the W . AI . Elect ( Bro . Ephraim Harris ) to the Installing Master ( Bro . VV . R . Sowter ) , who thereupon , with all due rite and ceremon }* , inducted him into the chair of K . S . The W . Renshaw had been previously elected Treasurer , but , owing to indisposition , was not present to be invested . The addresses to the W . AL were delivered by Bro . VV . F . Towle , to the Wardens by Bro . H . L . Rocca , and to the brethren by Bro . VV . R . Sowter . Bro . VV . F . Towle concluded the ceremony with prayer . The W . M . said the first pleasing duty he had to perform
in his new capacity was to propose that Bro . VV . R . Sowter , LP . AL , be retained as Charity Representative for the lodge at the East Lancashire Systematic Alasonic Educational Institution , as he was quite Mire no one more fitted for that office could be found in the lodge . The proposition was carried , and " Hearty good wishes " having been expressed by the lodge , the lodge was closed in peace and harmony . The brethren afterwards celebrated the festival of St .
John at a banquet , which was well served , and on the conclusion of which , they returned to the lodge-room , where dessert had been prepared for them . The W . AL proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were duly henoured , chat of " The V . W . D . P . G . AL Bro . George Mellor ; " and "The Present and Past Provincial Grand Officers , " being responded to by Bro . Jas . Heelis , P . G . Registrar .
In proposing "Thc Health of the W . AI , " Bro . W . R . Sowter , I . P . M ., said that Bro . Harris most worthily occupied his present position , having tilled every office in the lodge except Org ., in a manner that the Blair Lodge had never before seen excelled , and he trusted his year of office would be marked with more success than any other . He asked the brethren to cordially drink his health . The W . AL thanked them all for the habitual kindness
they had shown him . He came amongst them almost a stranger , but had found the right hand of fellowship extended to him on all sides , and this proved what good . Masonry could do throughout the world . He assured them he thoroughly appreciated the hommr that day bestowed upon him , and would do his best to discharge the important duties connected with the office . Before sitting down the W . AI . said it gave him great
pleasure to propose "The Health of their LP . AL , Bro . Sowter . " He felt sure there was not one who did not know and approve of the valuable services Bro . Sowter had rendered to the lodge during his two years' Alastership , and it was almost impossible to over-estimate such services . It afforded him the liveliest satisfaction to present Bro . Sowter , in the name of the lodge , with a Past Alaster ' s gold jewel , as a slight acknowledgment of his services , and he felt
certain that no jewel was ever pinned on the breast of a man more deserving of it j and he was sure the brethren wished , with him , that Bro . Sowter might long be spared to wear this , and still higher honours . The W . AL concluded by remarking that he hoped the fact of the cost of this jewel being entirely defrayed by the members of the lodge , and not taken from the lodge funds , would enhance its value in the eyes of their LP . AL
The jewel , which was made of 15-carat gold , and suspended b y three handsome bars , was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street . Bro . Sowter , in a very humoursome speech , said he required nothing to remind him he had done his duty , as the applause of the brethren and the hearty manner in which they had responded to the toast was quite sufficient for him . He , however , assured them he should always look upon the jewel as a visible token of their esteem .
Bro . A . Bickley proposed "The Health of the P . AI . ' s , " which was responded to by Bro . H . L . Rucca . Several other toasts were proposed and responded to , including that of "The Initiate , " "Visitors , " "Success to the Blair Lodge , " and after spending a most enjoyable evening the brethren separated . The musical portion of the programme was entrusted to and most ably carried out by those well-known executants , Bros . Dumville , A . Lewtas , and H . C . Aliller .
JARROW . —St . Bede Lodge ( No . 1119 ) . —On the 16 th inst . an emergency meeting of this thriving lodge was held in the Masonic Hall , Grange-road , when there was a good attendance of the brethren . The lodge was duly opened by Bro . Hugh Colder , W . AL , assisted by the following officers : Bros . A . McDougall , I . ^ . AL : J . Hickman , S . W . j Jas . Sedcole , J . W . j J . Witter , P . AL Sec . ; and others . Four Fellow Crafts , Bros . A . VV . Roberts , N . K . Brown ,
Alex . Kinghorn , and Jos . Lamb , having satisfactorily answered the questions , were entrusted with the test of merit , and were properly prepared for being raised to the Sublime Degree of a Alaster Alason . The ceremony o ' raising the four brethren was ably performed by Bro . J . Ponder , P . M . The VV . M . received the congratulations of Bro . lessiman , from Canada . Lodge was closed in peace and harmony , and afterwards a pleasant evening was spent .

RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — One of the pleasantest of pleasant evenings was passed on the 7 th inst . by the brethren of the above lodge , under the able presidency of the W . AL , Bro . Smalman Smith . The work of the lodge consisted of a raising and an initiation , the ceremonies being performed by the W . M . in a style which won the encomiums of all present , the charges being
delivered with that eloquence and impiessiveness which adds much to the beauiy of the ceremony . After the lodge had been closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting-room , where a very recherche repast awaited them . Upon the removal ot the cloth , the W . AI . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were heartily
responded to ; and the enjoyment of the evening was much enhanced by the excellent singing which was contributed by Bros . Crowest , Clarkson , Shorey , Craig , Edwin Strange , Baker , and the W . AI . Bro . Crowest , the lodge ' rganist , presided at the piano . The meeting , the last of the present session , was brought to a close with kindly farewells , trusting to resume friendly greetings in April next .
HARRINGTON . —Curwen Lodge ( No . 1400 ) . —The annual installatiou meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the nth inst ., for the purpose of installing Bro . Joseph Hodgson , as W . M . occupied the chair , supported by Bros . Gibson , Dick , Nicholson , and Carlyle , when the loyal and Alasonic toasts were duly honoured . The toast of "The I . P . M . " was proposed by Bro .
Dick , who said he had a very pleasant duty to perform , that was to present Bro . James Batt with a very handsome Past Alaster's jewel , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , with a suitable inscription , for his valuable sei vices rendered to the lodge during his Alastership . The general work of the lodge had proceeded in the past year as in former years , and they had been in possession of many of thc useful for Masonic purposes ,
but little or nothing of the ornamental j but they could now say they had got a good share of the latter as well as the former , the transformation had come at last , and thc credit was almost entirely due to our worthy brother . Bro . Batt briefly replied . After a long toast list had been gone through , and a few excellent songs ftom several of the brethren , the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a close .
HAMPTON . —Hemming Lodge ( No . 1512 ) . — The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Lion Hotel , on the 19 th inst . Among those present were Bros . T . C . Walls , P . P . G . S . B . The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , Bros . Hollands and Citreon , 1326 , were
passed to the Second Degree . At this stage ot the proceedings , the R . VV . D . P . G . AL of Middlesex , Bro . Raymond Thrupp , was announced , and was received with the customary honours . W . Bro . VV . Hammond then presented Bro . Hiscox tothe W . M ., who at once proceeded to obligate him as Master elect . The officers officiating at the subsequent Board of Installed Alasters were Bros . E .

and Wheatley , A . W . S . Several names were then handed in for initiation at the next meeting . Previously to the lodge being closed , the vote of ten guineas placed on Bro . Ockenden ' s list as Steward at the last Festival of the Boys' School , was confirmed ; and the sum of ten guineas voted to one of the three Alasonic Charities , in the name of Bro . Walls , in
recognition of his services as W . AL , was also passed " nem con . " Upon the motion of VV . Bros . W . Hammond and E . Hopwood , a voce of thanks was unanimously passed to the I . P . M ., for the manner in w * iich he had performed the ceremony of installation . The Auditors' report was then read and adopted . The brethren having adjourned partook of a well served
banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth the customary toasts followed , but in consequence of the lateness of the hour they were but briefly proposed by the W . M . In giving "The Health of the K . W . D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , " the W . M . expressed his acknowledgment to Bro . Thrupp for having done him the hon . iur of being present at his installation , and he , the W . M ., in the name of the lodge , expressed a hope that the

