THE ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the bridge intended to replace that AA'hich was destroyed by tho Hood of November , 1853 , took place on Thursday , November 10 , under every circumstance ^ that could tend to add eclat to tho proceedings and sustain the long-enjoyed
reputation of Minister ' s capital for the magnificence of its civic disp lays . The presence of the Lord Lieutenant , the prominent part taken by the brethren of tho several Masonic Lodges in this locality , who appeared in full Masonic costume and with their jewels and insignia , the attendance of the Mayor iu his robes and badges of office , aud of many members of the Town Council , all combined to render the scene one of unsurpassable interest . The weather , too , that most important element in the success brilliant that of the preceding
of all out-door festivities , though not so as day , was as favourable as could well be desired , and much more so than afc this time of the year could have been expected . To accommodate the numbers ivhich were expected to bo present the city engineer , Sir John Benson , had done all that lay in his power . Several large barges had been boarded over aud formed into a commodilatform the river close to the spot where the stone was to bo
ous p on laid and on this the members of the Toivn Council , ivith some of the other public bodies and a few of the more leading citizens were to take their place .
