the lodge could bestow ; and he felt certain that Bro . Bishop's future work would be equally satisfactory with his work in the past , and that he would perform the duties attached to the office of Alaster as efficiently as he had fulfilled all his other duties in the Wallington Lodge . The brethren knew perfectly well that whether he was called on or not , he was perfectly able to do the work . He vvas sure that he was expressing the feelings of all present when he
prayed that the G . A . O . T . U . might give Bro . Bishop such health and strength that he might have a happy year of office , and work to his own credit and the satisfaction of the lodge . Bro . Bishop said , in reply , that he had to thank the I . P . M . and the brethren very much for the kind manner in which his health had been proposed and received . But he rose with diffidence and pleasure to address them—with
diffidence lest he should be unable to carry out the duties of his position to their satisfaction—and with pleasure because he was well assured of their kindly feeling . Those who knew him knew that he vvould endeavour to do his best . He was particularly proud to occupy that position—to be in that chair—for one especial reason , which was that he happened to be the first initiate in the Wallington Lodge , who had had the proud satisfaction to attain the chair . It
was hut a short four years ago smte he was vmtvatcd in that lodge , and although he did dream of the possibilty that he might some day to reach that position he had not the faintest expectation of doing' it so soon . He had to thank not only those who had elected him , but those who had preceded him , because there vvere some who by reason of seniority ought to have been in the position he now held , and he felt that he owed it to their kindness as well as to
the vote of the Iodge that he was now in the chair . That he had met with the greatest kindness it was possible for a Mason to meet with in that lodge was a foregone conclusion . From the very first evening when he joined the Craft his experiences of the Wallington Lodge had been pleasant : he had spent many happy hours there . The results of his joining Freemasonry had surpassed his most sanguine expectations ; and he trusted that if he vvas
granted life and strength to go through his year of office lie should be able to lay down his gavel and pass it to his successor with satisfation to the lodge as well as to himself The W . M . said that he had already remarked that the further they got down the list of toasts the nearer home they got . The next toast vvas that of "The Visitors , " which brought them very near home indeed . They all knew that a great portion of their friendship and Alasonic
acquaintance vvere made in the Iodge , but he thought that a great many of those vvere cemented and even adorned by the pleasant reunions they had at the table afterwards . He thought it might perhaps be a little to the detriment of human value , but he believed we never felt so agreeably towards our fellow man as when we have our legs under the same mahogany with him . He could have wished that they had had a larger number of visitors that evening , he
had himself been disappointed of two . But still they had a goodly gathering , and what they lacked in quantity they made up in quality . Few or many , however , the members of the lodge gave them very hearty greeting ; they vvere pleased when old friends came again among them and they were pleased too to welcome new friends . They had among them Bro . Smith , of the Confidence Lodge , No . 193 ; Bro . Saunders , Zetland Lodge , No . 515 ; Bro . Davies , Langton
Lodge , No . 1673 ; Bro . Allan , Inhabitants Lodge , No . 153 J Bro . Pocock , Burgoyne Lodge , No . 902 ; Bro . Potts , New Northern Lodge , No . 212 S ; Bro . Vickers , Stewart Lodge , No . 1630 ; Bro . Smith , United Mariners Lodge , No . 30 ; Bro . W . W . Morgan and Bro . E . Massey . It was not necessary to make any moving appeal to the feelings of the brethren of the lodge to support that toast , because they always received it very warmly . With the
toast he would couple the names of Bros . Smith and Potts . Bros . Smith , Potts , and Pocock replied for the visitors . The Worshipful Master next proposed "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Baldwin , and the rest of the Past Masters of the Lodge . " They were not , he said , an old lodge , and therefore had not a long roll of Past Alasters . One of their Past Masters was very far away at the other side of the world , and another who was present in the
lodge , was unable to remain for the banquet ; but they had three veryjeffective Past Alasters of the Wallington Lodge —Bros . Baldwin , Horsey , and Pile—and if it vvere humanly possible that Bro . Baldwin could could fail him in the hour of need , he had only to look beyond him to find a Mason of even greater experience , he could not wish for better supporters than Bros . Baldwin , Horsey , and Pile . The brethren all knew them , and all who knew them respected
and admired them . He would ask Bros . Baldwin and Pile to respond . Bro . Baldwin returned his sincere thanks to the W . M . for the kind manner in which he had proposed the toast , and the brethren for the cordiality with which they had received it . After some further remarks Bro . Baldwin said there was one thing which vvas always required of a Alaster , which was to act up to those three great principles
of Freemasonry—brotherly love , relief , and truth . It vvas not always that vve could carry out those principles as we could wish , but vve could all strive to do it . He had striven to do it , and thanked the brethren for overlookinghis shortcomings . He thanked them too for the very handsome jewel they had given him , which would remind him of a very pleasant and happy Mastership . Tlieir W . AL was going up as a Steward to the Festival of the Boys' School
and he ( Bro . Baldwin ) had intended to refer to it in Iodge and take their vote for £ 5 5 s . to be placed on his list . He had overlooked it however , but he hoped the money would still be forthcoming . Bro . Pile also responded . Other toasts , including "The Masonic Charities , " "The Officers of the Lodge , " & c , were honoured , and then the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a close .

Sudlow , he said that he vvas highly pleased and delighted to find thc work carried on so efficiently under the able and kind Preceptor , who was evidently following his work with that Masonic love which did the heart of every one good who witnessed it . The Emulation Lodge Committee vvas very jealous of their working , for they could not allow any lodge to announce their working unless it was correctly so . He should have great pleasure in carrying back a highly satisfactory report .
He hoped they would go on and make every one perfect , and still work with thc precision he had been pleased to witness , besides that good , loving feeling which seemed to bind them so closely together .
