his appointment as W . M . of Lodge Union , No . 52 ; his journey to America ; his election for the sixteenth time as representative of the 2 nd Ward in the Norwich Town Council ; and , lastly , his election as Member of the House of Commons for this his native city . He assured the brethren that in whatever position he was placed his utmost endeavours should be to carry out the duties with the utmost zeal and fidelity .
The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Health of the P . G . Secretary . " Bro . J . B . Aldis responded in his usual humorous style . The I . P . M . then proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " in eulogistic terms , which was heartily received by the brethren . The W . M ., who on rising to respond was received with
immense enthusiasm , said that he felt if there was one task harder than another for any brother to do it was that of responding to the toast of his own health , and that was a difficulty he now felt himself placed in ; he would therefore ask them for their kind indulgence . But first he desired to thank the I . P . M . for the kind expressions of good feeling made by him in giving the toast of his health , and the brethren in so heartily responding . Having only
just been placed in the highest position the lodge could give him , he felt lost to express his feelings so fully as he hoped to do on a future occasion . However , he heartily thanked the lodge for the honour conferred upon him , and promised that his best and earnest endeavours should be devoted to the working of the lodge , and the comfort and p leasure of the brethren and visitors attending their meeting during his year of office , and would try , with the help of
I . Lr . A . O . T . U ., to leave the lodge in a better position than it was at the present time . The VV , M . then proposed a toast , which he characterised as the toast of the evening—it was "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . VV . J . Butler "—in doing which he said no brother wh > had in any way been connected with the lodge , or who had visited it , could have failed to see that Bro . Butler was one of the best Masters then in the province .
Bro . Butler had evinced proficiency in his work , and the perfectness with which he had performed the ceremony of the evening , namely , installing him ( the W . M . ) , called forth their admiration of his skill and ability . Before sitting down the W . M . said he had a pleasing duty to perform , which was , in the name of himself and the lodge , to present to Bro . ButleraveryhandsomeP . M . ' sjewel , subscribed for by the officers and brethren , which he pinned upon Bro . Butler ' s breast .
The jewel , which is of the locket shape and of iS-carat gold , was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , of London , and bears the following inscription on the back : — " Presented to Bro : VV . J . Butler , I . P . M . 213 , by the officers and brethren of the lodge as a mark of their esteem upon his retiring from the chair . January 19 th , 18 SG . " Bro . VV . J . Butler responded in feeling terms . The toast of "The P . M . 's" was then given , and duly
acknowledged . " The Officers of the Lodge " was responded to by Bro , G . Baxter . Bro . Hedges , the Secretary of the Girls' Royal Masonic School , in response to the toast of "The Charities , " thanked the brethren for the kind manner in which they had received the toast and for coupling his name therewith , but said he was there as the guest of the lodge and not for the
purpose of begging assistance on behalf of the noble Institution he had the honour of being connected with . On the last occasion they required great help , and he was pleased to say that their W . M . had come forward and promised to do his best for the Girls'School . At the festival held 13 th May , 1 SS 5 , at which their W . M . was present as Steward , he ( Bro . Hedges ) was pleased when Bro . Bacon stated he had a large sum in hand which , before the
meeting terminated , amounted to the sum of , ( , 204 19 s ., a sum never before collected by a Norfolk Steward . He urged the brethren to emulate so good an example . He further urged their attention to the Boys' School , which was in great need of Stewards , the expenses of that Institution amounting to something like £ 13 , 000 to £ 14 , 0003 year . He was pleased to hear that there was a whisper at the other end of the room that their S . W ., Bro . Geo . Baxter , intended to
represent the lodge at the next Festival . The Masonic Charities , he observed , were never doing more than they were at the present time and were never more efficient ; the greatest care and the greatest judgment were exercised in the management , which , coupled with judicious economy , contributed to their success . He urged the brethren to greater exertions , that their province should be second to none in the country . Bro . Hedges concluded by thanking
them for their kind reception and for the attention they had paid to his remarks . Bro . H . G . Barwellalso responded to the toast . The concluding toasts were "The Treasurer , Bro . T . C . R . King , " and " The Secretary , Bro . Geo . Kersey , " "The Ladies , " and the Tyler ' s . Several songs and glees were rendered by Bros . I . H .

them all . It was but a small token as regarded its intrinsic value ; but when he said it was the first time within thc memory of the oldest member that a P . M . ' s jewel had been given to the retiring W . M ., he thought it would bear a special value in the eyes of their I . P . M . The members of the lodge need not be reminded of the eminent services Bro . Imbert-Terry had rendered to the Hope and Unity
Lodge ; whether as regarded * the excellency of his working , his personal courtesy , or his princely hospitality , he had laid such a claim upon their regard as would not soon be effaced from their memories . He trusted that Bro . Imbert-Terry would live many years to wear the jewel he now placed upon his breast , and that the lodge would long have the benefit of his presence and assistance .
Bro . Imbert-Terry said this presentation had taken him quite by surprise . He had taken a great interest in the Hope and Unity Lodge , and the only reward he had looked forward to had been to merit their esteem and regard . His year of office had been to him a most happy one , and he thanked them one and all for the way they had supported him , and for the great kindness and courtesy he had
received from them all , without a single exception . He should prize greatly the handsome jewel they had just given to him , and he trusted he should still be able to do something foJ the benefit of Lodge No . 214 .
