held at the Sun Hotel , on the ioth inst ., and though there was not a large attendance of brethren , owing possibly to the inclement state of the weather , there was plenty to interest and employ those who did obey the summons . The W . M ., Bro . J . W . Moorman , opened the lodge . Thc ballot was first taken , and proved unanimous in favour of Mr . John Davis , and then Bros . II . Curtis , H . VV . Willis ,
S . Kavanagh , and W . Shrewsbury Salmon were in due form raised to the Sublime Degree . Bros . Morris , Sumner , Tucker , and Huggins next came on for the Fellow Craft Degree . The elected candidate , Mr . Davis , was finally initiated . The W . M . was relieved of some part of the work by Bro . Abel Laurence , Sec . and P . M ., and it was
most creditable to the officers who took share in the ceremonies to notice how well everything was performed . The meetings of the lodge of instruction are bringing forth good fruit , and the Preceptor ( Bro . Laurence ) has good reason to be proud at thc advance in the science which some of his pupils have made .

allow him to give a long speech , as hc had to leave by train . Letters of apology were read from tho I . P . M , Bro . W . Latham Cox , who is with his regiment in Dublin j Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , P . M . ; Bro . Admiral Sir Harry Keppel , Bro . J . Knowles , R . N ., and others . 'The Worshipful Master said that now he had a most
pleasing duty to perform , the most pleasing during his year of office . It was to make a presentation to Bro . A . L . Emanuel , their Hon . Secretary . Bro . Emanuel , like many others , had " tied " himself up , and the members thought they should mark that event . He was connected with several societies in the town , all of which had recognised the great event of his life , and thc brethren had
therefore met together that evening to present Bro . Emanuel with a handsome Dresden china clock and pair of six-light candelabra to match , and hoped _ he would live for many years with his wife and have some little ones about him , who in the coming by-and-bye would be able to look on the presentation with love and pride . Bro . Emanuel had been a most hard working and zealous Secretary , and
had always evinced an interest in the welfare of thc lodge . Might th « One above spare him to be amongst them for many years . Bro . A . L . Emanuel , who was enthusiastically received , thanked the W . M . for the presentation , made on behalf of himself and the brethren , of such a handsome marriage gift . He was connected with many societies , all of which had recognised his humble services , but hc could assure the brethren that none were more appreciated than the
one received that evening from many dear brethren , whose friendship he thoroughly appreciated . Regarding his marriage , he felt he had done a wise and sensible thing , and hoped that he might be spared amongst them for many years to come . He had had a good example set him in Masonry by his late esteemed father , and he assured the brethren that if it was their will hc would always officiate as Secretary with that faithfulness and zeal he had hitherto borne .

Emanuel , like many others , had " tied " himself up , and the members thought they should mark that event . He was connected with several societies in the town , all of which had recognised the great event of his life , and thc brethren had
therefore met together that evening to present Bro . Emanuel with a handsome Dresden china clock and pair of six-light candelabra to match , and hoped _ he would live for many years with his wife and have some little ones about him , who in the coming by-and-bye would be able to look on the presentation with love and pride . Bro . Emanuel had been a most hard working and zealous Secretary , and
had always evinced an interest in the welfare of thc lodge . Might th « One above spare him to be amongst them for many years . Bro . A . L . Emanuel , who was enthusiastically received , thanked the W . M . for the presentation , made on behalf of himself and the brethren , of such a handsome marriage gift . He was connected with many societies , all of which had recognised his humble services , but hc could assure the brethren that none were more appreciated than the
one received that evening from many dear brethren , whose friendship he thoroughly appreciated . Regarding his marriage , he felt he had done a wise and sensible thing , and hoped that he might be spared amongst them for many years to come . He had had a good example set him in Masonry by his late esteemed father , and he assured the brethren that if it was their will hc would always officiate as Secretary with that faithfulness and zeal he had hitherto borne .
