Masonic Notes and Queries .
6 * 5 o ] PREMIER MASONIC PROVINCE , & c . I thank Bro . Hughan for his notice of my query about the Carpenters' Arms Lodge . He rarely attempts without some practical result , and in this case his opinion is so far satisfactory to me , that it corroborates ( though I admit proof is wanting to some extent ) my own researches . It is strange , however , that the house should be known as the
Three Compasses ( which is , of course , the Carpenters Arms ) , and is yet described in an important Masonic pamphlet under the latter designation . But I cannot find any other lodge at which the speech could have been delivered . The Three Compasses appears in Eman Bowen ' s list , 1723 , and Pine's list , 1725 , both of which are given in Bro . Gould ' s "Four Old Lodpes ; " but lodges at this early period are very difficult to fix definitely . J . RAMSDEN RILEY . 651 ]
AN OLD GRAND LODGE CERTIFICATE . Bro . Sadler is doing good service by the publication of such documents as given in No . 649 , and he may be sure his zeal is appreciated . I have in my possession a certificate similar ; but not quite so old , and , although we ought to discover others even back to the end of 1755 , they flo not turn up . I agree with Bro . Sadler that this may be the oldest in existence ( as I thought mine ) , and hail its
appearance with much satisfaction . Mine differs only in the date and wording of the certificate . It states : " There are to certify that Bro . was made a Mason , and admitted to the Third Degree of Masonry as appears by the Register l . errunto annexed of the Lodge No . , regularly constiluted , " & c , "hereunto annexed , " in Bro . Pinna's afterwards , being , of course , omitted . It also reads : "Given under the Seal of the Grand Lodge at London the iSth August , A . L . 57 S 9 , . D . 17 S 9 .
" WM . WHITE , Grand Secretary . " At the bottom of the certificate , andjn one line across , is : " See the New Edition of the Book of Constitutions , page 2 G 5 ; printed in the year 17 S 4 , " I have always considered mine remarkable for the absence of " Free and Accepted Masons " in any part of it . 1 should be extremely grateful if Bro . Pinna would send me his certificate for a day or two
that I may patch up mine , which hung up for many years in sn old closet , and when I found it it was covered with myriads of little brown insects . 1 took these at first to be brown patches produced by damp and age ; but the microscope revealed the fact that very soon the parchment would have been all destroyed . So it must be very different in c indition to Bro . Pinna ' s . The body of the certificate and the seal are perfect . J . RAMSDEN RILEY .

received . In proposing "The Grand Officers , " the Worshipful Master briefly referred to the merits of that distinguished body , and expressed his pleasure in coupling Bro . Case's name with the toast . Bro . J . March Case , P . G . D ., after sincerely thanking the brethren for the flattering reception accorded the
toast , said that it gave him great pleasure to respond for the Grand Officers , for they individually rendered good service to the Craft , and always had its best interests at heart . The Pro G . G . M ., the Earl of Lathom , was always ready to use his best endeavours for the good of the Craft , and frequently attended Grand Lodge . The Grand Officers were at all times pleased to visit the lodges , for they were always received wtth hospitality—to which rule the Fidelity Lodge was no exception . "The Health of the VV . M . " was next given by Bro . Larcome , who said that , as the I . P . M ., it was his honour
and privilege to propose this important toast , but as brevity was the order of the evening , his remarks would necessarily be few . Bro . Squire had belonged to the lodge for many years , and by his kind and genial disposition had gained the esteem of the brethren . He had ably performed the duties of the various offices he had held , and with regard to his capabilities for fulfilling the duties of the chair , he was sure the lodge was safe in the W . M . Their
newlyinstalled Master was the son of the oldest Past Master of the lodge , and would , therefore , have the benefit of his advice , both fatherly and brotherly . Bro . J . VV . Squire , W . M ., in reply , said that he thanked them from the bottom of his heart for the enthusiastic manner in which they had received the toast of his health . He assured them that his heart and soul were in the lodge , and if he failed to carry out the duties successfully , it
would not be for lack of energy . He had looked forward for many years to the time when he should occupy the chair , and now he had attained that position , he would do his best to carry out the ceremonies in an effectual manner . The toast of "The Visitors" was next proposed by the W . M ., who remarked that the Fidelity Ledge usually had a large number of visitors present , and the toast ' always
met with the heartiest approval . Bro . J . G . Green , P . Prov . G . D . Hunts , tendered his sincere thanks on behalf of the visitors for their hospitable reception . He had always heard that the ritual was performed well in London , and he assured the members of the Fidelity Lodge that he should carry some pleasant recollections back with him to the country , for he had never seen the ceremony of installation performed in an abler
manner . Bro . Ingram , P . M . 373 , also responded , and , after thanking the lodge for the hospitality shown to the visitors , said that it was extremely gratifying to see the ceremonies carried out in the excellent way in which they had witnessed them that evening . "The Past Masters" was next given by the W . M ., who said he considered that the P . M . 's were the mainstay
of a lodge , and it was only when he arrived at the position he now held that he fully appreciated the support to be relied on . There was always a large muster of Past Masters in that lodge , to all of whom they were deeply indebted . He wished to couple with this toast the name of the Installing Master , Bro . Cordwell . That brother had performed the Installation ceremony on at least two previous occasions , and was always ready to assist when
required . He ( the VV . M . ) should also call upon Bro . Low , P . M ., Treasurer , to respond . Bro . Cordwell , P . M ., P . P . G . R . Middx ., replied , and said the VV . M . was quite correct when he observed that the Past Masters took a great interest in the lodge , for if they could at any time do anything for the good of the Fidelity Lodge they would only be too pleased to do it . Bro . Low , P . M ., Treas ., also replied , and observed that
the health of the Past Masters was always given and received in the same hearty manner , and with the greatest amount of good feeling . They were at all times ready to use their best endeavours for the good of the lodge , and were rewarded if they received the sincere and hearty thanks of the brethren . The next toast proposed was "The Health of the I . P . M . " The W . M . in bringing it before the brethren
referred to the excellent manner in which Bro . Larcome had performed the duties of the chair during the past year , and said that it afforded him great pleasure to know that he would have such a good Mason on his left in the lodge . Bro . Larcome returned his hearty thanks for the kind remarks of the VV . M ., and for the manner in which the brethren had received the toast . During his year of office
he had endeavoured to carry out the duties to the best of his ability . He should be only too happy to assist the W . M . if required , and sincerely trusted he would have a successful year . "The Senior and Junior Wardens and Officers of the Lodge" was next proposed by the VV . M ., who said thathc considered himself very fortunate in having such an efficient staff of officers . He was well acquainted with the excellent
manner in which they performed their work , and if the opportunity was afforded them would carry out the duties connected with the various ceremonies to the complete satisfaction of thc brethren . Bros . Block , S . VV ., and Weeks , J . VV ., respondsd in suitable terms , assuring the W . M . that the officers would
do their best to deserve the kind remarks of the W . M . The Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a close . A pleasant programme of music was carried out under the direction of the Organist , Bro . Hart , who was ably assisted by Bro . R . J . Ward , Mr . Carlyle , Miss B . Colnaghi , and Miss M . Horton .
