An "invitation concert" was given on Thursday evening last at St . James's Hall by Miss Carlingford , who , by recent performances at the Savoy Theatre , has shown herself to be an admirable vocalist . There was a large audience , and all the numbers in the programme was well received , Miss Carlingford's songs— "The Lost Chord " and "Spare my boy at sea " —being vehemently applauded . But the chief feature of the evening was Dr . Carter
Moffat's address on "The Ammoniaphone , " an instrument which , after many years of labour and study , he has at length succeeded in perfecting , and which he has invented for the purpose of improving and enriching the voice by the inhalation of chemical compounds resembling artificial Italian air . Dr . Moffat ' s lecture was listened to with the closet attention , and there seems , from the descrip tion and the experiments which accompanied it , good reason to anticipate that the " Ammoniaphone " will prove a success .

An Alarming Disease Afflicting A Numerous Class.
AN ALARMING DISEASE AFFLICTING A NUMEROUS CLASS .
The disease commences with a slight derangement of the stomach , but , if neglected , it in time involves the whole frame , embracing the kidneys , liver , pancreas , and , in fact , the entire glandular system , and the afflicted drags out a miserable existence until death gives relief from suffering .
The disease is often mistaken for other complaints ; but if the reader will ask himself the following questions he will be able to determine whether he himself is one of the afflicted : —Have I distress , pain , or difficulty inbreathing after eating ? Is there a dull , heavy feeling attended by drowsiness ? Have the eyes a yellow tinge ? Does a thick , sticky , mucus gather about tbe gums and teeth in the
mornings , accompanied by a disagreeable taste ? Is the tongue coated ? Is there pain in the sides and back ? Is there a fulness about the right side as if the liver were enlarging . ' Is there costiveness ? Is there vertigo or dizziness when rising suddenly from a horizontal position ? Are the secretions from the kidneys scanty and highly coloured , with a deposit after standing ?
Does food ferment soon after eating , accompanied by flatulence or a belching of gas from the stomach ? Is there frequent palpitation ofthe heart ? These various symptoms . may not be present at one time , but they torment the sufferer in turn as the dreadful disease progresses . If the case be one of long standing there will be a dry , hacking cough , attended after a time by expectoration . In very
advanced stages the skin assumes a dirty brownish appearance , and the hands and feet are covered by a cold , sticky perspiration . As the liver and kidneys become more and more diseased , rheumatic pains appear , and the usual treatment proves entirely unavailing against this latter agonising disorder . The origin of this malady is indigestion or dyspepsia , and a small quantity of the
proper medicine will remove the disease if taken in its incipiency . It is most important that the disease should be promptly and properly treated in its first stages , when a little medicine will effect a cure , and even when it has obtained a strong hold the correct remedy should be persevered in until every vestige of the disease is eradicated , until the appetite has returned , and the digestive organs restored
to a healthy condition . The surest and most effectual remedy for this distressing complaint is " Seigel's Curative Syrup , " a vegetable preparation sold by all Chemists and Medicine Vendors throughout the world , and by the proprietors , A . J . White , Limited , 17 , Farringdon-road , London , E .. This Syrup strikes at the very foundation of the disease , and drives it , root and branch , out of the system . Ask your chemist for Seigel ' s Curative Syrup .
Spanish Town , Jamaica , West Indies , Oct . 24 , rSSz . Dear Sir , —I write to inform you that 1 have derived great benefit from " Seigel's Syrup . " For some years I have suffered from liver complaint , with its many and varied concomitant evils , so that my life was a perpetual misery . Twelve months ago I was induced to try Seigel's
Syrup , and although rather sceptical , having tried so many reputed infallible remedies , I determined to give it at least a fair trial . In two or three days I felt considerably better , and now at the end of twelve months ( having continued taking it ) I am glad to say that I am a different being altogether . It is said of certain pens that they " come as a boon and a blessing to men , " and I have no reason to doubt the truthfulness of the statement . I can
truly say , however , that Seigel's Syrup has come as a " boon and a blessing " to me . I have recommended it to several fellow-sufferers from this distressing complaint , and their testimony is quite in accordance with my own . Gratitude for the benefit 1 have derived from this excellent preparation prompts me to furnish you with this unsolicited testimonial . I am , dear sir , yours ever gratefully , ( Signed ) CAREY B , BERRY , Baptist Missionary .
