The Duke of Connaught has undertaken to preside at the festival dinner of the British Home for Incurables , to be held at Willis ' s Rooms , St . James ' s , on the 14 th proximo .
Bros . Augustus Harn ' sand H . Pettitt left London on Saturday evening last for Italy , where they will sketch the new melodrama it is intended to bring out at Drury Lane in the course of next autumn . We are glad to hear that the Metropolitan Board of Works have granted their certificate to the proprietor of the buildings in which is located "The Japanese Native
Village Exhibition . " It seems that the reports which appeared some few weeks back in the daily press , to the effect that thc said proprietor had been summoned before the Alagistrate at the Westminster Police Court , at the instance of thc said Board , and lined , has had a detrimental effect on the proprietors of the Japanese Exhibition , who had nothing whatever to do with the case or the
circumstances which led to it . It is only right , therefore , that this should be made known to the public , and vve are pleased to be able to lend a hand in securing the requisite publicity . The second annual ball in aid of the Lodge of Israel Benevolent Fund , will be held at the Cannon-street Hotel , on Tuesday , 30 th inst ., dancing to commence at
9 o clock . Bro . the Right Hon . the Lord Alayor , Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Evans , and Bro . Sheriff Clark and their ladies , have kindly promised to attend , and a very enjoyable evening is anticipated , as well as a handsome addition to the funds . A Dispensation has been granted by H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , M . W . G . M ., to allow Craft and Royal Arch clothing to be worn on the occasion .
Tickets may be obtained from Bro . Joseph Da Silva , 1 G 9 , Albion-road , Stoke Newington . A handsomely illuminated address was presented on the 13 th inst to Bro . Clement E . Stretton , P . P . G . S . W . Leicestershire and Rutland , P . G . Mark Sec , Leicestershire , & c , by deputations from the Coalville , VVigston , and other branches of the Amalgamated Railway Servants , in
token of their sympathy with him at the death of Mrs . Stretton , to whose many virtues and kindly feeling for others , especially such as might be in sorrow or distress , a handsome tribute of respect . Aloreover , Mrs . Stretton had , like her husband , taken a deep personal interest in the Society , and on that account the members were the more anxious to show their respect for her memory , Bro . Stretton very feelingly acknowledged the address .
J . AND \ V . TOLLEV'S "STANDARD" HAMMERLESS GUN . VVe have lately had an opportunity of inspecting Alessrs . J . and W . Tolley ' s ( of Pioneer Works , Birmingham , and 1 , Conduit-street , Regent-street ) '' 'Standard" hammerless gun , which is fitted with a most ingenious safety bolt , in the shape of a hook , which passes over each tumbler on
the gun being raised to full cock . These hooks are only withdrawn on the trigger being pulled , rendering the gun perfectly secure until the trigger is pulled . This gives the shooter an assurance of perfect safety and security we have never before experienced . VVe ought to mention that
no exertion whatever is required to cock the gun , as is the case in some other systems , the weight of the barrels themselves being sufficient to raise the tumblers to full cock . Want of space prevents us giving a fuller description of this gun ; but it is only justice to say that our trial of this beautiful weapon more than exceeded our expectations .
