinson , H . ; C . VV . Radway , J . ; T . B . Moutrie , P . Z ., Treas . ; E . J . B . Mercer , E . ; F . Glover , N . ; YV . Hill , S . G . Mitchell , YV . Williamson , T . S . Keene , Dr . Hopkins , 41 , P . Z . 32 S , 5 S 7 , 710 . As visitors , there were Comns . I .
A . limmins , E . 53 ; li . Phillips , P . Z . 79 and 1000 ; W . A . Scott , P . Z . Gi ; K . E . Peach , P . Z . 41 ; Col . G . V . Law , 53 ; J . B . Wilson , 53 ; and VV . J . Willcox , 53 . The Board of Installed Principals having been opened , the companions were admitted , and the chapter was opened . A most efficient choir then gave in very good style the anthem " Behold how good , " & c , to the music composed by Pyne . The circular of summons was read by Scribe Ii ., as were
also several letters of apology for unavoidable absence , notably from Ex . Comp . R . C Else , Prov . G . H ., owing to a Masonic engagement elsewhere to perform an installation ceremony , in consequence of the sudden death of the brother who had been expected to officiate ; from Ex . Comps . Colonel Ford , Prov . G . J . ; VVhite , 41 , the venerable senior member of the chapter , who was M . E . Z . in 1 S 41 ; Rev . C . R . Davy , 53 ; E . T . Payne , P . P . G . H . : Maior Lomr .
Prov . G . E . ; R . Bull , and C li . Davis , 41 . A ballot was taken for Bro . Thos . Ames as a candidate for exaltation . This proving unanimous in his favour , he was admitted , and duly exalted by the regular officers , who all acquitted themselves admirably , although , with the exception of the M . E . Z ., they performed their respective duties for the first time , the annual installation having taken place only three weeks previously .
On the conclusion of the ceremony the First Principal called on Ex . Comp . Thomas Wilton , one of the oldest P . Zs . of the chapter , who advanced to the dais , and addressing the presiding officer said that owing to the unfortunate absence of their very old and esteemed P . Z . Edmund White , who at his advanced age had been unable to undertake the journey from Weston-super-Alarein such unfavourable weather in order to be present on that very
interestingoccasion , it had fallen to his lot to occupy a position which Comp . VVhite would no doubt have filled with more ability and efficiency than himself . He must at the outset congratulate the First Principal upon the very distinguished position which the Royal Cumberland Chapter occupied in being the first under English constitution able to prove a continuous working of 100 years . 'They were assembled on that day to celebrate the first year of another century ; and it must
be gratifying to all present to see the chapter in so vigorous and prosperous a condition , for there were some among them who could remember a time not very remote when it was far otherwise in regard tothe working of the ceremonies . Having obtained a centenary charter from the Supreme Grand Chapter of England , signed by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , it had been thought desirable that the event should be celebrated by electing Colonel Adair , the Prov .
Grand Superintendent , as a member of the chapter . Turning to the gallant colonel , Comp . Wilton , addressing him personally , said that as he had graciously consented to join the chapter , the companions determined to mark tlieir sense of the . honour conferred upon them by his kind comp liance with their wish by presenting to him a gold centenary jewel , of which in the name of the chapter he now requested his acceptance—this being the first of the kind
offered to any Grand Superintendent in England—as a token of the kindly feeling entertained for him , and in recognition of the good Masonic work he had done in the Province of Somerset , not only recently in his present high position , but when connected with it some years ago in another capacity equally eminent . Although his ° dear friend , Edmund White , was not there personally to testify his appreciation of that ceremonial , he had deputed him his behalf to the
on present accomjianying illuminated scroll commemorative of that jewel , and which would serve as a lasting record of the kindly feelings and generous sentiments entertained by the companions towards Colonel Adair , not only in Bath but by the province generally . Comp . Wilton then called upon Comp . Ashley to read the address , which he did with that impressiveness of style and suavity of tone and manner which are so peculiarly
characteristic of him , thus : " Royal Cumberland Royal Arch Chapter , No . 41 , Bath . Warranted nth January , A . L . 17 S 2 ; Centenary Charter granted August , A . L . 1 SS 2 . "To the most excellent Comp . Colonel Alexander Wm . Adair , Grand Superintendent of the Province of Somerset and P . P . G . M . Somerset . "We , the Principals , Past Principals , officers , and
companions of the Royal Arch Cumberland Chapter , No . 41 respectfully request your acceptance of the accompanying centenary jewel—the first of the kind issued—as a small though marked testimonial of the great esteem in which you are deservedly held by the Masonic body of wliich you arc a distinguished ornament , and more especially of our own affection and respect for you personally , and for the manly and Masonic virtues of wliich you have given us so
many proofs in all the high offices to which you have been appointed , especially in that of Grand Superintendent of this province , in which we pray that the Supreme Grand Architect of the Universe may long preserve you in peace happiness , and prosperity . " ' ( The signatures of all the members of the chapter will be appended to this address . It should be mentioned that it
was beautifully illuminated in different colours , and that when thus completed , it will be enclosed in a very handsome frame , carved with appropriate Masonic emblems . ) 'Ihe jewel having been pinned upon Col . Adair ' s breast and the address having been handed to him ,, the Grand Superintendent , who was evidently very sensibly affected by the cordial manner in whicli he had bcen greeted on the

Z ., Treas . ; E . J . B . Mercer , E . ; F . Glover , N . ; YV .
