Liverpool . — Merchomti Lodge ( No . 294 ) . —The monthly meeting of this Lodge took place on Tuesday , the 9 th of March , at the Royal Hotel , Dale-street . There was an unusually large attendance of the Brethren , and among the visitors were
the following : —Bros . Win . Wadham , No . 971 ; Wrn . T . May , No . 971 ; Thos . Lewin , No . 701 ; H . Worrail , Lafayette , Cincinnati , U . S . ; J . C . Carver , No . 245 ; Jno . Pepper , P . M . No . 310 ; M . H . Williams , No . 245 ; Wm . Blacklin , No . 310 , & c . After the initiation of Mr . William Vera on Kearne , and the passing of two Brethren , the W . M ., Bro . Martin CondlifT , called the attention of the Lodge to the by-laws , which had undergone some slight alteration by the committee recently appointed for the purpose ; and upon the emendations meeting with approval ,
to pass the same , which was accordingly done . The W . M . then proceeded to read a number of applications for relief , upon which several of the Brethren inquired whether the applicants were known , and said it was desirable that promiscuous cases should be inquired into by a committee formed for the purpose . Bro . Gambell ( Secretary to the West Lancashire Masonic Institution ) , moved , and Bro . Younghusband seconded , That the W . M . be appointed by the Lodge to confer with the Worshipful Masters of other Lodges in the town for . / the purpose of
forming a committee of investigation into the various applications for relief : " carried . After the transaction of other unimportant business , Bro . Pepper , P . M . No . 310 , said he wished to call the attention of that Lodge , as well as others in the town , to the acts of a cowan , who had been discovered by the Brethren of No . 310 . The person , whose name is Yos , a shipping agent , had taken an office in HancTsbuildings , Duke-street , over the room where Lodge No . 310 was held . He had represented himself to be a Mason around the docks , and was in possession of some
of the signs if not words of the Craft . He ( Bro . Pepper ) had considered it his duty to speak to him with the view of ascertaining whether the information imparted to him was correct , when , in justification of his contemptible conduct , he said he did it to obtain business . Bro . Pepper trusted the Brethren present would be on their guard , and caution other Brethren of the acts of this cowan . Before sitting down , he wished also to call their attention to another person , who held a Scotch certificate . He first solicited aid to go to America , and having been relieved , he afterwards expressed a wish to go to Dublin , or some other part of Ireland . It
was desirable , should he again make application for relief , that his case and intentions should be inquired into . The Brethren afterwards sat down to an excellent dinner ; and after the usual loyal , patriotic , and Craft toasts were drunk , a number of complimentary toasts were given and responded to . The evening ' s proceedings were agreeably enlivened by the singing of several songs and glees by the musical Brethren . Before closing the Lodge , it was unanimously resolved to join Lodge No . 245 , which is held in the same room , in the purchase or rental of an organ or harmonium .
