NOTES . ( a ) Hanover . —Freemasonry appears to have made its way into Hanover from Hamburg , in 1744 , when a warrant for a lodge , " Frederick of the White Horse , " was granted . It was not , however , till 174 G that the lodge engaged in active operations . At this time , and until the year
1 S 2 S , Hanoverian Masonry worked under a Provincial Grand Master appointed by the Grand Lodge of England , except during the period of French supremacy in Germany , when the P . G . Lodge , and Lodge Frederick ceased operations . When Hanover was inincorporated with the Kingdom of
Westphalia , the P . G . Lodge j ' oined the Grand Lodge of Hamburg having previousl y accepted the rite of Schrdeder . In 1 S 2 S it declared itself an independent Grand Lodge , with Ernest , Duke of Cumberland , afterwards King of Hanover , as its Grand Master , See Note ( k ) , for August .
( b ) Johnson . —A most arrant impostor , whose real name appears to have been Leucht , but who passed under several aliases at different periods of his career . In 175 S he appeared at Jena , and became friendly with Von Hund . Here he professed to have authority from the so-called
Scottish Templar system to extend it in Germany , and accordingly set up a ¦ chapter with Dr . Teichmeyer as president . Hewas exposed in 1764 , and arrested the year following in Alsleben , whence he was conducted to the Wartburg , ivhere , in the custody of Von Fritsch , he died , 1775 .
( c ) Bro . Von Guionneau was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Three Globes , Berlin , for a period of twenty-four years , and died in 1 S 29 . He has made himself remembered by establishing a fund for rendering assistance to Freemasons' sons while pursuing their studies .
( d ) Bro . Von Botzelaer was third in order of the G . Masters of the G . Lodge of the Netherlands , having been appointed to that office in 1759 , in succession to Bro . Count Von Bentinck . He remained Grand Master for thirty-nine years . The year following his election a new Book of
Constitutions was issued , which materially assisted in consolidating the Craft in this country . It was , also , through his mediation that the Netherlander effected their complete independence of England ; the agreement which was drawn in 1779 only stipulating that the Grand Lodge of the Netherlands
should not establish lodges in England or the English possessions . In 179 S , the year of his death , he submitted to the brethren a new Statute Book , in accordance with which the Grand Lodge accepted only the three Symbolic Degrees , the four High Degrees being placed under a Grand Chapter .
{ e ) Utah . —In this jurisdiction there are some half-dozen lodges . According to statistics we have seen for the year 1 SS 0 , the financial condition of the Grand Lodge is most prosperous , the statement of account showing a balance to the good of over £ 300 . The library contains 3400 volumes , valued
at 7000 dollars ( £ 1400 ) . (/) Copenhagen . —It was in this city that , in 1743 , Freemasonry first made its appearance in Denmark , a lodge without the sanction of the Grand Master , having been set up by a Baron Von Munich , and four other brethren . In January , 1745 , it took
the name of "St . Martin , " and in 1 749 it received its warrant of constitution from Grand Master Lord Byron . At the very outset of its career , however , some of the brethren separated , and set up a lodge " Zorobabel , " which was warranted by Grand Master Lord Cranstoun , in 1745 .
