AL , the representative of the lodge on the Provincial Charity Committee , who reported the result of the operations of that organisation during the past year , when the Province

The lodge having been duly closed , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where they sat down to an elegant banquet , under the presidency of the newly-elected VV . M . Before the ordinary toast list was reached , the VV . AI . rose to explain that the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Sir VV . T . Alarriott , ( J . C , M . brief but graceful terms , proposed Sir William 5 health , thanking him heartily for his attendance , and regretting that he was compelled to leave the brethren . listening to the address of the VV . M ., and congratulated the Earl of Sussex Lodge upon having such an excellent W . AL as Bro . C VV . Hudson . Bro . Sir VV . T . and the Craft" and "TheAI . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , " proposed " The Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " to which Bro . J . C . Parkinson , P . G . D ., responded . The Worshipful Master next gave "The M . W . Prov . G . AL , H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught . " He said the brethren , two nights since , had the great pleasure of hearing the Duke himself express the interest he took in the Province of Sussex , and he ( Bro . Hudson ) was sure they

greatly appreciated his visit . Reminding the brethren that the Provincial Grand Master had consecrated the Earl _ of Sussex Lodge , he said the Duke , in chatting with him , expressed his regret that he was not able to be with them that evening , but that if he could find time to visit the Craft lodges , he hoped to visit the Earl of Sussex Lodge . Even when absent from the province , the Duke , he said , was with them in spirit , and took the deepest and most continuous interest in the Province of Sussex .

Bro . G . W . E . Loder , ALP ., proposed " The W . Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . the Right Hon . Sir VV . T . Marriott , Q . C , M . P ., P . G . Steward , and the rest of the Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " Regretting that the Deputy Provincial Grand Master had been compelled to leave so early , he said he regarded Sir William Alarriott as a model and perfect Deputy Provincial Grand

Alaster . He was assiduous in his attention to his duties , and was particularly happy in proposing or responding to a toast . The Present and Past Officers of the province were , he said , the backbone of Freemasonry in Sussex , and the excellence of their work had made the province famous . In Bro . J . P . Slingsby Roberts , Prov . S . G . W ., he recognised an ardent Freemason , who occupied a unique position , for

he was not only Senior Warden of his lodge , but also Senior Warden of the province . Bro . J . P . Slingsby Roberts , in response , thanked Bro . Loder for the kind manner in which he had proposed the toast ; it was a compliment , he said , not to be forgotten . To respond for the Provincial Grand Officers was not an easy task , for they were but two days old . They were not

yet able to talk , they could only prattle . He could , however , assure the brethren that they had set out with the determination of doing their du ; y and keeping up the dignity of the province . Bro . B . Burfield , Prov . A . G . Sec , also responded , remarking that he had entered upon his ninth year as Prov . Assistant Grand Secretary , and that he and the remaining Provincial Grand Officers were desirous of carrying out

their duties satisfactorily , and of reflecting credit not only upon themselves , but upon the province . Bro . Alfred King , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Worshipful Master , " said few toasts ecjualled in dignity that which he had the pleasure of submitting to them . He said he need say little of Bro . C . VV . Hudson , for he was full of years and Masonic experience , and had worked

energetically for the Alasonic Charities . He was sure the dignity and working of the lodge were safe in his hands , The W . M . on rising to respond , ! was received with enthusiasm . Heartily thanking Bro . King for the kind manner in which he had proposed the toast and the brethren for the heartiness with which they had received it , he said he would do his utmost to maintain the position and

prestige of the Earl of Sussex Lodge and vvould strive to emulate the good examples of his predecessors . He said he was initiated into Freemasonry by his father 24 years ago , and he well remembered the late Bro . VV . Marchant , in congratulating him , remarking that he would never regret the step he had taken , adding that a good Freemason could not be a bad man . He looked back with

pleasure upon his Alasonic life , and was gratified that , working with others , he had been able to assist the Masonic Charities . The W . AI . next gave "The Visitors , " to which Bros . G . Randell , T . J . Railing , G . A . Alansell , and J . AL AIcLeod responded , the last-named congratulating the Sussex brethren upon their excellent work for the Alasonic Institutions , particularly during the last two years , and entreating

them to still do all they could for the Boy's School . The W . M . propose ! "The Past Masters and the Officers of the Lodge , " specially referring to the perfect work of the Secretary , who , with Bros . A . King , 14 . Clowes , and R . Percy Clowes , acknowledged the toast .

The remaining toasts were "The Initiate , " to which Bro . John Haynes responded , and the Tyler's toast . as W . AL for the ensuing year , the ceremony being impressively performed by Bro . A . King , the retiring W . M . The VV . M . then appointed his officers as follow , those present being invested with the insignia of their respective offices : Bros . A . King , I . P . M . and Org . ; J . P . Slingsby Roberts , S . VV . ; R . Percy Clowes , J . W . ; R . Clowes , Treas . ; C . Marshall , S . D . ; Gerald E . Beddington , J . D . ; J . l > . Knight , l . G . ; R . Pidcock and ti . Collison , Stewards ; and

H . H . Hughes , lyler . Bro . R . Clowes was appointed to serve on the Charities' Committee . Bro . A . King was presented with a Past Alaster ' s gold jewel in appreciation uf the able manner in which he had carried out the duties of W . M . The business of the lodge closed with the initiation of Mr . John Haynes , the ceremony being impressively performed by the VV . AI ., Bro . C . VV . Hudson .

C , M . P ., Past Grand Steward , was compelled to leave to catch his train . He therefore , in

brief but graceful terms , proposed Sir William 5 health , thanking him heartily for his attendance , and regretting that he was compelled to leave the brethren . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , in responding , expressed his regret that he was compelled to leave , and also that he had been unable to reach thc lodge in time to see all the working . He had , however , been delighted in

listening to the address of the VV . M ., and congratulated the Earl of Sussex Lodge upon having such an excellent W . AL as Bro . C VV . Hudson . Bro . Sir VV . T . Alarriott was warmly applauded on retiring from the room . 'The customary loyal and Alasonic toasts were afterwards dul y honoured . 'I he Worshipful Alaster , after submitting " The ( Jueen

and the Craft" and "TheAI .

During the evening pleasing vocal selections were contributed by Miss Alice Holman and Miss Edith Hands , the duties of accompanist being in the able hands of Bro . VV . N . Roe P . P . G . O .
