lodge was always proud of . Theirs was a very small lodge , only numbering about 25 , but there was always a large attendance of visitors . A distinguished visitor once asked him , "Where are the members ? " The same remark would apply on the present occasion , for they were lost among the visitors . He hoped they had all enjoyed themselves , and that they would be able to look back with pleasure on the short time spent at that lodge . With this
toast he coupled the names of Bro . Gen . Laurie , G . M . of Nova Scotia , whom he was specially pleased to see , and Bros . Philbrick , G . Reg ., and the Rev . VV . W . Martin , ' VV . M . 1460 . Bro . Gen . Laurie , G . M . of Nova Scotia , in re ^ p ly , said that there were times when one regretted that ' one had climbed the ladder so high . The W . M . had imposed on him the duty of responding on behalf of the large array of
visitors present , and as a soldier he would do his best . His early associations were in connection with that Ward , for his uncle was an Alderman of Aldersgate Ward long before some of the brethren had assumed the position they now hold , and possibly before some had come into the world at all . The Lord Mayor had alluded to the deep interest taken by preceding Lord Mayors in the Craft , and the high positions many had occupied . He had heard that
there were many points of resemblance between the Corporation and the Craft . The principal of these was that they both assisted materially to relieve the distressed and carry on the great work of Charity . The next was the profuse hospitality displayed by both , and which was fully exemplified in the excellent entertainment with which the visitors had been provided that evening . The Craft and the Corporation both had a contempt for everything that
was base and low , and their aims were the same , for they both upheld that which was good and true . These were a few points of resemblance , but as he feared he was intruding on the brethren , he concluded by thanking the lodge in the name of the visitors for their hearty reception . Bro : F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , G . Reg ., also reponded , and on the part of the guests thanked the brethren for the great kindness and hospitality so abundantly
bestowed upon them , and which they now stood willingly to acknowledge . The lodge , though small , had had the treat of witnessing a grand success , resulting from its great kindness and the general feeling of unanimity displayed . That meeting was one of the grand features of the Order for it brought together many who were associated outside Masonry , but all of whom had the welfare of the Craft at heart . It showed how wide was its power
for it also drew together those from foreign lodges . Bro . Rev . W . W . Martin , W . M . 1460 , followed , and desired to express his grateful thanks tor the hospitality received . The W . M . of the Aldersgate Lodge was honoured and respected by the members of the Thames Valley Lodge , of which he was the I . P . M ., and it was well represented amongst the visitors that evening . "The P . M . ' s" was then proposed by the VV . M ., who
said he could safely say that that lodge was fortunate in having such P . M . ' s , for they spared neither time nor trouble . He was glad to say that they were all present that night . He could say many things in favour of their esteemed Immediate Past Master , but . he had requested him to refrain from doing so ; but he should couple his name with this toast . Bro . W . H . Froom , I . P . M ., in reply , sincerely thanked
the W . M . for the way in which he had brought this toast to the notice of the brethren , and the brethren for the reception accorded it . The _ P . M . 's had always desired to do all they could for the benefit of the lodge , and would render all the assistance in their power to help the W . M . As I . P . M . he had been making enquiries to learn the nature of his duties , and had ascertained that it was his duty to assist the W . M . He was not sure whether the assistance was to be
rendered before or after the lodge ; but he would do all he could to support him whenever occasion required . "The Officers of the Lodge" was the next toast given by the W . M ., who said that he considered himself very fortunate in being able to reappoint all his officers . They were all well acquainted with their respective duties , and he felt sure that he could rely upon them to give him all the assistance in their power , and thus help to make his year of
office a successful one . He had much pleasure in calling upon Bros . E . Anderton , S . VV ., and J . Renals , S . D ., to respond . Bro . E . Andenon , S . VV ., after thanking the W . M ., in the name of the officers , for his kind remarks respecting the toast , observed that he had had the pleasure of responding to it on several 'previous occasions . The officers had seen with interest and admiration the zeal the W . M . had thrown
into all he did , and it was with great pleasure that they offered him their hearty congratulations at being installed in the presence of such a distinguished assembly of brethren . Bro . J . Renals , S . D ., who followed , said that as he only occupied the . J . VV . ' s chair pro tem ., he did not anticipate being called upon to respond to this toast . He could only return the hearty thanks of the officers , who would support their Worshipful Master to the best of their ability ,
for he was one of the kindest hearted men it was possible to meet with . 'The W . M ., in proposing the next toast—that of " The Treasurer and Secretary "—said that it was the last , but not by any means least . Bro . Brookman was one of the first initiates of the lodge , and had worked up through the various offices ; had passed through the chair , and now held the position of 'Treasurer . He would now refer to their
esteemed Secretary . Some time ago , the duties connected with that office became so heavy , that he the ( W . M . ) relieved him from them . But when the brethren required him to go through the chair , Bro . the Rev . Dr . Brette came forwnrd and kindly consented to again fill the post of Secretary . He could only say that in their Treasurer and Secretary they had two good oflicers , and no lodge could possibly have better .
Bro . Brookman , P . M ., Treas ,, in responding , said that he happened to be one of the first initiates , as the VV . M . had observed , and he was the first initiate to reach the chair . The office might have been bestowed upon some other brother , but the lodge in its wisdom conferred it on him , and as he learnt that it was unanimous , hc gladly accepted the
post . The position was previously held by one who is a good philanthropist—he referred to Bro . Allcroft—and as they had elected him ( Bro . Brookman ) to succeed him , he felt most grateful . It was a great pleasure to sit in the lodge next to Bro . Dr . Brette , and he assured the Worshipful Master and brethren that he would endeavour to do Ws duty as long as the lodge funds were entrusted to his care .

