Maurice C Williams , was proceeded with , the ceremony being ably performed by the retiring W . M ., Bro . Nanson , assisted by Bro . Kekwick . The W . year as follows : Bros , H . Sawyer , S . W . ; George White , J . W . ; J . T . Liddell , S . D . ; W . P . Gibbings , J . D . ; A . J . Sendell , l . G . ; T . J . Richardson , Stwd . ; W . Other business having been transacted , the brethren , with a few additional visitors , including Bro . Shawyer , Skiddaw Lodge , and Bro . VV . Orman , adjourned to the County Hotel , where they partook of a banquet , provided
by Bro . Koster , manager of the hotel . The toast of "The Queen " having been duly honoured , The Worshipful Master proposed the toast of "The Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " remarking that he did not know whether when the Prince succeeded to the Throne he would be able to occupy the same position in the Craft as he now did , but he hoped that as long as he remained the Heir Apparent they would have him as the M . W . Grand Master of England .
The toast was honoured in the usual manner . "The Right Hon . the Earl of Bective , R . W . P . G . M ., " was next proposed by Bro . Cook in eulogistic terms , and he said he hoped to see Lord Bective at the Provincial Grand Lodge to be held at Kendal in the autumn . Bro . Sawyer proposed "The W . D . P . G . M ., Bro . L . F . B . Dykes , Esq ., and the rest of the Provincial Officers . "
Bro . Dykes had filled his position with credit to himself and the Craft , and he had worked himself into that high and responsible position by his devoted attention to Masonry . As to the Past Officers , he knew but little of them . He regretted that they did not seem to get a fair share of provincial honours in that district , but he hoped that by working more in unity , and trying to make the
lodge a little nearer to perfection , as they were trying to do in 310 , they would have more honours conferred upon them . He coupled with the toast the names of Bros . Court and Mason , who briefly responded . Bro . Nanson then proposed the toast of the evening , "The Health of the VV . M . " He said ha had carefully watched over the newly-elected W . M . ' s progress in
Freemasonry , and he could say he had assiduously attended to his duties , and he did not think that the Bective Lodge would , at the expiration of his year of office , say they could have found a better officer . The Worshipful Master , in response , said he thought he should have shown more of the wisdom of King Solomon if he had not accepted office this year , but he would
endeavour to fellow in the footsteps of those who had preceded him . _ Not only would he do that but he would endeavour to improve the position of the lodge , to increase its members , and to make the lodge stronger as representing Carlisle in the province . He concluded by expressing a hope that the officers who had been appointed that evening would assist him in the objects he had in view , and
asking that those brethren who had passed the chair would give him the benefit of their experience and instruction . The Worshipful Master next proposed " The Health of the I . P . M . " He said Bro . Nanson had carried out his duties during the past year very well indeed . They had been extremely fortunate in selecting him , as the lodge had increased in power and vigour since , and had made many
new members during his term of office , many of whom he was pleased to see present . Bro . Nanson appeared to him to be one who , through thick and thin , had done his utmost to promote the interests of the lodge and Freemasonry generally , and he had therefore the greater pleasure in proposing his health . At the same time he had the pleasure and honour of presenting to him a jewel , which he
hoped he would be proud of and would wear for a long time to come . The jewel was the usual one presented on similar occasions , and the inscription was as follows : " Presented by the members of the Bective Lodge on his retirement from office to Bro . C . J . Nanson , Past Master . " Bro . Kekwick proposed " The Past Masters of the Bective Lodge , and the rest of the Officers . " He had
noticed sometimes that Past Masters took little : interest in the lodge business , and he had wondered whether some Past Masters were not superannuated or paid off . He thought that Past Masters should still remain working members of a lodge for the instruction of the younger members . In speaking of Masonic Institutions , hesaid the Institution for Girls was one with which the lodge was connected , as it was founded about 1 G 0 years ago by the Duchess of Cumberland , and was called " The Cumberland Masonic

had attended every lodge meeting , with one exception , when he had been in Carlisle . "The W . M . of 310 and Visiting Brethren" was proposed , and it was responded to by Bros . T . Morant Compton and Shawyer , after which Bro . Pearson proposed " The Masonic Charities , " and explained the reason why the lodge had contributed so little to the Charities was owing to its havinir been started under
very difficult circumstances , and a call had been made upon members two or three times to keep the lodge going . They would be better able to subscribe to the Charities in the future , towards which money had already been subscribed . He thought that in a very short time they would have several votes for the Institutions . The Tyler ' s toast having been honoured , the company separated , having spent a very pleasant evening . Several capital songs were rendered during the evening .
