the last few months by his issue of "The Four Old Lodges and their Descendants " and "The Atholl Lodges . " No works of greater importance have ever been issued on Freemasonry , of such value to the Craft their utility as books of reference , their accurate information as to all
lodges from 1717 to the Union in 1813 , and their most interesting details of thc progress of the Craft from earl y days down to this century , are such that they secure for Bro . Gould not onl y the front rank amongst Masonic historians , but entitle him to the gratitude and esteem
of the Craft universal for his painstaking , faithful , and scholarly histories . He has displayed the critical faculty to some purpose , and has done for thc two rival Grand Lodges , in the compilation of their lists of lodges , in connection with his friend and brother Hughan , what has been wanting ever
since the Union in 1813 , but has never before been even attempted . We have already reviewed these two remarkable works , and anticipate soon a similar pleasure in looking over another volume by thc same brother , on Military Lodges , after which we hope others will follow , for our brother
has a gift for such studies , and should continue his researches , which have already been so productive of great results . Indeed , his duty as well as his p leasure almost demand such labours , for we look to him with confidence , and are never disappointed . Bro . Gould was rrnzetted to a commission in thc
Army in 1855 , and retired by the sale thereof in 1865 . According to Hart ' s "Army List" it will be seen that it is true of him as of Freemasons generally , a good ifason makes a good soldier : "Served for nine years in the 31 st Regiment , and commanded a company throughout the
campaign in the North of China in 1 S 60 , including the action of Sinho , and storming of Tanku ( medal with clasps for the Taku Forts ) . Served on the staff during the operations against the Taepings , in the vicinity of Shanghai , in April and May , 1862 , and was present at the taking of the
stockade of Nanhsiang , capture by escalade of ihe walled cities of Kadin , Tsinpoo , and Tsolin , the fortified town of Najao , and the affair at Nanhsiang . " As we fear we have alread y risked our devoted head in making use of a private exchange of dates ( as to our Masonic careers ) for thc