Bro . the Rev . Dr . P . H . E . Brette , P . Grand Chaplain Middlesex , P . M ., Honorary Secretary , also responded , and , after returning thanks , said that he had been trying for some time to . put his light out , but unsuccessfully , for first he had to reply as Past Master , then' as Chaplain , and now he was called upon as Secretary . He had now the opportunity of saying in public , what he had said in private—that he had resumed the duties of
Secretary as a work of love , as he knew that it was the unanimous wish that Bro . Jolliffe should occupy the chair . While their W . M . occupied his present position he ( Bro . Brette ) would do his duty , and use his utmost endeavours for the good of the lodge . The Tyler ' s toast concluded a very esrjoyable and successful evening . Bro . R . Raynham , of St . Paul ' s Cathedral , had charge
of the musical arrangements , and under his guidance a most excellent programme was spread over the evening , the songs , & c , selected , being of a high class character ; while the vocalists , Bros . J . Hodges , A . L . Fryer , Robert De Lacy , and W . Winn , from St . Paul ' s choir , with Masters Humm and Lewis , two of the choir boys , acquitted themselves most successfully , the singing of the boys in particular being quite a treat to listen to .

installing a VV . M . into the chair of the Coborn Lodge , and his confidence that the lodge would not suffer in the hands of the ruler they had unanimously elected to preside over them . In giving "The Masonic Charities , " the Worshipful Master stated that he had , as the brethren knew , taken a great interest in Charity in the Craft , and he hoped that
when he and Bro . Green represented the lodge at the Festival of the R . M . B . I ., they would be well supported by the members . Bro . J . Terry replied , and after drawing attention to the requirements of the Boys' and Girls' Schools , pleaded eloquently and earnestly for the Institution which he represented .

partaken of , which gave great satisfaction , and showed Bro . Hart to be a master of the art of catering for the varied requirements of the brethren . " The Visitors " were heartily welcomedand Bro . Ford
, P . P . G . J . W . South Wales , specially responded , urging upon the brethren the advantages to be derived from attending the lodge of instruction . He owed the great advances he had made the last 10 years in Masonry to the fact that he had studied diligently in lodges of instruction , and when business took him from London to South Wales
he had been enabled to open up a new sphere of usefulness , and his labours had been received with much appreciation in South Wales , he having had the honour of filling several Grand Lodge offices , and had been voted a handsome jewel for his services in the lodges of instruction in that district .
Bro . Stephens , P . M ., being called upon , thanked the brethren for their hearty and cordial reception . He had been very pleased to see the condition of the lodge after an absence of about two years . Their ceremonial working was excellent , and he quite expected it would be from the fact of meeting their officers and brethren at the various lodges of instruction . He congratulated them upon their
choice of a W . M ., as it was plain to all they were fully justifying their actim in electing him to the chair by their loyal support in the lodge at the banquet table and as their Steward by their large subscriptions to his list . Some excellent singing , and a fine reading by an old histrionic brother , Bro . G . J . King , greatly improved the tone of the meeting , and a highly agreeable evening was passed .

, P . P . G . J .
