struck with the tone of the School . No one , and I am speaking in the presence of many who make this School oneofthegreat interests of their lives—I venture to say that no one could visit the School without noticing the modest yet cheerful aspect of the pup ils of the Institution . You know that there is some test of the education g iven ; you know that the pupils of this School when they arrive at the proper age enter for the Cambridge examination . But you
may not know of ijheir success . Honours have been awarded , prizes have been gained , but I believe there have been few , if any , cases which have not been satisfactorily or honourably passed . And again , what I ventured 3 'esterday to allude to , domestic usefulness , no small function of women in this life , is b y no means neglected . The managers of this School have the good sense to know that the woman who can cook , who understands
domestic duties , who is capable of managing a household , or of working in a household—the managers of this School have had the good sense to know that all this does not unfit those who acquire it from the pursuit of the more liberal sciences . I found yesterday that one of the best cooks in the School was also one of the best musicians . Let boys or girls learn what is so useful to them in the battle of life ; let them learn that true usefulness does not degrade . Then the ) ' will be able to devote their spare time to the higher culture . But I have something more to say than
this . One thing which struck me more than anything else was the cheerfulness of the demeanour of all the pupils ; I inquired into the cause of it . Wc have all seen schools where teachers and pupils are like machines ; that is not the case in your Institution . I am told that there are instances , and frequent instances , where girls on the point of going home to their parents or
friends have wept at leaving the Institution . Think , then , what a home that must have been to those who are orphans ; and who would have no home but for your kindness and the active co-operation of the mistress of your Institution . But there is one thing-more I would like to say . We know very well that times in this country are hard to all of us ; we know very well that
in no part of England , in no kind of pursuit , are men to be found who have the amount of spare means at their disposal that they had ten years ago ; but I will venture to say this , that I do not believe that money given in charity is ever lost ; I believe that it brings better times to the giver ; and I am confident of this , if you regard the oaths which all of you have taken at
your introduction into Freemasonry 3-011 can do nothing better than carry out those oaths , to fulfil those injunctions , to bear in mind those precedents , than by giving large contributions to the Freemasons' Institutions . I ask you to drink " Success to the Schools , " coupled with the name of Bro . Col . Creaton , the Treasurer .
LIEUT .-COL . CREATON , Grand Treasurer , in reply , said : Right Worshipful Chairman and brethren , as the Treasurer of this Institution I have been called upon to return thanks for the toast which has been so abl 3 ' given . The Chairman has left very little for me to say ; he has travelled over the ground so well that I feel it would be useless for me to travel over
the same ground , and I beg to thank him vety sincerely for the kind way in which he has proposed this toast , and 3 'ou , brethren , for having responded to it so kindly . Prosperity to the Institution I trust will ever be carried out in the future as it has been in the past . Two things are requiredmoney , which our large-hearted brethren come forward with ; and our
management , which I am happy to say at this moment is everything tjiat can be desired , as you have heard from our Chairman . I feel ihat at this time of the evening you are anxious to hear the lists read and know the results of your labours , therefore , I will not detain you longer , but thank you very sincerely for the honour ) 'ou have done to the toast given by the Chairman .