the distinction thus conferred , would be continued as often as the Deputy Grand Master ' s engagements would permit . Bro . Thrupp , in reply , thanked the brethren lor the warm reception that had been accorded to him that day , both in and out of lodge . The Hemming was interesting to him from the fact that Dr . Hemming , in whose honour it had been named , and who was a very distinguished and erudite Alason in his day , had been initiated in his , the
Deputy Alaster ' s , mother Lodge of Harmony , and what was still more curious , the ceremony had been performed in that very hotel . He congratu ated the lodge upon its working , and expressed a hope that the new officer-, who had been appointed that evening would endeavour to emulate the exertions of their older brethren , and thus preserve the prestigeof No . 1512 . " The Past Masters" was coupled with the name of the I . P . M ., and at the conclusion of his
speech , the W . AI . presented Bro . Walls with Jthe very handsome and distinctive Past Master ' s jewel of the lodge , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . The recipient having duly thanked the brethren , the toast of " The Visitors " was enthusiastically drunk , and responded b > by Bros . Groome , Atkin and AlcClelland , who more or less passed some very flattering remarks upon the working and hospitality of the lodge .
lhe toast of "Treasurer and Secretary" was next given . VV . Bros . Hopwood and Hammond , in reponse , expressed their thanks for the very kind way in which the W . AI . had spoken of their services . As founders , they were qualified to witness the steady progress of the lodge , and as officers they endeavoured by their exertions to
enhance in every way , both the financial and working positions ' of the lodge . "The Masonic Charities" was coupled with the name of Bro . Ockenden , who , in a short but effective speech , advocateu the cause of Alasonic Charity on behalf of the three institutions at the forthcoming festival of 1 SS 3 . "The Health of the Officers" terminated the proceedings .
DUNMOW . —Rosslyn Lodge ( No . 1543 ) . —This lodge held its usual meeting at the Saracen ' s Head Hotel , on Tuesday , the 24 th inst . Present : Bros . Dehane , W . AL ; Wa-ner , S . VV . ; Rattray , J . VV . ; Clapham , P . AL , S . D . ; Calanan , J . U . ; Rhind , I . G . ; Snell , P . M , Treas . ; VV . Rowe , Russell , and E . Dudley , Saffron Walden Lodge . The lodge was duly opened , and the minutes confirmed . Bro . Warner , who had been elected W . AI . in his absence .
now informed the brethren that he regretted he could not undertake the duties of VV . M ., through unforeseen circumstances , over which he had no control . Bro . W . Rowe was passed to the Second Degree . The accounts having been audited , the W . M . stated that a balance in favour of the lodge was in the hands of the Treasurer .

AL then made a few appropriate and feeling remarks on the death of their Provincial Grand Alaster , Lord Tenterden , and it was unanimously resolved that a letter of condolence be sent to Lady I enterden . At the banquet which lolloped , the W . AI . presided with his usual geniality , and gave the loyal and Masonic toasts which were duly responded to , and a pleasant evening was spent

In proposing "Thc Health of the W . AI , " Bro . W . R . Sowter , I . P . M ., said that Bro . Harris most worthily occupied his present position , having tilled every office in the lodge except Org ., in a manner that the Blair Lodge had never before seen excelled , and he trusted his year of office would be marked with more success than any other . He asked the brethren to cordially drink his health . The W . AL thanked them all for the habitual kindness
they had shown him . He came amongst them almost a stranger , but had found the right hand of fellowship extended to him on all sides , and this proved what good . Masonry could do throughout the world . He assured them he thoroughly appreciated the hommr that day bestowed upon him , and would do his best to discharge the important duties connected with the office . Before sitting down the W . AI . said it gave him great
pleasure to propose "The Health of their LP . AL , Bro . Sowter . " He felt sure there was not one who did not know and approve of the valuable services Bro . Sowter had rendered to the lodge during his two years' Alastership , and it was almost impossible to over-estimate such services . It afforded him the liveliest satisfaction to present Bro . Sowter , in the name of the lodge , with a Past Alaster ' s gold jewel , as a slight acknowledgment of his services , and he felt
certain that no jewel was ever pinned on the breast of a man more deserving of it j and he was sure the brethren wished , with him , that Bro . Sowter might long be spared to wear this , and still higher honours . The W . AL concluded by remarking that he hoped the fact of the cost of this jewel being entirely defrayed by the members of the lodge , and not taken from the lodge funds , would enhance its value in the eyes of their LP . The jewel , which was made of 15-carat gold , and suspended b y three handsome bars , was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street . Bro . Sowter , in a very humoursome speech , said he required nothing to remind him he had done his duty , as the applause of the brethren and the hearty manner in which they had responded to the toast was quite sufficient for him . He , however , assured them he should always look upon the jewel as a visible token of their esteem .
Bro . A . Bickley proposed "The Health of the P . AI . ' s , " which was responded to by Bro . H . L . Rucca . Several other toasts were proposed and responded to , including that of "The Initiate , " "Visitors , " "Success to the Blair Lodge , " and after spending a most enjoyable evening the brethren separated . The musical portion of the programme was entrusted to and most ably carried out by those well-known executants , Bros . Dumville , A . Lewtas , and H . C . Aliller .

