HATFIELD . —Cranbourne Lodge ( No . 1580 ) . — This lodge , one of the most successful in the Province of Hertfordshire , held its installation meeting at the Red Lion Hotel on Tuesday last . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . T . S . Hellier , who was supported by the officers of the outgoing year : Bros . F . H . Wilson lies , P . M ., D . P . G . M . Herts ; Edgar Bowyer , P . After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Mr . Richard Catling , of St . Mark ' s College , Chelsea , who was proposed by Bro . Page , and seconded by Bro . Webb . The result was unanimously in favour of the candidate . Bro . J . L . Mather , P . AL , then presented the VV . M . elect , Bro . C . K . Killick , P . M . 1693 , who had been selected at the last
meeting to fill the chair of the Cranbourne Lodge for the seventh year of its existence . The outgoing Master ably performed the ceremony of installation , and in due course the following officers were appointed : Bro . G . Ward Verry , P . M . 127 S , & c , S . W . ; Henry Beadell , J . VV . ; G . F . Cooke , Treas . ; James Terry , Prov . G . S . W . Norths and Hunts , Sec . R . M . B . I ., Sec . ;

Gibbs , Steward ; J . S . Webb , Asst . Steward ; and Thomas , Tyler . _ Bro . Hellier delivered the addresses to Master , Wardens , a . nd brethren , and took his seat amid hearty congratulat ' ons . The duty of initiating Mr . Catlimr , the candidate
named , was the first event that claimed thc attention of the W . M . Bro . Kiliick performed the ceremony in a most competent way , and created a deep impression on the aspirant for the privileges of our ancient Order . The report of the Audit Committee having been presented and adopted , the VV . M . was elected as tlie representative of the lodge on the Board of Finance of the province . Routine work
followed , and lodge was closed . The banquet was capitally served by Mrs . Ward , the hostess of the Red Lion Hotel , and justice was done by all present to the good things provided . On the removal of the cloth , Bro . Killick gave the loyal toasts , which were heartily received . In replying for "The Grand Officers , " Bro . Colonel
Shadwell H . Clerke expressed the gratification he had felt in visiting Hatfield , with its many historical associations . He confessed he had been somewhat seduced from the allegiance he owed the lodge by the charming features of Hatfield House and its surroundings , and felt under deep obligation to Bro . Shillito , who had acted as cicerone for the occasion . The Grand Secretarv referred to the
presence of Bro . C . K . Killick , sen ., the father of the W . M ., and to the pleasure it must afford him—an old Master himself—to see his son placed in the highest position to be obtained in a Masonic lodge . Personally he congratulated the VV . M ., and hoped he might have other opportunities of visiting the lodge . In giving the toast of " Bro . T . 1 " . Hasley , M . P ., " Bro . Killick said the brethren had looked forward with
pleasurable anticipation to have the honour on this occasion of a visit from the R . VV . the Prov . Grand Master . At the last moment , however , a telegram had been received stating that important Parliamentary business prevented the attendance of Bro . Halsey . Ihe toast of " The Deputy Provincial Grand Master and
other Provincial Grand Ofiicers" was next given , special refe rence being made to thezeal displayed by ' Dr . lies , ancl to the way in which his services are at all limes appreciated by the Freemasons of the province . Dr . lies , in a well considered speech , thanked the brethren for the cordial reception they had given him . As for the Provincial Grand Utticers , they were picked men , who knew and fully