TEMPLE LODGE ( No . 101 ) . —The installation meeting of this old and popular lodge was held at the Ship and Turtle , Leadenhall-street , on Tuesday , the 2 nd inst ., when there was a goodly muster of brethren and visitors , under the presidency of the retiring W . M ., Bro . E . J . Altman , who was well supported by his officers . Amongst the visitors was Bro . H . Clarke , P . D . G . M . of Columbia . The lodge was opened in form , and after the transaction of
some routine business , which included the adoption of a very satisfactory report from the Auditors , Bro . T . A . Bullock was presented for the benefit of installation , the ceremony being very ably performed by the retiiing W . M . On the readmission of the brethren , the newly-installed Master was saluted with the customary honours , and invested his oflicers for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . E , J . Altman , I . P . M . ; E . L . Lardner , S . VV . ; I . Round
J . VV . ; H . J . Reynolds , P . M ., Sec ; J . Bond , P . M ., Treas . ; J . Beard , S . D . ; R . Wilson , J . D . ; C . Bagley , I . G . ; II . Hastelow , D . C ; F . VVilliams , W . S . ; and R . Potter , Tyler . A handsome P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Altman on his retirement , as a mark of esteem , and in recognition of the valuable services rendered to the lodge . At the conclusion of the business , the brethren partook of a sumptuous banquet , provided in a style for which Bro . Painter ' s first-class establishment has long been proverbial .
Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
The W . M ., in happy terms , gave " The Oueen and the Craft , " "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the PrirTce of Wales , " these toasts being followed by that of "The Pro Grand Master and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . "
Bro . H . Clarke , P . D . G . M . of Columbia , in responding , eulogised the Temple Lodge , both for its traditions in the past and its prosperity at the present time . He also spoke highly of the manner in which the work had been carried out in the lodge room by the retiring and newly-installed Masters and the officers generally . The I . P . M ., in proposing "The W . M ., " alluded to the
creditable manner in which Bro . Bullock had passed through the minor offices , and expressed his firm conviction that he would discharge the duties of the chair with credit to himself , and with satisfaction to the brethren . The Worshipful Master , in responding , said he must regard it as a most auspicious occasion for any incoming Master to be supported so well by the officers and brethren
generally of the lodge . His convictions were at least equal to his hope that their distinguished visitors would leave them that evening with pleasant impressions formed by the work they had witnessed at the Temple Lodge . For himself he regretted exceedingly that his experience as a Mason , in his own opinion , scarcely fitted him for the exalted position to which it had pleased the brethren to
elect him ; but he could not but be gratified with the feelings of unanimity with which that honour had been conferred upon him . Their distinguished visitor , Bro , Hyde Clarke , was singularly fitted by his experience to judge of the merits of any lodge which he might visit . He had , in his capacity as Past District G . M ., visited the four quarters of the globe , and the complimentary way in which he had
spoken of the work of the Temple Lodge was most gratifying to himself , as it must have been to all the officers and brethren present . He hoped he might realise the wish which had been expressed by the proposer of the toast that he might enjoy a happy and prosperous year of office , and promised to do his utmost for the welfare of thc Temple Lodge .
The VVorshipful Master then proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , and in doing so he paid a highly deserved compliment to Bro . Altman for the able way in which he had performed the installing ceremony . The toast was suitably acknowledged by Bro . Altman , I . P . M ., and for the hearty welcome extended to the visitors , Bro . Ansell , P . G . D . of the Grand Lodge of
Turkey ; Bros . Capt . Pash , W . M ., and Capt . Durrant , of the Fitzroy Lodge responded . The W . M . coupled the toasts of "The P . M . ' s " and " The Sec . and Treas ., " for whichP . M . 's J . Bond and Flack replied . The VVorshipful Master , in proposing " The Officers of the Lodge , " made happy allusion to the admirable way in which the S . VV ., Bro . P . Lardner , had discharged the
duties of his office on all occasions , and he congratulated the lodge in anticipation upon the Mason whom he hoped and trusted would next year succeed him . Bro . Lardner having responded , the list was appropriately closed by the Tyler .
During the evening there were given some excellent songs and recitations , amongst those who contributed to the enjoyment of the company , being Bros . Frank Williams , H . J . Reynolds , P . M . ; E . Lardner , S . W . ; A . Beard , L . Temple , Birkett , and others , and a most enjoyable evening was passed .
