The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed the
ballot was taken for Messrs . Woolf Jacobs , Emanuel Jacobs , and George B . Gilbey , and proving unanimous , Bro . S . Jacobs , P . M . 1327 , and P . P . G . P . Herts , by special request took the chair , and in a most impressive and feeling manner initiated his two sons ( the Messrs . Jacobs ) into Freemasonry . Bro . White initiated Mr . Gilbey in his own faultless style . Bro . R . Warren , P . AI ., then
proceeded for the second time to install Bro . White , who appointed and invested the following as his officers for the ensuing year : Bros . G . H . Hill , S . W . ; T . Beeson , J . VV . ; E . A 1 . of Essex , regretting that a previous engagement at Colchester , where he had promised to install the incoming Alaster of lodge 51 , prevented his attendance at this lodge , " and it is needless to
say that his absence was much regretted by thc brethren . The lodge was then closed and the brethren adjourned to the Golden Lion , where the worthy host had ready for discussion a particularly alluring menu , and it was discussed accordingly . The first toast was that of " The Queen and the Craft , " and the Worshipful Alaster asked thc brethren to drink the toast with the eclat it deserved , especially as that was her Majesty ' s birthday . The toast was drank with a hearty fire .
Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
" The Health of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . M . of England , and Grand Officers , Present and Past , " having been drunk , that of "Thc Provincial Grand Master of Essex " was honoured . In giving the toast of " Bro . Philbrick , the D . P . G . M . of Essex , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the Worshipful Master said he regretted exceedingly , and felt sure they all regretted , the unavoidable
absence of Bro . Philbrick . Having heard Bro . Philbrick perform the installation ceremony , he could assure them that they had lost a Alasonie and intellectual treat through his absence ; not but that their esteemed Bro . Warren had admirably performed the duty , but the presence and working of their distinguished D . G . M . would have conferred an honour on the lodge . They were proud of their Grand Officers , and proud of the fact that one of their esteemed
Past Masters , Bro . Manning , was a Provincial Grand Officer , and as he was present he should couple the toast with his name . Bro . Alanning in response felt all the responsibility of having to acknowled ge such an important toast , especially as he held the distinguished position of D . C . in their lodge . He regretted to say that he had been rather unfortunate in his provincial experienceinasmuch as he had never seen
, the late P . G . A 1 ., Bro . Clarke having presided for him ; but now they had Lord Brooke for their G . AI ., and he ( Bro . Manning ) felt that under his lordship ' s rule and guidance the province would become second to none in the kingdom . He asked the brethren to rally round the G . AI . and Grand Officers , support the charities , and show by that that their deeds were worthy of their good works and , like the latter , sprung from their heart .
Bro . Warren then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and in so doing said he felt himself inadequate to express his admiration for the many excellent qualities of Bro . VVhite , both as a man and a Alason . Their selection of him to the chair of the lodge last month proved that he was the right man in the ri g ht place . The lodge had prospered under his rule , and it they went on as they were going they would soon have to meet in a larger room . He asked them to drink the toast in a manner worthy of such a iriacfnr
Bro . White , who was repeatedly cheered on rising to respond , said the l . P . M . had told them of his good qualities , but none of his bad ones ; however , he had spoken very kindly of him , and they had by their warm reception of the toast endorsed his remarks in a very gratifying manner . As he ( the W . AI . ) told them last year , if they elected him he should do his utmost for the success of the lodge , and he thought he might fairly say that with their help the
lodge had been resuscitated and was prospering . It was becoming known and appreciated in the town of Romford , and he was proud to say that it was ' is privilege that day to place a Romford brother in office , who , although a young Mason , had upon occasions worked the duties of S . W . exceedingly well . He trusted to have another good year of
office , and hoped when he did leave the chair to be worthy of the flattering eulogium so kindly passed upon him by the I . P . AI . " The Initiates" having been toasted , and having duly returned thanks " The Visitors" received a heartv fire . *
Bro . Dennis in the course of a brilliant speech regretted that the honour of responding had not been placed in the hands of some more able and distinguished visitor . First then let him say how much he had been gratified and impressed at seeing an old Alason and Past Alaster initiate his own two sons into Masonry ; and how grandly , how masterfully , and how eloquently had the father and the Alason recited their impressive and beautiful ritual , which
once heard by an initiate under such circumstances could never be forgotten . Having been a Mason for many years he could only say that Bro . Jacobs must have been an honour to his own lodge , and must have felt great pride at initiating his own children into the Craft that he evidently loved . It was an unique proceeding , and reflected honour on all concerned . Now as to their W . M . he had told them that he ( Bro . Dennis ) was his father in Masonry ; wellhe could safel
, y say that he was proud of his son . Only the previous evening Bro . VVhite , who was a distinguished R . A . Alason , attended the Royal Albert chapter , of which he was a P : Z ., and as they could only muster a scratch crew took the First Principal ' s chair at a moment ' s notice , and did his work splendidly . It had been his privilege to introduce Bro . White to his mother lodge , 907 , and further to install him as its W . M . in due course . When he saw Bro . White installed in that lodge last vear .
he prophesied that they would have a good Alaster , and that prophesy had be believed come true . He again wished him and the lodge every prosperity , and cordially thanked them for the toast . Bros . Cavil , Ayres , Vance , Popplestone , Gaskill , Jolly , Wells , and Carrell also responded . "The toast of the Past Masters " followed , and Bros . West , Heaseman , Todmore , and Manning returned thanks .
"The Officers , " "Masonic Press , " and Tyler's toasts concluded the proceedings , which were enlivened by the excellent singing of Bros . Lawler and Scharteau . ALDERSHOT . —Army and Navy Lodge ( No 1971 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge took place on Thursday , the 21 st ult ., at the Masonic Hall . Bro . Assist .-Com . General Cook , W . AI ., occupied the chair , supported by the following officers and brethren : Bros . Lieut .-Col .
Sartonus , S . W . ; Dr . Grier , J . W . ; Captain Croisdale , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., Sec ; Major-General Reilley , S . D . ; Captain Cole , J . D . ( pro tern ); Rev . J . Muffins , I . G . ; Lapham , Bendall , Kay , Burns ( Tyler ) , and others . After the minutes of the last lodge were read and confirmed the ballot was taken for the Rev . Charles Gregson as a joining member , and for Surgeon Simpson as a candidate for initiation , which in each case proved unanimous .
Dr . Simpson being in attendance was initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry by the W . AI ., the ceremony being performed with that neatness and precision which are the characteristics of Bro . Cook ' s Masonic work . Bro . Captain Croisdale , P . M ., P . P . G . Swd . Br ., then gave a detailed statement of the present financial condition
and the future prospects of the lodge , fn the course of his observations he congratulated the members upon the progress they were making towards shaking off the trammels of debt , and said as an old Past Alaster he considered they were working in the right direction . Their lodge had not been in existence 12 months , and although their financial progress had not fully realised their expectations , he hoped