appreciated their responsibilities , which he was sure they would strive to fulfil . He was gratified at seeing the hospitality of the members so liberally exercised ; visiting from lodge to lodge was productive of much good , it showed what might be copied , what ought to be avoided . Hc referred to the birthday of the lodge ; he had remarked then that they had brought forth a very healthy child ; hc had watched it in its infancy , and could but be
satisfied now it had reached maturity . Bro . lies paid a high compliment to the outgoing Master , Bro . Hellier , and prognosticated—from what he had that day seen of the ability of Bro . Killick—a happy term of ollice for the new Master . He then spoke of the estimation in which the Cranbourne Lodge is held as a contributor to the Masonic Institutions , and urged the brethren at the lower end of the table to emulate the good deeds of the older
members . "The Health of the Initiate" was the next toast brought forward , and Bro . Catling modestly but expressively acknowledged the honour done him . Bro . Hellier proposed "The Health of the VV . M . " From what they had seen of the ability of Bro . Killick , it was clear the brethren had acted wisely in entrusting to him the guidance of their lodge .
The reply of the W . M . was brief , but well to the point . From the first he had taken a deep interest in the lodge , and nothing on his part should be wanting to continue it in its present nourishing condition . "The Visitors" were next complimented ; and Bros . Killick , sen ., Captain Bedford Pym , and Shillito replied . Bro . Killick , sen ., was pleased at the several allusions that had been made . He had had the pleasure of seeing his
son installed Master of another lodge , wherein he ( the speaker ) has fhe honour of acting as the Secretary . He felt assured the Cranbourne Lodge would sustain its prestige under its present Master . In proposing "The Health of the Past Masters , " the VV . M ., in order to save time , would give the loast in its corporate capacity , and would include their Treasurer and Secretary . He specially referred to the ability displayed
by Bro . Hellier in carrying out the duties of the installation , and in the name of the lodge presented him with the Past Master ' s jewel . Bro . Hellier , after acknowledging thc kind remarks of the VV . M ., said he scarcely could hnd words to thank the members for the kindness they at all times had shown him . He felt he had only done his duty , but at the same time was none the less gratified at the way in which his efforts seemed to be appreciated .
In replying for the Treasurer and Secretary , Bro . Terry regretted Bro . Cook had been compelled to leave ; their Treasurer had laboured zealously for this lodge , which he ( Bro . Terry ) was proud to know was free from all liability . It would at all times be the main effort of the Past Masters to sustain it in a sound financial position . " The Officers " were then complimented , and the Tyler was summoned to give the parting toast . The proceedings throughout were enlivened by songs and recitations .
LANDPORT . —Landport Lodge ( No . 1776 ) . —At the regular meeting-of this lodge held on Thursday , the iSth inst ., it was carried unanimously on the proposition of Bro . E . S . Main , P . M ., that a petition be forwarded to the Grand Lodge praying for a warrant to constitute a new lodge , to be named the Duke of Albany Lodge . The granting of this is very essential , as the Landport Lodge has so many members that the promotion to office becomes
slow . Bro . Alderman VV . D . King , P . M ., was at the same meeting presented with a testimonial in recognition of the many valuable services rendered to the lodge , in the form of a Life Subscribership to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , a similar one for the Girls Institution , and an illuminated address on vellum handsomely framed . Bro . T . H . Williams , VV . M ., said that the duty he had
been called upon to do was one which gave him a very great amount of satisfaction , as it was meant to convey in a small degree their appreciation of the services of one whom they all so much respected . The Landport Lodge was in its fourth year of existence , and he had been preceded by three Worshipful Masters , two of whom were founders . The latter two had had tlieir services duly recognised in open lodge . At the expiration of Worshipful Bro .
Murrell's year of office , the lodge being still young and requiring good nursing , it was thought best to seek for a brother to preside who , by his social position , character , and influence , would materially contribute to the advancement of the lodge . Bro . Alain , P . M ., and Bro . Cunningham , S . VV ., succeeded in inducing Bro . VV . D . King to accept the office , in addition to the important office which he was at that time filling , that of Mayor of Portsmouth .
During his ( Bro . king s ) term of office the lodge attained that Degree of success as few lodges enjoyed , and the effect of his ruling was still apparent . Although living out of town Bro . King never missed a lodge meeting until his serious illness , which at one time threatened to prove fatal , but from which , thanks to the G . A . O . T . U ., he had now recovered . Since Bro . King's health had been restored it had been decided by the brethren of the Landport Lodsre
that something should be done to show him that they were not unmindful of the great and lasting good he had conferred upon the lodge , and it was now his ( W . M . 's ) pleasant duty to ask Bro . King ' s acceptance of two Life Subscriberships in the Boys' and Girls' Schools and the address which had becn prepared . The VV . M . in conclusion expressed a hope that the Almighty would grant Bro . King long life and happiness .
Bro . King , P . M ., who was most cordially received , said that one of the most embarrassing positions for a man to be placed in was to have to listen to his own praises being sounded , and to receive at the hands of his fellows some mark of their appreciation of his services . That being so , he could hardly find words wherewith to express his thanks to the VV . M . for the very kind things he had said . It was true he ( Bro . King ) had taken a deep interest in the welfare of the lodge , and was glad to see it had reached so high
a position that steps were being taken for the formation of a new lodge in connection with it , to be called the Duke of Albany Lodge . He was glad to remember that he was the Master of ihe lodge when that hall was inaugurated , and he hoped that the time was not far distant when all petty differences would be sunk , and that the whole of the Masons of Portsmouth would recognise that building as the home and temple of Freemasonry in Portsmouth . He took some interest in the welfare of the Educational Institutions of thc Order , and he could assure them he should

highly value the testimonial of the two Life Subscriberships lor which , as well as for the uniform kindness he invariably received at the hands of th-2 brethren , he begged fo return them his sincere thanks . 'I he brethren afterwards partook of a sumptuous banquet .
