Provincial Meetings.

mously carried . He had every reason to think it would be so . The executive had an immense deal of work to do . There were members no doubt present who recollected their late Bro . Clerke , and who knew the loss the Alasonic world had sustained by his death . He should like to say a word too about the Grand Secretary , who had had a very difficult task to perform . He was , however , thoroughly earnest and zealous and would as time went on ripen into

an excellent and admirable Grand Secretary . Not having many home ties he had plenty of time to visit lodges , and he was a most excellent Mason . Bro . Rev . T . S . Curteis , in proposing "The R . W . P . G . AL , Earl Amherst , " said the toast was always one of the foremost toasts of the evening—their respected and beloved Provincial Grand Alaster . He had no difficulty in proposing such a toast . They had heard from their Deputy

Provincial Grand Alaster a statement to the fact of there being so many candidates and so very few places to be filled in Grand Lodge , and also the reasonable probability of those places being extended in number . Lord Amherst had been Provincial Grand Alaster for 32 years over the Province of Kent . They were all proud of him , both as a Kentish man and a man of Kent . The Province of Kent , too , was certainly at the top of the Masonic tree . To whom was that

due ? He ventured to think it was due in no small degree to the knowledge , the tact , and manners of their Provincial Grand Alaster . Not only had the number of lodges vastly increased during those 32 years , but the principles , the very backbone of Masonry—Charity—had enormously increased . On the occasion when their Provincial Grand Alaster presided as a Kentish man over the Royal Alasonic Benevolent Institution Kentish Alasons subscribed most liberally .

The toast having been most cordially drunk , Bro . Cripps said he had taken the liberty , after consultation with their W . AL , of dividing the next toast , inasmuch as there was one name which stood so far above the rest of the persons named . He did not think it right in an assembly like that , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master should not have his health proposed singly . There was no toast which was ever received with more real esteem and affection

amongst Kentish Alasons than that of their Deputy Provincial Grand Master , with whose presence they were honoured , not only in the lodge , but at the banquet . When he attained to the honour of wearing a Deacon ' s collar in the Grand Lodge of England , every Kentish Alason felt that honour personally , and as gratified as though the honour had been conferred upon themselves . It was a mystery to him how the Prov . Grand Alaster got through the

enormous work thrown upon his shoulders , and they could only hope that he would have health and strength to continue to perform them ; but he had for his right hand a brother with whom he could place his trust and confidence , a brother whose health he now proposed . Bro . Smith Eastes , who was enthusiastically received , said he felt extremely grateful and was pleased that he had come to Tunbridge Wells in order to be present once more

at the Pantiles Lodge . He was sure it would rejoice the heart of Lord Amherst when he reported to him how admirably thc work had been done that day . He could thoroughly believe that during the past five years every effort had been given towards the increase of the lodge , special care being taken to select eligible candidates , which was most important . As Bro . Curteis had said , they in the Province of Kent stood pre-eminent amongst the lodges of the kingdom

for doing its duties thoroughly in connection with the Charities of which they were so proud . He felt very great interest in the Boys' School , and now that he would be retiring from the Board , he hoped an effort would be made to find a Kentish brother to take his place . He believed their Provincial Grand Treasurer , Bro . Russell , would do so , and he was thoroughly well versed in the whole machinery , They were likely to have a new lodge before long at

Broadstairs . Everything had been working very smoothly throughout the province . Again , he desired to say how delighted he vvas to be present to witness the admirable working , and he congratulated the I . P . M . especially upon thc splendid way in which he had performed his duties . He wished the W . AL health and happiness during his year of office , and that he would have plenty of work to do . He wished every prosperity to the Pantiles Lodge , and he

trusted it would not be another live years before he would be amongst them again . Bro . Colls proposed " The Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " to which Bto . Cripps responded , expressing ttie -ptaaswrc he Ml aV being pvtsert . Bro . Sidney Wilmot also responded in a forcible speech , in whicli he p leaded the cause of Charity and those Institutions of which they were so justly proud .

Bro . Duret also responded , and he also pleaded for support of their Institutions . Bro . Grunwell proposed " 'The Health of the VV . M ., Bro . Josiah Willmot , " who , after replying , gave " The Installing Matter and Past Alasters , " to which Bros . Grunwell , Tom Ryder , and Stevenson replied . Iiro . Sidney Wilmot proposed "The Visitors , " coupling with the toast the names of liros . Calway , Anscombe , and

Dodd ( the latter of whom he described as the grandfather of the Pantiles Lodge ) , each of whom suitably responded , Bro . Dodd remarking upon the excellent working of the ledge , which he predicted would be very soon one of the best lodges in the province . Bro . Ryder proposed " The Secretary and Treasurer , "

who responded , and the VV . M . proposed "The Officers , " the Senior and Junior Wardens responding . 'The proceedings closed with the Tyler ' s toast . During the evening some capital songs , duets , and glees were sung b y Bros . Howis , Skinner , and Oliver , Iiro . Starmer efficiently accompanying . They were cordially thanked for their services .