Bede Lodge ( No . 1119 ) . —On the 16 th inst . an emergency meeting of this thriving lodge was held in the Masonic Hall , Grange-road , when there was a good attendance of the brethren . Lodge was closed in peace and harmony , and afterwards a pleasant evening was spent .

RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — One of the pleasantest of pleasant evenings was passed on the 7 th inst . by the brethren of the above lodge , under the able presidency of the W . AL , Bro . Smalman Smith . The work of the lodge consisted of a raising and an initiation , the ceremonies being performed by the W . M . in a style which won the encomiums of all present , the charges being
delivered with that eloquence and impiessiveness which adds much to the beauiy of the ceremony . After the lodge had been closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting-room , where a very recherche repast awaited them . Upon the removal ot the cloth , the W . AI . gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were heartily
responded to ; and the enjoyment of the evening was much enhanced by the excellent singing which was contributed by Bros . Crowest , Clarkson , Shorey , Craig , Edwin Strange , Baker , and the W . AI . Bro . Crowest , the lodge ' rganist , presided at the piano . The meeting , the last of the present session , was brought to a close with kindly farewells , trusting to resume friendly greetings in April next .

but little or nothing of the ornamental j but they could now say they had got a good share of the latter as well as the former , the transformation had come at last , and thc credit was almost entirely due to our worthy brother . Thrupp , in reply , thanked the brethren lor the warm reception that had been accorded to him that day , both in and out of lodge . The Hemming was interesting to him from the fact that Dr . Hemming , in whose honour it had been named , and who was a very distinguished and erudite Alason in his day , had been initiated in his , the
Deputy Alaster ' s , mother Lodge of Harmony , and what was still more curious , the ceremony had been performed in that very hotel . He congratu ated the lodge upon its working , and expressed a hope that the new officer-, who had been appointed that evening would endeavour to emulate the exertions of their older brethren , and thus preserve the prestigeof No . 1512 . " The Past Masters" was coupled with the name of the I . P . M ., and at the conclusion of his
speech , the W . AI . presented Bro . Walls with Jthe very handsome and distinctive Past Master ' s jewel of the lodge , manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . The recipient having duly thanked the brethren , the toast of " The Visitors " was enthusiastically drunk , and responded b > by Bros . Groome , Atkin and AlcClelland , who more or less passed some very flattering remarks upon the working and hospitality of the lodge .
lhe toast of "Treasurer and Secretary" was next given . VV . Bros . Hopwood and Hammond , in reponse , expressed their thanks for the very kind way in which the W . AI . had spoken of their services . As founders , they were qualified to witness the steady progress of the lodge , and as officers they endeavoured by their exertions to
enhance in every way , both the financial and working positions ' of the lodge . "The Masonic Charities" was coupled with the name of Bro . Ockenden , who , in a short but effective speech , advocateu the cause of Alasonic Charity on behalf of the three institutions at the forthcoming festival of 1 SS 3 . "The Health of the Officers" terminated the proceedings .
